The Accidental Psychic

Annie has missed her train, and it’s going to make her late for work again. She might lose her job this time, but on the plus side, the handsome Thos, who is usually on her commute, has missed the earlier train too, so things don’t look so bleak. But then the unthinkable happens – the train crashes, leaving most people dead apart from Annie and her crush. But it also leaves Annie with an unexpected ability – suddenly she can see and communicate with dead people, and when she touches someone she can see their past, present and future.
The Accidental Psychic by Carol-Anne Mason is a feel-good story with a satisfyingly dark underbelly. It gives the reader an entertaining insight into the development of a psychic medium as she discovers her talents and hones her craft. Annie is drawn from one other-worldly caper to the next, passing on important messages from beyond the grave and exorcising the malicious souls of evildoers. Along the way she solves some crimes and rights a few historical wrongs.
My favorite parts of this book were the scenes in which Annie is performing her mediumship, particularly at the spiritual center. These scenes are well written and touching.
The story overall is intriguing and well developed. It is more of a cozy fantasy story rather than a dramatic thriller, making it perfect for easy reading. Annie has an interesting gift that reveals a whole new world to her, but she seems to take it all in stride as if she had been aware of it her entire life. For fans of supernatural or paranormal fantasy novels, you will find plenty of psychic lingo and jargon in this book, like “clairaudient” or “receiving evidence”, that makes the story feel authentic.
The Accidental Psychic is an easy but riveting paranormal adventure novel that is hard to put down.
