Sam’s life is far from ordinary. As the daughter of two scientists who often travel for their jobs, she is left on the family farm with her doting grandfather. Her situation isn’t exactly like those of the other children her age. She is used to waiting on her parents to return from their missions, but she doesn’t exactly know many details about their work. When Sam braves the cold one winter night in order to retrieve her grandfather’s dog, she comes face to face with someone–or something–that may hold the answers to her parents’ whereabouts along with information about a mission for which Sam, too, is destined.
Journey to the Hopewell Star, by Hannah D. State, is a science fiction novel for young adults centered around the main character, Sam Sanderson. Sam inadvertently meets up with Boj, a being who appears to be around her age, and journeys through the time-space continuum to the planet Kryg at his request. Thinking her help is the only way Boj will be able to return to his planet, she agrees to go only to find herself in quite the predicament once she arrives. Sam soon learns that her appearance on Kryg is much more important than she could possibly have realized.
There is a distinct Dorothy-in-Oz feel to Sam’s character. Not only is she out of her element, but she is presented with a great responsibility that she takes seriously. Everything is new and amazing to Sam as she explores her new surroundings. The reader is taken on a journey alongside Sam and sees this world through her eyes as she seeks answers to her many questions.
The author uses this opportunity to address important environmental issues within the pages of a young adult novel. By making the story science fiction/fantasy, she is able to draw in readers and hit upon a demographic that might take these issues to heart. This is refreshing to see in this genre, especially for this age group.
Journey to the Hopewell Star is a well-written and thoughtful book with a strong main. character. I can see teachers using this book to draw some fantastic parallels between its plot and those of some classic stories like the Wizard of Oz. I highly recommend State’s work to any middle school reader looking to explore the science fiction genre for the first time or literature teacher looking for a high-interest new release to engage students.
