ABCs OF TRADES: The Electrician
Posted by Literary Titan

The Electrician turns the electrical trade into an A-to-Z learning journey, introducing young readers to terms such as ampere, breaker, circuit, fuse, joule, multimeter, voltage, and transformer. Each letter gets a short rhyming explanation, so the book moves quickly while still giving children a sense of what electricians work with and how electricity behaves. The opening makes its purpose clear: readers are going to “learn the ABCs of electricity” while exploring the world of a skilled trade. As a children’s book, it’s an appealing way to introduce vocabulary that many kids probably won’t encounter in a typical alphabet book.
What makes the concept especially interesting is the range of ideas it covers. The book starts with basic electrical terms, then gradually reaches into power generation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, solar power, wind turbines, and net zero energy. It also gives young readers a glimpse of the profession itself through entries such as “Inspector,” “Panel,” and “Expertise,” with the latter connecting learning and experience to eventually becoming a Master Electrician. The rhymes keep the material approachable, although a few lines feel shaped more by the need to rhyme than by natural conversation. Still, the short format works well for reading a few letters at a time and talking about unfamiliar terms together.
The illustrations do a lot of the teaching. A cheerful red-haired child and her purple goat companion appear throughout the picture book, giving the pages a consistent cast while the settings change from grassy landscapes to kitchens, electrical panels, power lines, and renewable-energy sites. Some of the strongest images turn abstract ideas into visual jokes or simple diagrams. A breaker becomes a stop sign, a fuse is paired with a “road closed” image, and resistance and voltage are shown inside a pipe as characters dealing with pressure and a narrow passage. These bright, cartoon-style scenes give children something concrete to look at while an adult explains concepts that could otherwise feel pretty technical.
This is a lively introduction to electricity and the electrician’s trade, with an unusual subject for an alphabet book and plenty of material for follow-up questions. I especially like that it connects everyday electrical ideas, such as outlets and light bulbs, with larger systems such as the grid, hydroelectric power, solar panels, and wind turbines. The closing rhyme brings the A-to-Z journey together and celebrates electricians as skilled people worth learning about. For families, classrooms, libraries, or trade professionals who want to show children what electrical work involves, this children’s book offers a friendly starting point with enough visual personality to make the technical vocabulary stick.
