The Weight of Silence and Shame
Posted by Literary Titan

By His Grace: My Story of Survival, Escape, and Triumph is a raw and unfiltered account of your survival from years of physical and emotional abuse and how, when you became a mother, you discovered your strength rooted in faith. Why was it important for you to share your story?
It was important for me to share my story because for so many years, I carried the weight of silence and shame. I know firsthand how isolating it can feel to believe you’re the only one, to think no one could possibly understand the pain you’ve endured. But God didn’t create us to suffer in silence. When I became a mother, I realized I had a responsibility — not just to my children, but to myself — to break that silence, to confront the lies I had believed about my worth, and to step fully into the truth of who God says I am.
I wanted others, especially survivors, to know that healing is possible, that they are not alone, and that God’s grace is big enough to cover even the most broken parts of our stories. By sharing my journey — the good, the bad, and the miraculous — I hope to show that God can take even our deepest wounds and turn them into a testimony of His faithfulness, strength, and redemption. My story is not just about survival; it’s about the power of faith to rewrite your future.
What was the most challenging part of writing your memoir, and what was the most rewarding?
The most challenging part of writing By His Grace was revisiting the darkest moments of my life — the abuse, the fear, the shame, and the years of feeling trapped and powerless. Reliving those memories was incredibly painful, but even more difficult was being brutally honest with myself about how those experiences shaped the choices I made later in life. There were moments when I wanted to stop writing because the weight of it all felt too heavy.
But the most rewarding part was seeing how God’s hand was there through every single chapter — even when I couldn’t see it at the time. Writing this memoir allowed me to connect the dots and recognize the moments of divine intervention, the people He placed in my path, and the strength He gave me to keep going. The greatest reward, though, has been hearing from readers who say my story gave them hope, courage, and the belief that they too can find healing and freedom. That’s why I wrote it — to remind others that no matter how broken your story feels, God is still in the business of redemption.
How did you balance the need to be honest and authentic with the need to protect your privacy and that of others in your memoir?
Balancing honesty and authenticity with protecting privacy — both mine and others’ — was one of the hardest lines to walk. From the very beginning, I knew my story had to be told with truth and transparency because sugarcoating the reality of abuse would only diminish the message God placed on my heart. At the same time, I wanted to be mindful and respectful, especially when it came to people who were part of my story but are no longer in my life.
My approach was to focus on my experience — how I felt, how I processed what happened, and how God met me in those moments — rather than getting caught up in blaming or exposing others. I changed certain names and details when necessary, not to hide the truth, but to keep the focus where it belonged: on the healing, the redemption, and the hope that comes through faith. Ultimately, my goal was to protect my heart, honor my journey, and create a safe space for others to see themselves in my story — knowing they can find freedom too.
What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your story?
If there’s one thing I hope readers take away from my story, it’s this: No matter how dark your past is, no matter how broken you feel, there is always hope — and that hope is found in God’s grace. Your past does not define your future, and healing is possible when you allow God into those wounded places.
I want every reader, especially those who have experienced abuse or trauma, to know that they are not alone, they are not beyond redemption, and their voice matters. God can take the most shattered story and turn it into something beautiful — not in spite of the pain, but through it. If my story helps even one person believe that healing, freedom, and a life of purpose are within reach, then every word was worth it.
