Daniel’s Dreams: Monster Mountain

Daniel’s Dreams: Monster Mountain is a fun children’s story written by Leann Brown, detailing the story of a young boy named Daniel who is feeling nervous and learns how to deal with his emotions when he is feeling uneasy.

I absolutely enjoyed this magical story, especially with the inclusion of the cute monsters and the creative Monster Mountain. Daniel is an avid dreamer, it is one of his favorite things to do, and the night before an important assembly a yellow monster named Dex comes to him in his dreams and takes him to Monster Mountain. It is while at Monster Mountain that Daniel begins to learn really important lessons, which I enjoyed because I felt that any child would be able to understand the methods Daniel uses and apply it in their own life.

Leann Brown does a wonderful job in presenting the idea of “don’t judge a book by its cover.” When Daniel first meets Dex, Dex tells him that although he is a monster, it doesn’t mean that he is mean–they just look different from humans. Daniel learns the lesson of not judging people solely on appearance. This is always an important lesson to teach young readers, and apt to include in a magical journey filled with monsters in fantastical land. While Daniel begins to explore Monster Mountain he encounters various creative and colorful characters. I enjoyed the fantastic illustrations by Yogesh Mahajan. They were something I always looked forward to when flipping the pages. Each piece of art was bright and the texture was something that was unique for me.

Daniel’s Dreams: Monster Mountain explores the idea that your friends and loved ones always want you to succeed and will therefore never desert you when you are struggling. This was such an important scene to include because it is a beautiful reminder to children but also to anyone who reads this story. Daniel is such a compassionate and understanding character, qualities that I think are important in a children’s story! This is a fantastic book for parents to include in their children’s reading list as it’s easy to read and will surely keep their attention.
