Something Simple

Shani T Night Author Interview

The Elephant Trumpets in the Morning follows a joyful elephant whose daily dawn trumpet transforms the jungle’s initial annoyance into a shared morning tradition that builds confidence and community. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The inspiration actually came from a joyful little morning routine of my own.  My husband and I would get such a good chuckle out of it that, eventually, he started his own version.  Before we knew it, we were both looking forward to these little moments every morning.

It made me think about how something so simple, something you do just because it makes you happy, can become contagious in the best possible way. That’s really where the elephant’s story began. His morning trumpet is his own little celebration of a new day, but eventually that joy spreads to everyone around him.

What does “Elephant O’Clock” capture about the way a child’s personal ritual can grow into a shared sense of belonging?

Honestly, “Elephant O’Clock” is just a fun saying! In my household, we have a habit of naming everything or coming up with little expressions for things. It’s almost like the military and their “oh-dark-thirty.” We have our own little language, and that’s part of the fun.

But when I think about it, those little sayings and routines do create a sense of belonging, don’t they? They become something everyone recognizes and shares. That’s what happened with the elephant. What started as his own joyful morning ritual eventually became something the other animals recognized and looked forward to.

I think children experience that same thing with their families and friends. It’s those little traditions, funny expressions, and everyday moments that become special because they’re shared. Sometimes belonging is as simple as having something that makes everyone smile.

What do Reggie Howard’s close-ups and exaggerated expressions bring to the elephant’s character that you hoped would resonate with young readers?

Oh, the fun of it all! The beauty, the excitement, the personality! I think Reggie captured it beautifully. His close-ups and expressions really bring the elephant to life. You can see his joy, his excitement, and his personality without even reading a word.

And that’s something I love about children’s books. Sometimes the illustrations tell just as much of the story as the words do. I wanted children to feel the elephant’s happiness, to laugh at his expressions, and to enjoy every moment of his morning routine. I think Reggie accomplished that wonderfully.

What guided the different lesson explanations for ages three to six and six to nine, and how do the elephant facts complement them?

I really thought about how children at different ages experience stories. For the little, little ones, sometimes fewer words are better. They’re enjoying the pictures, the characters, and the fun of the story. But as children get older, they naturally start asking more questions. They want to understand why things happen and what they mean. So I wanted to give them a little more to think about.

And the elephant facts? Well, that’s just another opportunity to learn something! I love when a children’s book can entertain and educate at the same time. The story introduces children to this joyful little elephant, and the facts give them an opportunity to learn more about real elephants. It encourages curiosity and, hopefully, a few more questions!

Perfect for children ages 3 to 7, it gently encourages independence, responsibility, and a positive mindset in a way that is both fun and meaningful.

The Elephant Trumpets in the Morning

The Elephant Trumpets in the Morning by Shani T. Night is a cheerful children’s book about a little elephant whose enthusiastic morning ritual gradually transforms the lives of the animals around him. Every morning, before the sun has fully risen, he lets out a mighty trumpet that echoes through the jungle. At first, the other elephants find his early morning calls a little annoying, but he continues his routine with unmistakable joy. Soon, his trumpet becomes a familiar signal that gets the whole jungle moving. From sleepy lions and chattering parrots to swinging monkeys and smiling hippos, everyone begins to embrace the start of a new day. What begins as one little elephant’s personal habit eventually becomes a shared tradition that brings the entire herd together.

Night tells the story through playful rhymes that give the book a lively, musical rhythm. The elephant’s booming “PAHHHRRROOOO!” is especially fun and practically begs young readers to join in during storytime. There’s something endearing about a little elephant who simply loves greeting the morning and has no idea how much his enthusiasm will influence everyone else. As the animals develop their own morning routines, the story introduces children to the value of consistency, the confidence that comes from showing up each day, and the happiness that familiar rituals can bring. The idea of “Elephant O’Clock” is a particularly amusing touch, turning the elephant’s daily trumpet into something the whole jungle can look forward to.

Reggie Howard’s colorful illustrations give this picture book plenty of personality. The little elephant’s oversized blue eyes, rosy cheeks, expressive trunk, and exaggerated facial expressions make him an immediately engaging character. Close-up illustrations capture everything from his tremendous trumpeting to his delighted smiles, while the supporting animals bring their own humor to the pages. A lion yawns with its enormous mouth wide open, a brightly colored parrot chatters from its perch, and a monkey swings through the trees. The illustrations combine soft shading, bold outlines, and splashes of vivid color, often against spacious white backgrounds that keep the animals at the center of attention. The recurring images of the elephant and the playful visual details give children plenty to notice as the story unfolds.

I think what makes The Elephant Trumpets in the Morning appealing is how easily its message connects to children’s everyday experiences. Getting out of bed, getting dressed, heading to school, and finding the energy to begin another day are all familiar parts of childhood, and Night presents these ordinary moments as opportunities to build confidence and spread happiness. The book also includes age-specific explanations of its central lesson for children ages three to six and six to nine, along with a section of interesting elephant facts that extends the reading experience. Parents and educators can use the story to start conversations about morning routines, perseverance, and how one person’s positive habits can encourage others. With its energetic animal characters, rhythmic storytelling, and encouraging message, this is a warm, playful read-aloud that celebrates the small things children do every day and the joy of beginning again each morning.

Laughter and Joy

Shani T. Night Author Interview

Mr. Nap A. Lot’s Merry Christmas Adventure follows a man strolling through the streets observing the Christmas magic present in the families he sees. What was the inspiration for your story?

The inspiration for Mr. Nap A. Lot’s Merry Christmas Adventure comes from a long-standing saying in my home for over 20 years. It started with my husband, the real Mr. Nap A. Lot, and his way of explaining Christmas to our kids. His belief that “the spirit of Christmas lives in us all” has always touched me deeply. This heartfelt sentiment sparked the idea for the story, capturing the magic of Christmas through the eyes of a Mr. Nap A. Lot strolling through the streets and observing the joy in the families he sees.

Christmas is my favorite time of year, not for the gifts but for being with family and friends. What comes to mind when you think of Christmas Magic in your own life?

Christmas is my favorite time of year, and when I think of Christmas Magic in my life, I think of the love shared, the stories told, and the memories made. The air feels magical as we prepare for the Holiday Season. It’s truly a time to believe in something bigger than ourselves. I’ve always noticed how people come alive during this season, filling rooms with laughter and joy. There’s something about the lights, the evergreen smell, the fireplaces, the family togetherness, the freshly baked goods, and the sound of children laughing – all of these ingredients make Christmas so memorable for me.

What was your favorite scene in this story?

I have so many favorite scenes from beginning to end, but the one where he finds love and the magic of Christmas sets his spirit free is my absolute favorite. I also can’t help but cherish the moments where he witnesses kindness and selfless giving. Finding the true meaning of Christmas is another favorite scene, making it a tough choice. Every time I re-read the book, it feels like a toss-up between these wonderful moments.

I hope the Interesting Tales series continues in other books. If so, where will the story take readers?

Thank you! I hope the Interesting Tales series continues as well. I initially planned for six books in the series, so I’m thrilled it’s continuing to grow. This series is one of my favorites because it allowed me to have fun and not set boundaries. I want kids to gain a love for reading, and if one of my stories can do that, I’ve done my job. This series has given me so much joy and has allowed me to be a kid at heart. I have five new books already written, each covering new and funny events about families, animals, and another fun holiday. I’m continuously inspired to add to this series and take readers on delightful journeys. For an author, I think the best ingredient is inspiration, and that’s all I can ask for.

I can say that the Interesting Tales collection has three more books written and ready for release in 2025, all aimed at continuing the tradition of bringing imaginative and clever stories to young audiences.

A Heartwarming Message

Shani T. Night Author Interview

In The Little Boy Who Craved Thanksgiving, Little Ricky’s wise and loving grandmother teaches him how to be truly grateful for his many blessings and to appreciate much more than just the delicious foods he relishes each year. What was the idea, or spark, that first set off the need to write this story?

The initial inspiration, or spark, for writing this story emerged from my desire to capture the essence of the season and the profound emotions associated with family, home, and love. In search of this inspiration, I delved into the memories of my childhood, recalling a true story that has resonated with me throughout my life. This recollection became the driving force, the very spark that ignited the need to craft this narrative.

What was your approach to writing the interactions between Little Ricky and his grandmother?

My approach to writing the interactions between Little Ricky and his grandmother aimed to highlight the wisdom that can be gained from our elders. I also aimed to emphasize the importance of clear and meaningful communication. My inspiration stemmed from the interactions I’ve experienced with my family during holiday celebrations. In large gatherings, there is a constant buzz of activity, and there’s always someone around to lend a hand or share in the moments.

I find the process of writing children’s books fascinating. Can you tell us a little bit about your approach to imagining, drafting, and writing this book in particular?

I aimed to create a fall book that captured the warmth of home and the essence of both autumn and the holiday season. Maintaining a positive message in my books is of utmost importance to me, and I wanted to remain true to my writing style, which centers around recounting true stories that have deeply inspired me. The character Little Ricky draws inspiration from a real-life event from my childhood centered around Thanksgiving and the invaluable lessons my brother and I learned at an early age. My primary goal was to authentically capture not only the lessons I gained from that experience but also to convey the genuine spirit of the holiday season.

When it came to drafting my story, I began by identifying a central theme and engaging in brainstorming sessions to confirm that this was the story I genuinely wanted to convey. Then, I outlined all the elements I aimed to incorporate into the narrative. While crafting children’s books can present unique challenges, it’s also an enjoyable endeavor. It requires a steadfast commitment to stay true to the story’s core message and not let the constraints overshadow the creative process. I prefer to leave fine-tuning and parameter adjustments for the editing stage, allowing the initial creativity to flow freely during the drafting process.

What is the next book you are working on, and when can readers look for it on shelves?

I’m thrilled to announce my upcoming book, Mr. Nap A. Lot’s Merry Christmas Adventure. This book is crafted to enchant early readers with its delightful blend of simple riddles and a whimsical narrative, ensuring that the joy of reading continues to flourish. Beyond the whimsical storytelling, it carries a heartwarming message that leaves a lasting impact, reminding readers that Christmas is about more than just presents and decorations. It’s a time to cherish our loved ones, spread holiday cheer, and embrace the magic of giving back to others. Available early October.
