The Beginning of a Journey

Kirt Seuchan Author Interview

THE SAPPHIRE SEAL OF SOLOMON follows a grieving teenager who discovers his grandfather left behind clues and a warning sign linked to the legendary Seal of Solomon. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The inspiration came from the idea that grief can sometimes become the beginning of a journey. I wanted Kai’s discovery to feel personal before it became adventurous. He is not just finding an artifact; he is finding one final message from his grandfather. The hidden Bible compartment, the brass key, the glowing stone, and the warning all grew from that emotional question: what if someone you loved left behind a secret because they trusted you to finish what they could not?

I also wanted the story to feel deeply rooted in Trinidad and Tobago. Many adventure stories send young heroes to faraway temples or lost cities, but I wanted readers to feel that mystery, danger, and wonder could be hidden right here in our own landscape — in our hills, caves, swamps, forts, and islands.

Were there any real stories, legends, or historical mysteries that inspired the novel?

Yes, the novel was inspired by a mixture of biblical legend, Caribbean geography, and the real sense of mystery that exists in Trinidad and Tobago’s history. The Seal of Solomon has long been associated in legend with ancient wisdom, spiritual authority, and hidden power, and that gave the story a strong mythic foundation.

At the same time, the locations in the book are inspired by real places: Pitch Lake, Gasparee Caves, Caroni Swamp, Fort King George in Scarborough, and Little Tobago. Each location has its own atmosphere and history, and I wanted them to feel like natural parts of a treasure-hunt adventure rather than random stops on a map. Trinidad and Tobago has a rich mix of cultures, colonial history, folklore, natural wonders, and sacred spaces. That combination made it the perfect setting for a mystery involving something ancient and powerful.

Which part of Kai’s character did you find most rewarding to write?

The most rewarding part of Kai to write was his quiet courage. He is not a superhero, and he does not begin the story as someone who is ready for danger. He is grieving, uncertain, and still trying to understand the man his grandfather really was. What makes Kai special is not that he is fearless, but that he keeps going even when he is afraid.

I also enjoyed writing his growth from a boy who inherits a mystery into someone who begins to understand responsibility. The Seal is not just a prize to be found; it is something that tests character, motive, and sacrifice. Kai has to learn that some things are powerful because they are hidden, and some truths must be protected before they can be revealed.

Can you give us a glimpse inside Book 2 of The Concealer Chronicles? Where will it take readers?

Book 2 will expand the world beyond Trinidad and Tobago while still keeping Kai’s Caribbean identity at the heart of the story. At the end of Book 1, readers are given a clue pointing toward The Silver Horn and the south of Spain. That clue opens the door to a much larger history of the Concealers, the Obsidian Hand, and other hidden artifacts protected across different parts of the world.

Readers can expect a bigger adventure, new allies, more dangerous enemies, and deeper questions about what it means to guard something powerful. Kai is older, wiser, and more aware that the mystery his grandfather left behind was only one part of a much larger war being fought quietly across generations.

Fifteen-year-old Kai Ramkissoon is a strong young hero, pulled from ordinary life into a dangerous race against secret enemies who want to control an artifact never meant to be used. What makes the story stand out is its setting: Gasparee Caves, Pitch Lake, Tobago’s cliffs, and other real places become part of a larger mythic mystery.
