A Fallen Hero: War of the Realms

A Fallen Hero: War of the Realms by Sara A. Noë is a story about a powerful half-human and half-ghost hybrid named Cato who the government immediately takes notice of. After being held as a test subject, Cato and eight humans who were under experimentation for their own supernatural abilities make their getaway. In a suspenseful chase, Cato struggles to protect his new allies at all costs as he overcomes many obstacles on his relentless pursuit of freedom and safety.

A Fallen Hero is a suspenseful science fiction novel with a hearty mix of supernatural fantasy elements that elevate the story.

One of my favorite aspects of this book is the changing perspectives and the deep character development. It doesn’t just stick to Cato’s perspective. There is an interweaving mix of character stories threading their way throughout the main plot. We’re even treated to the perspective of the villain, which helps establish their intentions and sets them up as people rather than cookie cutter villains.

The characters support an already well developed backdrop and setting that is vividly and thoroughly detailed. One line that spoke to me was on page 120, “Agent Kovak shifted on the uncomfortable wooden chair and eyed the family sitting across from him. The father looked older than he probably was, his face tan and weather-beaten in his salt pepper hair thinning. The mother was slender and plain…” With just a few simple lines we get the setting, character description and a tense atmosphere. This is something many authors strive for but few achieve.

This was an intense read for me, after a few pages I could feel the tension in my shoulders starting to build. That didn’t stop me from enjoying every moment of this book. I think A Fallen Hero is a metaphor for good vs bad, yin and yang, it’s a simple premise that works well here. A Fallen Hero is an explosive beginning to the War of the Realms series.
