Unsplode: The Bold New Approach to Reconstruct Your Wealthspan and Healthspan
Posted by Literary Titan

Unsplode, by wealth manager Trevor B. Hanson and orthopedic surgeon Caleb O. Pinegar, presents a coordinated approach to money, health, and the life those resources make possible. Its central argument is that financial security and physical well-being deserve sustained attention throughout adulthood, guided by a clear understanding of what makes life meaningful. The authors organize their contributions into two complementary halves, each moving through mindset, assessment, protection, prevention, professional support, and retirement. That parallel structure gives the book coherence and makes its definition of success concrete: having the resources, capacity, and time to pursue a personally satisfying life.
Hanson’s financial chapters begin with questions about values, relationships, experiences, and legacy, then connect those priorities to the mechanics of managing wealth. He considers cash flow, diversification, insurance, estate documents, tax strategies, and the coordination of advisors. His governing principle is stated plainly: “Finances are meant to serve your life’s purpose, no more and no less” (p. 148). It’s particularly relevant to business owners, executives, and families whose financial lives involve multiple assets and professional relationships. Hanson’s emphasis on liquidity and planned spending gives his argument a useful practical dimension. He encourages readers to account for travel, family activities, and health expenses within a sustainable plan, making present enjoyment an explicit part of financial responsibility.
Pinegar develops the health side through attention to nutrition, sleep, strength, flexibility, mental health, and social connection. His most effective passages connect these subjects to specific ambitions, such as continuing to golf with children, remaining independent, or maintaining the mobility needed for travel. Those examples give readers a clear reason to undertake the daily work he describes. His observation that “There is no retirement from health” (p. 302) captures the section’s emphasis on continuing care and adaptation. Particularly useful is his distinction between completing a temporary goal and establishing a lasting habit. His retirement chapters also widen the discussion to identity, community, housing, and access to care, showing how a satisfying later life requires preparation across several connected areas.
The cousins’ frequent interjections give Unsplode a personable rhythm and demonstrate the relationship that informs their shared philosophy. Their humor and accounts of family life make the discussion accessible, while the recurring questions invite readers to examine their own priorities. Repetition sometimes slows the pace, and Hanson’s repeated promotion of his practice gives portions of the financial section a sales-oriented tone. The illustrative stories make potential consequences vivid, although the closing disclaimer identifies the apparent real-life examples as hypothetical. Pinegar’s discussion of emerging therapies would also benefit from fuller sourcing and clearer distinctions among levels of evidence. It’s strongest as a motivational introduction to purposeful planning and informed conversations with professionals. Its appeal rests in the connection it draws between everyday decisions and the experiences readers hope to preserve, encouraging them to give those experiences a deliberate place in their lives.
