Lucky Puppy Finds Two Families
Posted by Literary Titan

Lucky Puppy Finds Two Families is a heartwarming tale that chronicles the adventures of a stray dog named Lucky, who navigates the bustling streets of Conakry, Guinea, before finding his way into the loving arms of two different families. Vida Gecas, inspired by her real-life experiences as a U.S. Diplomat, crafts a narrative that captures the essence of resilience, companionship, and the profound impact of love. The story follows Lucky as he transitions from a life of uncertainty to one filled with security and affection, first from a compassionate local family and later from an American family working at the U.S. Embassy.
Vida Gecas’ writing shines with vivid descriptions and an engaging storytelling style that brings Lucky’s world to life. The bustling seaport of Conakry and the vibrant market scenes are painted with such detail that you can almost hear the multilingual chatter and smell the fresh produce. The scene where Lucky meets two girls who eventually take him in is particularly touching, encapsulating the fear and hope that stray animals might feel in such situations. Gecas’ ability to imbue Lucky’s perspective with emotion and personality makes it easy to root for this endearing canine protagonist. The ideas within the book, such as the importance of kindness and the value of diverse experiences, are conveyed effectively through Lucky’s interactions and observations. For instance, Lucky’s friendship with Mariama, a fruit vendor, and Rex, a dog with a family, highlights the different forms of companionship and support systems that can emerge even in the most unexpected places. Gecas’ book also subtly introduces young readers to the roles and responsibilities of embassy staff, blending educational content with a compelling narrative.
Illustrator Lisa Alderson complements Gecas’ storytelling with charming and colorful illustrations that enhance the reader’s connection to the characters and setting. The depiction of the market, the busy streets, and the embassy grounds is both accurate and imaginative, providing a visual treat that aligns perfectly with the book’s tone. Alderson’s portrayal of Lucky’s expressions and body language adds depth to his character, making his journey all the more relatable and heartwarming.
Lucky Puppy Finds Two Families, by Vida Gecas, is an ideal read for children and families who appreciate stories about animals, cultural diversity, and the importance of compassion. The book is especially fitting for young readers interested in learning about different cultures and the life of diplomatic families overseas. Gecas’ personal touch and Alderson’s delightful illustrations make this a memorable addition to any child’s bookshelf. Whether you’re looking for a bedtime story or an educational tale, Lucky’s adventures are sure to entertain and inspire.

Embracing Differences
Posted by Literary-Titan

In Valentino’s Purpose, young readers learn to celebrate diversity and uniqueness alongside a lively Goldendoodle preparing to become a service dog. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
Valentino, my own PTSD service dog, he was the heart and soul of this story. He was truly extraordinary. He wore clothes and shoes and had a personality that was almost human. He had a heart of gold and touched so many lives. The idea of using him to teach children about embracing differences came naturally.
Valentino was different. He wore clothes, which made him stand out. He was a service dog, a role that not all dogs play. This made him a perfect example for young readers to understand that being different isn’t just okay, it’s something to celebrate.
What character did you enjoy writing for most?
Valentino because he was more than just a service dog. He was my best friend, my confidant, and a constant source of love and support. He taught me so much about resilience, compassion, and the importance of embracing differences. I’m so grateful for the time I had with him, and I hope his story will inspire others to be kind and accepting.
The illustrations in your book are fantastic. Can you share with us a little about your collaboration with illustrator Lilly Walther?
The vibrant colors and charming characters in Valentino’s Purpose are a testament to the incredible collaboration between myself and illustrator Lilly Walther. It all began when Lilly, one of Valentino’s 3,500 Instagram followers, reached out after I shared my dream of writing a book. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear she wanted to be a part of this creative journey. From the very start, we knew we had a special connection. I envisioned a world filled with bright, happy colors, and Lilly’s talent perfectly captured that vision. We spent countless hours discussing the characters, the settings, and the overall atmosphere we wanted to create. My artistic knowledge, combined with Lilly’s incredible skill, resulted in illustrations that not only brought the story to life but also added a layer of depth and emotion.
Can young readers look forward to seeing more from Valentino in the future? What are you currently working on?
With five new Valentino books poised for publication, the future of my beloved Valentino is bright. Readers can anticipate a world of new adventures, unexpected twists, and the enduring power of storytelling that has captivated audiences from the very beginning.
My goal is to create stories that not only entertain but also inspire.
I want young readers to feel empowered to face their own challenges and to believe that anything is possible.

Pippin’s River Rescue (A Poodle Called Pippin)
Posted by Literary Titan

“Pippin’s River Rescue” tells the delightful story of Pippin, a curious and brave poodle who loves visiting the river with his friends. One day, the serene environment turns into a scene of urgency when Rocket, a young dolphin, becomes entangled in a fishing net. With the help of his animal friends, Pippin embarks on a courageous rescue mission, emphasizing the importance of protecting nature from human-made hazards.
The writing is engaging and perfectly tailored for young readers. Author Julia Seaborn has a knack for creating a charming narrative that combines adventure with an educational message. The dialogue between Pippin and his friends feels natural and lively, particularly during the rescue scene where tension builds up as Pippin and Bubbles struggle to free Rocket from the net. The use of simple yet vivid language makes the story accessible and enjoyable for children, ensuring they stay captivated throughout.
One of the aspects of the book I enjoyed the most was its environmental message. Seaborn cleverly weaves a lesson about the impact of littering on wildlife into the storyline without it feeling forced. This is effectively illustrated when Shadow and Shimmer, black swans, explain how discarded fishing nets and other trash can be harmful to animals. The book doesn’t just stop at pointing out the problem but also encourages children to take action, as seen when Pippin promises to help clean up the riverbank. This call to action is empowering for young readers and instills a sense of responsibility towards the environment.
Richard Hoit’s illustrations are a visual treat, enriching the story with vibrant colors and expressive characters. The playful portrayal of Pippin, Rocket, and their friends adds depth to the narrative, making the characters more memorable and endearing. The illustrations also effectively convey the urgency and teamwork involved in the rescue, which captures children’s attention and helps them grasp the story’s emotional and moral nuances.
“Pippin’s River Rescue” is a delightful and meaningful picture book for young children. The combination of an engaging storyline, a vital environmental message, and captivating illustrations makes this children’s book a valuable addition to any child’s library. I highly recommend it for parents and educators looking to teach children about the importance of environmental conservation in a fun and engaging way.

The Day the Clouds Went Away
Posted by Literary Titan

“The Day the Clouds Went Away” by Richard Rieman is a charming and beautifully illustrated children’s book that tells the story of Princess Claudia, a bold and independent young princess with low vision. Claudia, with the help of her guide owl Iris and the somewhat clumsy wizard Fumbledore, learns an important lesson about the value of clouds and rain after she commands the clouds to disappear, only to face unintended consequences.
Rieman’s storytelling is engaging and whimsical, capturing the reader’s imagination from the first page. The characters are well-developed, each with distinct and endearing personalities. Princess Claudia is a refreshing protagonist who is strong-willed yet open to learning. The interactions with various clouds, such as Cyrus McCirrus and Chrissy the Cumulus Cat Cloud, are not only educational but also filled with playful dialogue that keeps young readers entertained while subtly imparting knowledge about different types of clouds and their roles in nature.
One of the book’s strengths is its clever integration of scientific facts into the narrative. For instance, through Claudia’s conversations with the clouds, children learn that clouds are essential for rain, which in turn is crucial for the survival of plants and animals. This educational aspect is seamlessly woven into the story, making the learning experience enjoyable. Additionally, the book’s illustrations by Barbara Owczarek are vibrant and captivating, perfectly complementing the text and bringing the fantastical elements of the story to life.
The narrative also thoughtfully addresses themes of acceptance and understanding. Claudia’s initial frustration with the clouds, driven by her desire for a perfect sunny day, transforms into a realization of their importance. This journey reflects broader lessons about appreciating the natural world and understanding that everything has a role to play.
“The Day the Clouds Went Away” is an enchanting read for children and adults alike. It combines a delightful story with educational elements and beautiful illustrations, making it a perfect addition to any child’s bookshelf. I highly recommend this picture book for children aged 4 to 8, especially those who enjoy stories about nature, fantasy, and learning through adventure.

Old Bess
Posted by Literary Titan

Old Bess by Cynthia Vander Ark offers a vivid and pastoral narrative that delves into themes of resilience in both human and animal spirits. This lovely children’s book takes readers to a charming rural backdrop, focusing on a farm’s crisis when Old Bess, a cherished cow, disappears just before calving. The tension builds as dusk blankets Hog’s Back Mountain, and Old Bess is nowhere among the returning herd, causing worry among the farm dwellers.
The plot centers around the narrator and Keith, who set out on a gripping search marked by suspenseful moments and a palpable sense of urgency. Their quest through the dimming woods and rugged terrain mirrors their fluctuating despair and hope. They eventually find Old Bess in a dire state, leading to a communal effort to assist her through a stormy night. Following the ordeal, the story transitions to a more serene scene, where the narrator tenderly cares for the newborn calf, underlining the importance of nurture and responsibility.
Old Bess stands out not just as an adventure and survival tale but also as a poignant exploration of life’s cycles and the critical role of community support in overcoming adversities. The addition of a glossary helps demystify farming terminology and enriches the book’s educational value. With its engaging narrative and lessons on perseverance and compassion, this picture book is poised to enchant young readers and teach them about the enduring beauty of life’s cycles.

A Positive Experience
Posted by Literary-Titan

Mimi Gets a Tooth Filling follows a little girl who, after biting into a candy apple, feels a sharp pain in her tooth and has to visit the dentist for the first time. The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Sameer Kassar?
Working with my illustrator was amazing. He was able to envision the exact details of the images I had in mind. He made corrections when needed, was an excellent communicator throughout the process, and exceeded my expectations.
What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?
In terms of the educational aspect of the book, I wanted to reduce any anxiety for a child who would be getting their first dental filling, by providing a step-by-step guide on what to expect during the procedure. I also wanted young readers to see how Mimi responded to the treatment in a positive way and had a positive experience.
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?
Mimi Gets a Tooth Filling, is my third children’s dental book. I have three books written in total and I’m currently working on a fourth. They are all the same genre; children’s picture dental books.

A Champion for Nature
Posted by Literary-Titan

Raccoons Go Rafting follows a group of mischievous and adventurous raccoons as they go on a rafting trip over the summer. What was the inspiration for your story?
This summer “tail” is based on my adventures as a NYS Whitewater Raft Guide on the Hudson River. The raccoons featured in Raccoons Go Rafting (RGR) are based on guide friends I formed amazing friendships with. Nugget was the nickname I was given on the water by Bandit, the rascally red-vested raccoon. In real life, Bandit was the one who taught me how to raft!
The art in this book is vibrant and entertaining, making readers wish they were right there on the river with the raccoons. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Anthony Richichi?
I have been very fortunate that the indie publisher, Saratoga Springs Publishing (SSP), has such talented illustrators available to her authors! While in the storyboarding process with SSP, we realized that RGR needed an illustrator with a passion for nature and animals as well as a sense of adventure. Anthony possesses all of those traits! During our collaborations, it was amazing to see my stick figure raccoons turn into the adorable furry adventurers featured on the pages of RGR.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
In my debut book, I wanted the Hudson River’s beauty and strength to shine. As a guide, I fell in love with the River and the animals that call it home, therefore I wanted to create an engaging and educational picture book that could grow with young readers. On the first read, this “tail” is very vibrant with short bursts of text but on your second, third, and later reads the different rapids and animals within the pages start to pop. The call of conservation as seen on the map’s signs “Take only memories” and “Leave only pawprints” is another aspect that I like to expand on during my author readings. It is very important that our youth begin to not only experience and fall in love with our vibrant Earth; our youth must also become active in conservation so that they can continue to be a champion for nature as they grow up.
What future adventures do readers have to look forward to with these mischievous raccoons, and when can they expect the next story?
This gang of raccoon friends isn’t done exploring yet! The Raccoons Go Rafting series will be expanding this summer with a trip down the Sacandaga River! This new adventure, Raccoons Ride the Dragonback, will be splashing onto shelves later this summer. Nugget and her friends still have many other river adventures ahead of them with the Moose River, Niagara Falls, and even rivers outside of Nugget’s home state, New York, on their TBR (standing for To Be Rafted) list! Follow our adventures on Facebook for the inside scoop!
