The More the Merrier: A Multi-Sensory Musical Journey Offering an Interactive and Fun Way for Kids to Learn About Diversity and Inclusion
Posted by Literary Titan

Meridith Taylor Strout’s The More the Merrier is a delightful children’s book that celebrates inclusion and the power of music. The story follows Ella, a vibrant little girl who receives a set of musical instruments for her birthday. Struggling to play them all at once, she has an idea—invite friends to join in! What begins as a solo dream turns into a joyous band, where each child brings their unique personality and instrument to create a harmonious celebration of togetherness.
I loved how Strout’s writing combines simplicity with warmth. Ella’s excitement over her birthday gift felt so genuine. The moment she opens the brightly wrapped present and names each instrument felt almost nostalgic, like a memory of childhood wonder. The book beautifully conveys how such small, shared joys can spark big connections. The illustrations by Remesh Ram are bright and engaging. They bring the characters and the setting to life. One of my favorite visuals was Ella and her friends parading through the park, instruments in hand, while people clapped and cheered. It was such a colorful, lively moment. It’s not just the images but the way they align with the story that adds to its charm. Together, the text and pictures create a vivid experience for young readers. When she spots Zoe on the swings or Jacob playing basketball, her approach is simple and kind. The book doesn’t preach; it shows. This approach makes it accessible for kids and a helpful tool for parents or teachers discussing friendship and inclusion.
The More the Merrier is a joy to read and share. It’s perfect for kids aged 4-8, but I’d recommend it to anyone who loves stories about kindness and community. This book would shine in classrooms, libraries, or family storytime. It’s a little book with a big heart, and I can’t imagine a better way to remind us that we truly rise by lifting others.
