Conventional Wisdom Wasn’t Working
Posted by Literary Titan

You Don’t Know Sh*t About Leadership takes a raw, research-backed look at why leadership is broken and offers a fresh, brutally honest framework for getting it right. Why was this an important book for you to write?
DAMON WELLS: My goal with this book is simple: to equip people with the tools to become better leaders—faster and more effectively. After years of refining my own leadership approach through experience and research, I wanted to share a practical framework that helps others lead with confidence and impact while reducing the learning curve.
Too many leadership books rely on outdated ideas, oversimplified models, or feel-good platitudes that don’t hold up in the real world. I wrote You Don’t Know Sh*t About Leadership because I saw a massive gap between the science of leadership and the way leadership is actually taught and practiced. Organizations are investing billions into leadership development, yet failure rates remain alarmingly high. That told me the conventional wisdom wasn’t working.
I wanted to cut through the noise and give leaders something raw, real, and research-backed—a framework that actually reflects how human behavior, decision-making, and group dynamics work in complex environments. Leadership isn’t about charisma, titles, or outdated corporate jargon; it’s about understanding human psychology, building trust, navigating uncertainty, and making tough, high-stakes decisions with clarity.
This book was also personal for me. I’ve seen firsthand what happens when bad leadership destroys teams, kills innovation, and creates toxic cultures—and I’ve also experienced what it’s like to work under truly great leaders who elevate everyone around them. The difference is life-changing. My goal was to arm leaders with the tools they need to be on the right side of that equation—to be decisive, adaptable, and deeply effective in a way that isn’t dependent on outdated corporate structures or leadership clichés.
Leadership is evolving, and I wanted to write a book that embraces that evolution—one that doesn’t just tell people what to do, but explains why leadership fails and how to actually fix it. This book is about replacing myths with science, replacing guesswork with strategy, and giving leaders the clarity they need to succeed in the real world.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
DAMON WELLS: Some of the most important ideas shared revolve around redefining leadership through scientific, psychological, and strategic lenses. Here are some examples:
The Integration of Science and Leadership–The book challenges traditional leadership models by incorporating insights from neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, complexity theory, and game theory to explain why leadership is more complex than conventional wisdom suggests.
Game Theory and Leadership Strategy–It emphasizes how leaders navigate strategic decision-making using game theory principles, recognizing that leadership is not about dominance but about fostering cooperation and designing environments where collaboration is the rational choice.
The Ballistic Leadership Framework (BLF)–A new model introduced in the book, BLF moves away from traditional step-by-step leadership formulas and instead focuses on leveraging scientific principles to build leadership strategies that align with human behavior.
The Role of Personality and Self-Awareness–The book stresses that effective leadership comes from understanding one’s innate strengths and weaknesses rather than trying to fit into a pre-defined leadership mold. It argues that self-awareness and the ability to work with, rather than against, one’s traits are crucial for success.
The Complexity of Leadership in Modern Organizations–The book critiques the idea of leadership as a simple, top-down process. Instead, it likens organizations to complex adaptive systems, where control is an illusion, and leadership is more about fostering adaptability, emergent solutions, and strong networks.
Breaking the Leadership Development Fallacy–It challenges the $366 billion leadership development industry, arguing that most leadership training programs fail because they ignore biological and cognitive constraints that shape human decision-making.
Emotional and Cognitive Limitations of Leaders–The book discusses how leadership failures often stem from cognitive biases, emotional triggers, and deeply ingrained survival instincts that influence decision-making in ways leaders often fail to recognize.
The Importance of Psychological Safety and Collaboration–Drawing from studies on human behavior, it highlights how leaders who foster psychological safety, allow for strategic play, and recognize the importance of team cohesion are far more successful than those who lead through fear or rigid control.
Overall, the book presents a data-driven, research-backed argument that leadership is not about charisma or authority but about understanding human behavior, strategic thinking, and working with complexity rather than against it.
How did you develop and start implementing your Ballistic Leadership Framework (BLF)?
DAMON WELLS: The Ballistic Leadership Framework (BLF) was developed as a response to the limitations of traditional leadership models, which often fail in real-world applications due to their rigid, linear approaches. The BLF was designed to integrate science-backed principles from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, complexity theory, and game theory to provide a more adaptable, dynamic approach to leadership.
The BLF was built upon four core domains that reflect key leadership dynamics. The foundation, People & Trust, emphasizes understanding individual differences and fostering trust using insights from psychology and neuroscience. The first pillar, Partnerships & Cohesion, focuses on building strong team relationships and collaboration using principles from social dynamics and complexity science. The second pillar, Practice & Confidence, encourages continuous learning, adaptability, and iterative improvement in leadership behavior. Finally, the pinnacle, Purpose & Discipline, aligns teams around a clear mission and ensures consistency in leadership decisions.
The BLF was implemented through a structured approach at individual, team, and organizational levels. At the individual level, leaders were encouraged to assess skills, create personalized development plans, and engage in iterative learning. At the team level, cross-training, mentoring, and challenge exercises (similar to military training methods) were introduced to enhance team adaptability and cohesion. At the organizational level, systems were put in place to reinforce leadership behaviors through training programs, performance metrics, and recognition strategies.
The BLF was designed to address three major leadership challenges. The first challenge is the failure of traditional leadership development, as many leadership programs operate on outdated assumptions and ignore the constraints of human cognition and behavior. The second challenge is the need for adaptability, since modern organizations function in complex, ever-changing environments where traditional leadership strategies often fail. The third challenge is the necessity of a data-driven approach to leadership, ensuring that leadership decisions are flexible, evidence-based, and rooted in scientific insights.
The BLF is not a one-size-fits-all model, but rather a customizable leadership approach that empowers leaders to adapt their strategies based on team dynamics, external pressures, and evolving challenges. It was developed to ensure long-term leadership success by integrating trust, collaboration, iterative learning, and purpose-driven action into leadership practice.
What is the next book that you are working on and when can your fans expect it to be out?
DAMON WELLS: I am currently working on a Ballistic Leadership Framework Handbookin a four-part series called Become a Ballistic Boss, designed to be a practical, step-by-step guide for leaders who want to apply the principles of the BLF in their daily leadership roles. While You Don’t Know Sh*t About Leadership laid the theoretical foundation and explored why leadership failures are so common, the new books will focus on actionable strategies, tools, and exercises that leaders can implement immediately.
The handbook will include real-world case studies, self-assessment tools, and customizable frameworks to help leaders understand their strengths, identify areas for improvement, and develop a leadership style that aligns with their organizational context. Each book will break down one of the four core domains of the BLF—People & Trust, Partnerships & Cohesion, Practice & Confidence, and Purpose & Discipline—providing clear methodologies for putting these concepts into practice.
Additionally, this book will address common leadership dilemmas and decision-making frameworks based on cognitive science, game theory, and behavioral psychology. Leaders will learn how to navigate complex situations, manage team dynamics, and create high-performance cultures with practical, research-backed solutions.
Fans can expect the Become a Ballistic Boss to be released in early 2026. My goal is to make it an indispensable resource for executives, managers, and aspiring leaders who want to master the art of leadership in a way that’s deeply rooted in science, strategy, and human behavior.

Leadership books are a dime a dozen. Most are filled with corporate clichés, outdated theories, and feel-good fluff that crumbles in the real world. They promise transformation but deliver nothing but recycled buzzwords.
This is not that book.
G. Damon Wells, a career Army officer with 30 years of military service, has led at every level-from small teams under fire to strategic operations on the global stage. You Don’t Know Sh*t About Leadership rips apart the myths that have held leaders back for decades and rebuilds leadership from the ground up. Combining science, psychology, and battlefield-tested wisdom, this book exposes why most leadership advice is dead wrong-and what actually works.
Why This Book Stands Apart
It’s brutally honest. If you want sugar-coated platitudes, look elsewhere. Wells calls out the real reasons leaders fail-ego, incompetence, and blind faith in outdated models.
It’s rooted in science. Backed by cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, and complexity theory, this book explains the hidden forces that drive leadership success-or failure.
It’s practical. No vague theories. No academic jargon. Just real-world strategies leaders can implement immediately to fix broken teams, navigate chaos, and lead under pressure.
It’s a wake-up call. If you’re in a leadership position (or want to be), this book will force you to rethink everything you thought you knew about influence, decision-making, and power.
What You’ll Learn:
Why 82% of leaders are picked for the wrong reasons-and how to avoid becoming one of them.
The science of leadership failure-and how to rewire your brain for better decision-making.
How to build a high-performance team in any environment-even when morale is low and stress is high.
The truth about “charisma” (Hint: It’s overrated, and it often hides incompetence).
How to survive and thrive in organizations designed to produce bad leaders.
The Ballistic Leadership Framework-a battle-tested, scientifically grounded approach to leadership that actually works.
Who Should Read This Book?
CEOs, executives, and managers tired of leadership fluff and ready for real solutions.
Military leaders and veterans who want to translate battlefield leadership into the corporate world.
Entrepreneurs and business owners who need to build strong teams and scale their vision.
Anyone who’s sick of watching bad leaders wreck good organizations.
Final Verdict: This Is the Leadership Book of the Year
Most leadership books are written by people who have never actually led. Wells has spent three decades leading under the highest stakes imaginable. You Don’t Know Sh*t About Leadership doesn’t just challenge conventional wisdom-it obliterates it.
This isn’t a book. It’s an upgrade for your leadership mindset.
Are you ready to level up?
Read it. Apply it. Lead better.
