East West Love
Posted by Literary Titan

East West Love by I.M. Stoicus is a sweeping historical romance that begins in post-Civil War Wisconsin and follows Union veteran Brennan Fitzpatrick’s relationship with Ailin Lóng, the daughter of a Chinese immigrant family. Their love story develops through family gatherings, formal courtship rituals, and a shared commitment to faith. From their first meeting in 1865 through four decades of marriage, the novel grows into a warm family saga about building a home and a legacy together.
I think the book’s most distinctive feature is its blend of Chinese, Irish, German, and American traditions. Stoicus gives Chinese betrothal customs, Irish blessings, Catholic ceremonies, multilingual expressions, food, clothing, and music prominent places in the story. That cultural detail makes this multicultural romance feel like a celebration of families learning to understand one another. Brennan’s effort to learn Mandarin and honor the Lóng family’s customs also gives the interracial romance a thoughtful foundation based on respect and participation.
Alongside the romance, the novel offers generous portions of Civil War historical fiction, Western adventure, and domestic history. Horse races, military ceremonies, martial arts encounters, weddings, picnics, and holiday celebrations keep the characters active, while Brennan’s memories of combat lend emotional weight to his devotion to peace and family. The prose is direct and highly descriptive, with translations and historical explanations woven throughout. Its unhurried, chronological approach makes the story read like an affectionate family chronicle passed from one generation to the next.
East West Love is a Christian historical romance about loyalty, gratitude, and lasting partnership. Brennan and Ailin’s relationship is expressed through everyday acts of care, from serving meals and raising children to supporting relatives and honoring those who’ve died. Readers who enjoy uplifting historical romance novels, faith-centered love stories, richly detailed courtships, and multigenerational family sagas will find plenty to appreciate here. The title’s idea that “East to west, home is best” neatly captures the book’s belief that love creates a home large enough to hold multiple cultures, generations, and traditions.
