Building a Relationship

Alicia Smith Author Interview

A Father’s Love follows a little girl enjoying an outing with her father, her biggest hero, as she receives his advice and encouragement about her upcoming ballet performance. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I was inspired to create a story that is based on a positive connection between a child and her father. I had the desire to showcase a young girl who receives motivation because it demonstrates that she can achieve whatever she sets her mind to. She is building on her personal courage, and she is learning to become a self-directed learner.

Is there anything from your own life included in A Father’s Love?

The story is not related to my life but it’s a constant reminder that a father’s presence, time, and consistent effort is required when you’re building a relationship with your child.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Olivia Smith H.?

The art collaboration process was smooth and easy with Olivia. I shared my thought process by explaining and being detailed on how I would like each picture to look. She provided me with sketches and colors, asked me questions, and we used a great amount of teamwork. I’m pleased with the outcome of the book.

Can young readers look forward to more stories featuring Rachelle and her father? What are you currently working on?

I’m currently thinking about my next book. I have topics in mind, and I plan on starting the writing process very soon. I may do a series from my first book, then I will create another book that features Rachelle.

“A Father’s Love” will allow readers to understand the significance of personal motivation, establishing a healthy relationship between a father and daughter, recognizing the importance of quality time, and ensure positive role modeling.

A Father’s Love

A Father’s Love, by Alicia Smith, is a heartwarming story that beautifully captures the bond between a father and his daughter, Rachelle. The narrative follows little Rachelle as she enjoys a day of fun and adventure with her biggest hero—her dad. From playful outings at the playground to indulging in sweet treats, Rachelle’s day is filled with joy. However, as evening approaches, she begins to feel nervous about her upcoming ballet performance. With her father’s unwavering love and support, Rachelle must summon the courage to face her fears and step onto the stage for the first time in front of a large audience. The question lingers: Will Rachelle find the confidence to shine, or will her doubts hold her back?

This tender story is a touching portrayal of a father’s supportive role in his child’s life. I was particularly moved by how the father instinctively knew when to let Rachelle take charge and when to offer reassurance. The narrative seamlessly illustrates the powerful connection between love, support, and self-confidence. The gentle pacing of the story, coupled with Olivia Smith H.’s lovely illustrations, enhances the emotional depth of the tale. Each page is brought to life with soft, vibrant colors that add another layer of warmth and charm to the book.

A Father’s Love is as sweet as summer strawberries—a delightful read for all ages. The story’s message of love and support is perfectly conveyed, making it a comforting and uplifting choice. It’s a beautiful depiction of gentle parental guidance and familial love, leading to a conclusion that leaves the reader feeling cherished and embraced. This exceptional collaboration between author and illustrator has created a book that resonates deeply, and I eagerly look forward to more from this talented duo. Alicia Smith’s engaging tale makes a wonderful addition to a family library.

Helpful and Fun In a Meaningful Way

Alicia Smith Author Interview

“The Mess” follows two young kangaroos as the disappearance of their teddy bears propels them into a day of adventure and teamwork to solve the mystery, highlighting the importance of familial love and problem-solving. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I was inspired to write this story because of my preshool classroom that I was working in at the time. As a teacher, I had to think creatively and outside of the box when it came to encouraging the children to clean up in between transition times. Asking the children to clean up was not helpful, so I created clean time into a fun game, and the children were receptive to that. The children learned about teamwork and responsibility.

Can you share any behind-the-scenes details about the collaboration process with Olivia Smith H. for the illustrations?

I was referred to Olivia. We had an introduction to each other, and we both shared our ideas and thoughts. Then we mutually decided to work with each other. Olivia and I were in constant communication about the illustrations. I shared that I wanted vibrant colors and she suggested watercolor paint. I went with her idea after she shown me an example of a picture. She shared her insight of what will work and I shared my feedback as well. We had a smooth process with working with each other.

What message or lesson do you hope children and parents take away from The Mess?

My hope is that children can learn that tidying up and cleaning can help them with organization, accountability, teamwork, and using a game to complete a task such as cleaning their space can be helpful and fun in a meaningful way.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I have an idea about my next book but I have not put anything on paper. My ideas are still flowing and I have not made a decision on when I will release another book.

The Mess

The Mess by Alicia Smith is a delightful and heartwarming children’s book that captures the essence of childhood exploration and familial love. Young kangaroos Marie and Elise and their mom embark on a day filled with adventure and creativity. Their nature walk is a splendid depiction of curiosity and wonder, while the afternoon art time reflects the innocence and joy of childhood. The sudden disappearance of their favorite teddy bears introduces a relatable crisis that many children and parents will recognize.

Alicia Smith expertly portrays the close-knit bond of this kangaroo family, highlighting the importance of working together to solve problems. The narrative is engaging and soothing, making it an excellent choice for young readers.

The illustrations by Olivia Smith H. are a true highlight of the book. Her gentle lines and soft watercolors create a magical, almost ethereal atmosphere that perfectly complements the story. The vibrant depiction of the kangaroo world is both enchanting and comforting, inviting readers into a bright and lovely setting. The interplay between text and illustrations enhances the storytelling, making each page a visual and literary delight.

One of the aspects I liked most about The Mess is the portrayal of the mother’s role. Her expert solution to the missing teddy bears not only resolves the conflict but also teaches an important lesson about organization and teamwork. This aspect of the story is handled with such warmth and wisdom that it leaves a lasting impression.

The Mess is a precious picture book that beautifully captures a day in the life of a kangaroo family. It is suitable for all ages and is particularly perfect for bedtime reading. This book is certain to warm your heart and leave you with a sense of contentment as you drift off to dreamland.
