Sarah’s Gene-ius Discovery
Posted by Literary Titan

Sarah’s Gene-ius Discovery, by Sallana Brown, is an engaging children’s book that follows a young girl as she embarks on an exciting scientific journey. Sarah loves science, and when her class begins learning about DNA, she’s eager to dive in. After taking a DNA test, Sarah discovers her family’s roots and even connects with a second cousin who is a renowned geneticist. Through this journey, Sarah learns about her ancestry and how DNA connects her to people around the world. Along the way, she learns valuable lessons about science, family, and the wonders of discovery.
One of the things I enjoyed about this book is how well it blends science with storytelling. The explanations about DNA are simple yet informative, making the science feel accessible. For example, when Dr. London explains how DNA is made up of four letters (A, T, G, and C), it’s done in a fun way that helps children understand the basics of genetics without overwhelming them. The playful jokes, like “Why did the DNA go partying? To unwind!” add a lighthearted touch that keeps the tone fun and engaging. I also appreciated the book’s emphasis on family and discovery. Sarah’s excitement about learning where she comes from feels very genuine. The moment when Sarah and her mom learn about their ancestors from different parts of the world is a beautiful illustration of how science can help us connect with our roots. It’s a touching way to show children that science isn’t just about facts and figures, but about understanding who we are. The relationship Sarah develops with her newfound cousin, Dr. London, adds depth to this theme.
The illustrations are vibrant and filled with details that bring the story to life. Each page offers a visual treat for young readers, which enhances the overall experience. I found myself smiling at how Sarah’s curiosity was mirrored in the pictures, from her excitement in the classroom to her wide-eyed amazement when learning from Dr. London. It’s a book that not only tells a story but invites kids to explore alongside Sarah.
Sarah’s Gene-ius Discovery is a wonderful read for children who are curious about science, family, or both. The book manages to teach about DNA in a way that feels natural and fun, while also celebrating the joy of discovering our connections to the past. I’d highly recommend this book to young readers, especially those who enjoy science or learning about their family history. It’s educational, heartwarming, and a joy to read.
