The Elephant Trumpets in the Morning
Posted by Literary Titan

The Elephant Trumpets in the Morning by Shani T. Night is a cheerful children’s book about a little elephant whose enthusiastic morning ritual gradually transforms the lives of the animals around him. Every morning, before the sun has fully risen, he lets out a mighty trumpet that echoes through the jungle. At first, the other elephants find his early morning calls a little annoying, but he continues his routine with unmistakable joy. Soon, his trumpet becomes a familiar signal that gets the whole jungle moving. From sleepy lions and chattering parrots to swinging monkeys and smiling hippos, everyone begins to embrace the start of a new day. What begins as one little elephant’s personal habit eventually becomes a shared tradition that brings the entire herd together.
Night tells the story through playful rhymes that give the book a lively, musical rhythm. The elephant’s booming “PAHHHRRROOOO!” is especially fun and practically begs young readers to join in during storytime. There’s something endearing about a little elephant who simply loves greeting the morning and has no idea how much his enthusiasm will influence everyone else. As the animals develop their own morning routines, the story introduces children to the value of consistency, the confidence that comes from showing up each day, and the happiness that familiar rituals can bring. The idea of “Elephant O’Clock” is a particularly amusing touch, turning the elephant’s daily trumpet into something the whole jungle can look forward to.
Reggie Howard’s colorful illustrations give this picture book plenty of personality. The little elephant’s oversized blue eyes, rosy cheeks, expressive trunk, and exaggerated facial expressions make him an immediately engaging character. Close-up illustrations capture everything from his tremendous trumpeting to his delighted smiles, while the supporting animals bring their own humor to the pages. A lion yawns with its enormous mouth wide open, a brightly colored parrot chatters from its perch, and a monkey swings through the trees. The illustrations combine soft shading, bold outlines, and splashes of vivid color, often against spacious white backgrounds that keep the animals at the center of attention. The recurring images of the elephant and the playful visual details give children plenty to notice as the story unfolds.
I think what makes The Elephant Trumpets in the Morning appealing is how easily its message connects to children’s everyday experiences. Getting out of bed, getting dressed, heading to school, and finding the energy to begin another day are all familiar parts of childhood, and Night presents these ordinary moments as opportunities to build confidence and spread happiness. The book also includes age-specific explanations of its central lesson for children ages three to six and six to nine, along with a section of interesting elephant facts that extends the reading experience. Parents and educators can use the story to start conversations about morning routines, perseverance, and how one person’s positive habits can encourage others. With its energetic animal characters, rhythmic storytelling, and encouraging message, this is a warm, playful read-aloud that celebrates the small things children do every day and the joy of beginning again each morning.
