The Irreversible follows a physicist racing to understand an experiment linked to a powerful financial algorithm as the anomaly threatens to become a crisis humanity can no longer control. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The setup came from my long-standing interest in critical transitions—moments when a complex system crosses a threshold and can no longer return to its previous state. In physics and in markets alike, the most dangerous failures are not the loud ones but the quiet, cumulative ones that look stable until they suddenly are not. I wanted to write a story where the central threat is not a villain but irreversibility itself: a process that keeps functioning exactly as designed while the window for stopping it closes. That tension between what we can measure and what we can still undo felt like the natural engine for the novel.

Why did you choose to connect the physics anomaly with ORACLE, a powerful financial algorithm?

Because the two systems share the same mathematics and the same blind spot. A physical experiment and a market-scale algorithm are both nonlinear systems capable of feedback, amplification, and tipping points—and both are governed by institutions that trust their models more than their warning signs. Coupling the anomaly to ORACLE let me show how a purely scientific problem becomes a civilizational one the moment it touches infrastructure that no one is willing to switch off. Finance was the ideal vector: it is abstract enough to seem harmless and connected enough to reach everything.

Dr. Elena Voss is highly capable but also exhausted, stubborn, and frequently ignored. How did you develop her character?

I built Elena from the gap between competence and authority. She is the person in the room who is right early, which in most institutions is functionally the same as being wrong. Her exhaustion is not a flaw I added for texture—it is the realistic cost of carrying a warning that others have decided is inconvenient. I wanted her stubbornness to read not as heroism but as discipline: she keeps checking the data because the data does not care whether anyone listens. Writing her meant resisting the urge to reward her too quickly; the story only works if her clarity comes at a genuine price.

What do you hope readers take away from the novel’s exploration of scientific responsibility, institutional denial, automation, and the moral cost of discovery?

That responsibility does not scale automatically with capability. We are very good at building systems whose consequences outrun our governance of them, and institutional denial is rarely malicious—it is procedural, incremental, and reasonable-sounding at every step. If readers close the book asking one question, I hope it is this: in the systems we depend on, who is empowered to say stop, and would we hear them in time? Discovery always has a moral cost; the question is whether we pay it deliberately or by default.
