Gods and God Particles follows a physicist who discovers that gods belong to an ancient collective consciousness and must decide whether to use its power to save humanity without becoming a godlike ruler himself. How did you approach balancing complex scientific and philosophical ideas with character development and emotional intimacy?

My goal was not just to balance them, but to make them organically intertwined. In my journey through science, I could never separate scientific concepts from the scientists who originated them. Similarly, once the scientific and philosophical concepts were established, they themselves generated the characters. Let me give a few examples.

My experience leading major science projects prepared me for this challenge, since it required me to define scientific tasks, recruit people according to their qualifications and experience, and organize them into effective teams. Once I had identified the scientific concepts and the idea of universal harmony that would underpin the story, it became clear that the central protagonist’s mission would be to restore the primacy of harmony in a broken world. Since I see the world in pragmatic physicalist terms, the central character had to be a physicist, and science and philosophy readily supplied both his character and his emotional make-up.

A broken world is already embryonic in our present time, with authoritarian tendencies, addiction to entertainment, and increasing social fragmentation. Equally, I could also see the corresponding resistance to these tendencies. Socio-political history and philosophy provided the prototypes for these characters and the models for their interactions. confess that some characters are, indeed,
caricatures of leaders of our own times.

The contrast between the noble spirit of scientific inquiry and discovery and the unrestrained application of technology without ethical responsibility has concerned me for a long time, and I have written a paper on that subject. I had to weave this theme into the story because, left unchecked, it foreshadows the dehumanizing condition of our future. At the same time, the fact that technology is a double-edged sword also means that it can be used to counter social ills. Thus was born a visionary technologist—himself double-edged: kind, thoughtful, and compassionate on one side, yet determined, at any cost, to set the world right on the other.

One particularly interesting character is the girl prodigy, who was drawn partly from my own life—highly talented, impatient to change the world, yet unequipped to choose the right path to do so. I chose not to make her a scientist because I believe that science, properly learned, would have guided her toward greater clarity and understanding.

Philosophies describe how people think and act, and how they justify themselves. In this novel, I turned that around and used philosophy to justify the characters’ actions and the narrative itself. I hope readers will see that the novel ultimately becomes a narrative about the enduring wisdom found in philosophy and the world’s religious traditions.

Arun’s attempt to save humanity risks turning him into a new kind of ruler. How did you think about the boundary between benevolent guidance and authoritarian control?

Authoritarian regimes arise from the nexus of power and wealth. They destroy societies rather than stabilize and nurture them. Since authoritarianism is the antithesis of democracy, it cannot be consistent with either scientific or philosophical methods. As John Dewey observed, “Democracy is more than a form of government; it is primarily a mode of associated living, of conjoint communicated experience.” Since readers will see that I regard the scientific temperament as both the noblest and the most pragmatic way of engaging with the world, Arun—a scientist before anything else—could never become a ruler.

One of the novel’s more subtle themes is that people are constantly seeking to crown leaders, place heroes on pedestals, and worship them as gods. As the novel suggests, science and modern philosophy both warn against this human tendency, and several characters argue that Arun himself would never accept such worship. Yet, in an earlier chapter, one of the teachers tells Arun not to make that choice for others. While modern religions part ways on this question, the novel suggests that the original founders of the great religious traditions never intended to be objects of worship. In some ways, this is one of the purposes of the novel’s physicalist interpretation of the prophets.

What inspired you to present science and spirituality as different languages for describing the same underlying reality?

I joined the scientific community at a very young and immature age. Having come from a religious family, I practiced both science and religion, largely unaware of the conflict between them or of the inauthenticity of leading two separate contradictory lives. As I grew older, I recognized that conflict and deliberately set aside spiritual aspirations, retaining only a form of spirituality rooted in social cohesion and an admiration for nature. That outlook remained with me throughout much of my research career in applied science.

The situation changed when I joined the Supercollider laboratory in Texas and had to learn particle physics. As I described in my earlier technical-popular science book, the physics of the tiniest particles influences how the cosmos came into being, while the cosmos, in turn, determines the history of those very particles—the Ouroboros snake. That realization led me to pay much closer attention to cosmology.

Gradually, it became clear to me what religions have fundamentally been about: the longing to break free from the prison of the ego and to live as participants in the universe rather than as isolated individuals. This is expressed in the novel through the narrative of the Link Force:

“It manifests as the myths of your indigenous cultures, as the messages of prophets and the scriptures of your religions, as the metaphors of your secular philosophies. It also expresses itself in the emotion and fire behind music, the harmony behind justice, the quiet ache in art and poetry that speaks of home. It is the soul—Aatma—pining to reunite with God—Paramaatma. This is also why scientists are driven to use the instruments of science to transform experience into wisdom and metaphysics, to seek the unifying Theory of Everything.”

Scientists, who pursue discovery not for results but out of wonder, understand that science and spirituality can exist side by side. They are like physics and mathematics, or particles and waves—different languages describing the same underlying reality. One language speaks to our feelings of awe and the other to the sense of humility and emotional belonging when we witness the elegance of the universe.

Gods and God Particles – The Silence Equation

Raghavan Jayakumar’s Gods and God Particles is a sprawling science-fiction novel that combines particle physics, spiritual mythology, political resistance, emerging technology, and posthuman philosophy. Its central figure, Arun Jayanth, is a Nobel Prize-winning physicist working at a powerful collider in Tallinn when he encounters a being who appears as Krishna. Arun gradually learns that the gods and prophets of human history were manifestations of the Collective, an ancient consciousness formed from quarks, gluons, and a mysterious relational field called the Link. When Arun is invited to join this Collective, his scientific discovery becomes inseparable from a larger mission: helping humanity survive a future dominated by authoritarian governments, climate collapse, propaganda, and technologies capable of altering thought itself.

The book’s most distinctive achievement is the way it treats science and spirituality as two vocabularies for describing the same underlying reality. Krishna, Jesus, and other sacred figures aren’t presented merely as supernatural visitors. They become guides who translate higher-dimensional physics into stories, symbols, music, and religious experience. The book’s governing idea is captured beautifully when Arun is told, “We are more than matter, Arun. We are music that we make together.” That line reflects the novel’s understanding of consciousness as relationship rather than possession. Jayakumar clearly enjoys difficult subjects, including brane cosmology, quantum fields, complex systems, pragmatism, neuroscience, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. At its best, the book makes those subjects feel emotionally connected rather than academically adjacent.

The political story gives that intellectual framework urgency. Arun’s transformation unfolds alongside the Global Democratic Resistance, a movement of artists, scientists, journalists, and activists fighting regimes that have learned to control populations through fear, distraction, surveillance, and engineered pleasure. Prithvi, Arun’s teenage niece, grows from an inquisitive student into a central strategist for Project Mirage, while James, Lee, Raizel, Sumiko, and others bring personal loyalties and moral disagreements into the larger struggle. The NeurAmp technology becomes especially important because it can deepen addiction and obedience, but it can also open people to empathy. That tension leads to the book’s strongest question: whether manipulating people toward compassion is meaningfully different from manipulating them toward submission. Arun’s increasing power makes the issue personal, since saving humanity could easily become another form of ruling it.

The novel is densely written, and its abundance is both part of its character and its main challenge. Characters frequently discuss philosophers, scientific theories, religious traditions, political history, psychology, and cultural criticism at considerable length. Readers who enjoy idea-driven fiction will find plenty to engage with, though some conversations feel closer to seminars than spontaneous dialogue. The large cast and quick movement among laboratories, families, resistance cells, governments, and cosmic spaces can also make the emotional thread harder to follow. Still, the warmer domestic scenes help. Arun joking with Prithvi, friends sharing food and drinks, and characters mourning people lost to political violence give the book a human pulse beneath its enormous conceptual machinery. These relationships matter because the story’s argument about empathy would feel hollow without affection, grief, and ordinary companionship.

The final part expands the story beyond revolution into a century-long experiment in posthuman society, where humans, artificial intelligences, animals, ecosystems, and modified beings participate in a shared ethical order. Rather than presenting Arun’s victory as a neat conclusion, the book asks whether he has become a new god and whether gratitude might once again turn into obedience. Its closing insight, “The sacred was the relation itself,” brings the scientific, political, and spiritual plots into alignment. Gods and God Particles is an ambitious work of speculative fiction that wants readers to think about consciousness, power, democracy, technology, and responsibility all at once. It can be demanding, but its intellectual energy is genuine, and its belief that empathy must be actively designed, defended, and renewed gives the novel a clear and memorable center.
