Frustrations and Challenges
Posted by Literary-Titan
This Book Is Not Ready! invites children to become part of the creative process as a book gradually takes shape through imagination, experimentation, and plenty of ridiculous mistakes. What inspired you to create a children’s book about a character trying to create its own story?
I’ve always wanted to create a character that was a little more expressive and unpredictable, someone who could break the fourth wall, be stubborn, make mistakes, and still find something positive in those mistakes. I wanted the Narrator to feel human in that way, even though he’s just a little scribbled character trying to figure things out.
Having already created two children’s books, I wanted to try something different with This Book Is Not Ready! My goal was to create a story that anyone could enjoy, whether they’re a young child, a teenager, or even an adult. I’ve always loved seeing people smile and laugh while reading my books, but some of my favorite moments are when they don’t realize I’m watching. I’ll catch someone out of the corner of my eye turning the book upside down or shaking it simply because the Narrator told them to. Those moments are exactly what I hoped to create: a story that doesn’t just entertain readers but actually pulls them into the experience and lets them have a little fun along the way.
How did you develop the personality of your scribbly little main character, and what do you hope children recognize about themselves in a character who doesn’t always know what to do next?
I actually based a lot of the Narrator’s personality on myself. As a relatively new illustrator, I’ve experienced plenty of the frustrations and challenges that come with creating a book, and I wanted to incorporate some of those experiences into his character. He’s stubborn, impatient, and sometimes a little dramatic when things don’t go his way, but he also refuses to give up.
Throughout the story, the Narrator encounters many of the same kinds of problems that writers and illustrators face, only exaggerated in a humorous way. Even when everything seems to be going wrong, and he doesn’t have the help of his author or illustrator, he keeps trying different approaches until he finally manages to complete his book.
I hope children recognize that it’s okay to make mistakes, get frustrated, or not know exactly what they’re doing. Nobody has everything figured out, and sometimes the things that go wrong can lead to something even better than what we originally imagined. I wanted the Narrator to show that a little determination, creativity, and a sense of humor can go a long way.
What do you hope children learn about experimenting with ideas and trying different approaches?
I hope children learn that creativity doesn’t always have to follow a perfect plan, and that sometimes our mistakes can lead to our best ideas. I’m actually someone who tends to be very particular about my artwork. I spend a lot of time correcting little details and making sure everything looks exactly how I imagined it. But creating This Book Is Not Ready! was a completely different experience.
Even though I started with a storyboard, I constantly found myself changing things as I went. I’d be illustrating a scene and suddenly think of something funnier or a different way the Narrator might react to the situation. Instead of sticking strictly to my original plan, I let those ideas shape the story. In many ways, I was discovering what would happen next right alongside the Narrator.
The mistakes, messy illustrations, and unexpected situations became some of my favorite parts of the book. I hope children take away the idea that they don’t have to get everything right the first time. Sometimes it’s worth trying something different, being a little silly, and seeing where their imagination takes them.
What kinds of creative activities or conversations would you love to see children explore after reading This Book Is Not Ready!?
More than anything, I hope the book inspires children to pick up a pencil, create their own characters, and come up with stories of their own without worrying so much about getting every little detail right. I want them to understand that drawing and storytelling don’t have to be perfect to be fun.
My youngest daughter, Charlotte, is actually a big part of why I started creating children’s books and was a major inspiration behind This Book Is Not Ready! One of my favorite things is sitting down and drawing with her. We don’t just draw pictures; we come up with silly ideas, invent ridiculous characters, and laugh at the crazy things we create together. Sometimes the most entertaining ideas are the ones we never planned in the first place.
I’d love for other children and their parents to experience that same kind of creativity together. Whether it’s drawing a funny character, making up a ridiculous story, or just seeing how silly their imaginations can get, I hope the book encourages them to have fun creating something of their own. Sometimes all it takes is a pencil, a little imagination, and the willingness to make a mess.

Balu the Paw Traveler
Posted by Literary Titan

Balu the Paw-Traveler Visits the Seven Modern Wonders by Miry Bejerano is a cheerful travel adventure that turns geography and world culture into an imaginative trip for young readers. Balu, a friendly black puppy, invites children to climb aboard an imaginary airplane, train, and hot-air balloon as he travels to Chichen Itza, Machu Picchu, Christ the Redeemer, the Colosseum, Petra, the Taj Mahal, and the Great Wall of China. At each stop, a local animal friend welcomes Balu and shares a few facts about the landmark, along with greetings, foods, traditions, or activities connected with the country. That repeating structure gives the book an easy rhythm and makes each new destination feel familiar while still offering something different.
One of the book’s strongest features is the way it encourages children to participate instead of simply listening to information. Readers are asked to imagine themselves flying through the clouds, practice samba steps in Brazil, try a yoga pose in India, and wield an imaginary bamboo stick at the Great Wall. The cultural details are presented in small, kid-friendly pieces, such as tacos in Mexico, ceviche and pan flutes in Peru, gelato and pizza in Italy, and hummus and dates in Jordan. There are also simple introductions to words such as hola, ciao, marhaban, and namaste. The result feels part story, part introductory geography lesson, and part activity book, with Balu serving as an enthusiastic guide.
The pages are filled with bright, colorful cartoon scenes showing Balu at each landmark alongside animals such as a jaguar, llama, toucan, camel, tiger, and panda. The landmarks are large and immediately recognizable, while speech bubbles make the encounters feel a little like a comic book. I especially liked the “Balu’s Notes” pages, which mix maps, flags, food illustrations, cultural objects, and short facts into scrapbook-style layouts. The pictures do more than decorate the story because they help young readers connect a place with its landscape, flag, language, food, and traditions. Balu’s expressive face and frequent appearances in tiny planes, trains, and balloons also keep the educational material playful.
The book also extends the adventure well beyond the final destination. After Balu returns home, readers get a family trivia game, thirty questions based on the journey, several “Adventure Snapshot” pages for recording their own trips, and a glossary of words introduced throughout the book. Those extras make the book especially suited to families, classrooms, or children who like to revisit what they’ve learned instead of putting the story away after one reading. Balu the Paw-Traveler Visits the Seven Modern Wonders is an energetic introduction to world travel that combines facts, imagination, movement, language, and colorful illustration in a way that’s accessible for curious young readers. It leaves children with the sense that learning about faraway places can be something they actively take part in.

Winston The Titan Terrier : Adventures In Ancient Egypt (Book 2)
Posted by Literary Titan

Winston the Titan Terrier returns for another thrilling quest, this time alongside his loyal friends Diesel and Teddy. Their mission in Adventures in Ancient Egypt by award-winning authors Colin Peter Van Dongen and Mia Van Dongen leads them through a labyrinth of twisting tunnels, riddled with ingenious traps and mind-bending puzzles. Each solution propels them deeper into danger, and each wrong move threatens disaster. Along the way, formidable foes emerge, determined to halt their progress. At the heart of their journey lies a daunting challenge: stop Sad Face, a mischievous yet oddly endearing octopus, from rewriting Egyptian history, or risk arriving too late.
From the very first page, the story bursts with energy. The fast-paced narrative kept me eagerly turning pages, invested in whether Winston, Teddy, and Diesel could outwit the countless challenges placed before them. For children, the sheer variety of puzzles, traps, and encounters ensures that every reread reveals a new detail or hidden layer of fun.
The characters shine with personality. Winston, Diesel, and Teddy are more than companions; each stands out as a hero in their own right. Readers will find it difficult to choose a favorite among them. Meanwhile, the villains, Sad Face the alien octopus and Smokestrike the sly ninja cat, add both tension and comic mischief, often stealing scenes despite their role as obstacles.
Equally impressive are the illustrations by Colin Peter Van Dongen. Detailed, crisp, and vividly colored, the images elevate the storytelling. Their clarity, reminiscent of AI-rendered sharpness, invites readers to pause, explore, and savor every page.
Winston the Titan Terrier: Adventures in Ancient Egypt is a delightful read for all ages. It blends clever storytelling, dynamic characters, and striking illustrations into one unforgettable package. Highly recommended for children, and equally enjoyable for adults who love fast-paced adventures filled with heart and humor.

The More the Merrier: A Multi-Sensory Musical Journey Offering an Interactive and Fun Way for Kids to Learn About Diversity and Inclusion
Posted by Literary Titan

Meridith Taylor Strout’s The More the Merrier is a delightful children’s book that celebrates inclusion and the power of music. The story follows Ella, a vibrant little girl who receives a set of musical instruments for her birthday. Struggling to play them all at once, she has an idea—invite friends to join in! What begins as a solo dream turns into a joyous band, where each child brings their unique personality and instrument to create a harmonious celebration of togetherness.
I loved how Strout’s writing combines simplicity with warmth. Ella’s excitement over her birthday gift felt so genuine. The moment she opens the brightly wrapped present and names each instrument felt almost nostalgic, like a memory of childhood wonder. The book beautifully conveys how such small, shared joys can spark big connections. The illustrations by Remesh Ram are bright and engaging. They bring the characters and the setting to life. One of my favorite visuals was Ella and her friends parading through the park, instruments in hand, while people clapped and cheered. It was such a colorful, lively moment. It’s not just the images but the way they align with the story that adds to its charm. Together, the text and pictures create a vivid experience for young readers. When she spots Zoe on the swings or Jacob playing basketball, her approach is simple and kind. The book doesn’t preach; it shows. This approach makes it accessible for kids and a helpful tool for parents or teachers discussing friendship and inclusion.
The More the Merrier is a joy to read and share. It’s perfect for kids aged 4-8, but I’d recommend it to anyone who loves stories about kindness and community. This book would shine in classrooms, libraries, or family storytime. It’s a little book with a big heart, and I can’t imagine a better way to remind us that we truly rise by lifting others.

The Power of Imagination
Posted by Literary_Titan

Winston The Titan Terrier: The Cosmic Bone follows a clever superhero dog who loses his bone and goes on a quest to find it. What was the inspiration for your story?
We have an incredibly entertaining Boston Terrier named Winston. He absolutely loves snacks, especially a South African treat called biltong, or beef jerky as it’s known in America. He’s also a huge sports fan and can often be found chewing on basketballs and rugby balls, all while constantly nagging us to play with him. He absolutely loves to win! Mia has known him her entire life and absolutely adores him. So, when we collaborated on her own book concept at the age of five, she didn’t hesitate to turn him into Winston the Titan Terrier, a superdog with a unique backpack that can launch all sorts of awesome sporting equipment and gadgets.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
Some of the important ideas that we wanted to share in this book were:
- The Power of Friendship and Teamwork: The book highlights the importance of cooperation and support in overcoming challenges.
- Overcoming Adversity: It emphasizes the theme of resilience and perseverance in the face of difficulties.
- The Value of Curiosity and Learning: The story encourages exploration and a thirst for knowledge.
- Interactive Storytelling and Engagement: The book offers puzzles, mysteries, and interactive elements to keep readers engaged.
- Adventure and Exploration: It takes readers on journeys to new and exciting worlds.
- The Thrill of the Quest: The plot involves thrilling adventures, gadgets, and a formidable villain.
- The Imagination at Work: The book explores the power of imagination to see the world differently.
- Appeal to a Wide Audience: The story is designed to resonate with readers of all ages.
What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?
My personal favourite, due to my love for big waves, is the scene where Smokestrike activates his Sea Sweeper device, which has the power to truly generate gigantic waves. Winston must quickly find a way to avoid being completely overwhelmed as one of these massive waves is barrelling towards him.
Some of Mia’s favourite scenes is when Teddy, the Australian Shepherd, leads Winston through secret entrances to his laboratory deep beneath the Bone Shop. There, Winston discovers a special cosmic bone that grants him incredible SuperDog abilities. As Winston demonstrates the bone’s powers, they stumble upon an ancient tunnel system that was built thousands of years earlier. Using the cosmic bone, Winston is able to translate the ancient text on the walls, revealing that they must complete five challenges to unlock a portal capable of transporting them anywhere in the universe. One of the most exciting interactive challenges on their journey is the Milky Way Gate. Here Teddy and Winston need to unlock a door by solving a code in front of them, using hints from various animal shapes illuminated by star systems.
Can you tell us what the second book will be about and when it will be available for fans to purchase?
We are excited to communicate that we have already storyboarded and mapped out Books 2 and 3 as part of the series over the last few weeks. The story is set to become even more exciting and intense as it unfolds, with the introduction of the ‘Time Twister’ device. Winston and the other characters will face off against old and new intergalactic villains across various time periods, as they journey through Mia’s favourite moments in history. We are aiming to launch Book 2 on World Book Day next year. In this instalment, Winston is transported back to Ancient Egypt in its original glory, where he must find a way back to his own timeline and save his world.
We plan to continue delivering all the adventure, mystery, secret tunnels, and interactive puzzles, ensuring readers of all ages remain captivated by what is going to happen next.

Winston Titan Terrier : The Cosmic Bone (Adventure Book 1)
Posted by Literary Titan

In Winston The Titan Terrier: The Cosmic Bone, authors Mia van Dongen and Colin van Dongen introduce readers to Winston, a clever Boston Terrier with a spy alias, Titan Terrier. Winston’s adventure begins when he loses his precious bone and embarks on a thrilling quest to recover it. Unknown to him, this is no ordinary lost item. Smokestrike, a ninja black cat, is behind the disappearance. Smokestrike wants to steal the secrets of Winston’s transformative backpack and sporting equipment. The result is an action-packed children’s book filled with clever twists and engaging challenges.
One aspect I loved about this picture book is Winston himself. He’s a charming character surrounded by a diverse group of dog friends, each with unique skills contributing to the story. This adds depth to the story and serves as an educational element that introduces young readers to various dog breeds and their characteristics. The authors enhance the reading experience by posing questions directly to the audience, encouraging them to spot hidden details or predict the next move in the mystery. This interactive approach keeps readers engaged and makes the story feel more dynamic.
The story is engaging and filled with unexpected details that take readers through various imaginative settings. The illustrations are another highlight. They are beautifully realistic and draw readers deeper into Winston’s adventurous world. The inclusion of photos of the real Winston at the beginning of the book is a delightful touch. It allows readers to connect even more with the character.
Winston The Titan Terrier: The Cosmic Bone is a fun, educational, and visually captivating picture book. The story’s interactive elements and vibrant artwork make it a worthwhile addition to any child’s bookshelf.
