Heroic Role Models
Posted by Literary-Titan

Sophie the Monarch Butterfly: Mission to Mexico follows a small young Monarch butterfly who is determined to lead her group of butterflies to Mexico even when faced with challenges. What was the inspiration for your story?
We all know that Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops and the pesticides they promote can wreak havoc on our farms, food, and environment. But did you know they are also playing a big role in the quickly disappearing Monarchs? Roundup doesn’t kill Monarchs directly but rather kills their primary food source, the milkweed plant.
I belong to an organization called Friends of the Earth which is dedicated to saving endangered species including insects such as bees and butterflies.
When I read in their newsletter that the North American Monarch Butterfly population has declined by 90 percent due to the use of Roundup on the milkweed plant, their only food source, I decided to write a story about these beautiful creatures and their incredible migratory patterns. As an author of books for children, I am always looking for heroic role models who kids can relate to. Monarch butterflies who appear delicate and fragile but who must undertake this amazing journey in order to survive seemed like a good adventure storyline if I could create a strong lead character in a butterfly. Sophie the Monarch Butterfly is about a precious and brave little butterfly who we follow from the moment she hatches through her life cycle as she leads an annual migration of Monarchs 3000 miles from North America to Mexico. She must overcome obstacles and disbeliefs from her own community along the way. Sophie is also the name of my first grandchild, and both granddaughter and butterfly share the same attributes of belief in self, leadership, good judgment, and caring for others.
What educational aspects were important for you to include in this children’s book?
Scientists do not fully understand the navigational abilities of Monarch Butterflies. Every fall, North American monarch butterflies make the journey from their breeding grounds to their overwintering sites. Sophie emerges from her cocoon on a milkweed plant east of the Rocky Mountains, near the Canadian border. As the weather turns colder, she joins other monarchs traveling from their summer breeding grounds south to Mexico. She survives this long journey by making stops at refuge sites with abundant nectar from milkweed plants and shelter from the harsh elements. She instinctively knows to overwinter along with millions of other monarch butterflies in the central mountain forests, clinging to Oyamel trees from October to late March. The mountain hillsides of Oyamel forest provide an ideal climate for Sophie. The temperature is mild. The humidity in the Oyamel forest assures the monarchs won’t dry out, allowing them to conserve their energy. When the weather turns warm, Sophie starts her return journey, but only a short distance before she lays her own eggs on a milkweed plant and, after her caterpillars hatch, stays behind as they continue their journey north. Her journey and life cycle are over along with the story.
The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator?
I think I’ll let my dear friend, Linda Chambers, who illustrated Sophie address this question. For me, all I can say is that we worked together, two hands in one glove, knowing that for a children’s book, the illustrations tell the story as much if not more than the words. I changed words as Linda’s sketches came to life to help her make them even more powerful. Take it away Linda…
“I’m very familiar with Celia’s work and was thrilled that she’d asked me to create Sophie; at the same time, the task of bringing such an important story to life was daunting. Celia’s Sophie is a hero, a champion. Sophie matters. It all came down to both understanding and honoring the story Celia was telling. We divided up the text, stanza by stanza. We knew the number of pages we’d have to work with. How much could be told by a single illustration, most of which would be spread across two pages? Celia’s poem is powerful, lyrical, and extremely visual. I sketched a variety of possible illustrations based on her text. Gradually, Sophie came to life for both of us. Celia was supportive and enthusiastic from beginning to end. Every suggestion she made lifted the work.”
What is the next book that you are working on, and when can your fans expect it to be out?
I always write about endangered species because as time goes on, the majority of these species become more endangered due to population growth, corporate greed, poaching, and sadly, game hunting for sport. If just one child is captured by the story of a baby elephant, honey bee, red panda, or butterfly and is motivated to get involved, then the story has value beyond simply being a sweet story about an animal or insect. A good example is my next book, Charlotte, A Yellowstone Wolf Pup in which the main character is a wolf pup whose mother is an Alpha Wolf, a leader of a pack of 12 wolves in Yellowstone National Park. Charlotte is a very independent little pup and must learn that, in order to survive in the wilds of the park, she must conform to the rules of the pack. Charlotte, Yellowstone Pup will be coming out in early 2025. I want to mention that, once I’ve completed the story, I research which charities are most impactful when it comes to teaching or actively saving the endangered species in the story. I use Charity Navigator to vet my choices. When I receive a royalty check from Leschenault Press for a specific book, I donate the entire amount to one of the charities listed on the back cover of the book.

For children of all ages, Sophie Monarch Butterfly, Mission to Mexico explores what it takes to believe in yourself and take the lead when the welfare of others is at stake. It is also a story of one of our most endangered species, Monarch Butterflies, and their inspiring and courageous annual migration from North America to Mexico and back again.

Building a Relationship
Posted by Literary-Titan

A Father’s Love follows a little girl enjoying an outing with her father, her biggest hero, as she receives his advice and encouragement about her upcoming ballet performance. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I was inspired to create a story that is based on a positive connection between a child and her father. I had the desire to showcase a young girl who receives motivation because it demonstrates that she can achieve whatever she sets her mind to. She is building on her personal courage, and she is learning to become a self-directed learner.
Is there anything from your own life included in A Father’s Love?
The story is not related to my life but it’s a constant reminder that a father’s presence, time, and consistent effort is required when you’re building a relationship with your child.
The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Olivia Smith H.?
The art collaboration process was smooth and easy with Olivia. I shared my thought process by explaining and being detailed on how I would like each picture to look. She provided me with sketches and colors, asked me questions, and we used a great amount of teamwork. I’m pleased with the outcome of the book.
Can young readers look forward to more stories featuring Rachelle and her father? What are you currently working on?
I’m currently thinking about my next book. I have topics in mind, and I plan on starting the writing process very soon. I may do a series from my first book, then I will create another book that features Rachelle.

Transforming into a Powerful Third, Fourth, or Fifth Grade Navigator of School Success
Posted by Literary Titan

Transforming Into a Powerful Third, Fourth, or Fifth Grade Navigator of School Success is a delightful and practical guide for young students aiming to thrive in school. It’s filled with over 100 strategies, tips, and exercises designed to help kids build strong habits, develop positive relationships with teachers, and navigate the often-tricky world of upper elementary school. The book’s friendly tone, interactive elements, and charming characters like Powerful Pencil and Successful Stapler make it an engaging read for kids.
One of the things I love most about this book is its straightforward and encouraging approach. Dr. Todd Feltman doesn’t just tell students what to do, he explains why each strategy is important. For instance, in the first chapter, kids are advised to start their day with a healthy routine, including stretching and eating a good breakfast. The reasoning behind these tips is clearly laid out, making it easier for kids to understand the value of forming good habits. I can easily see how these simple, practical steps could make a big difference in a child’s school day.
The writing is perfectly pitched for its audience. Clear, upbeat, and accessible. I appreciate how Dr. Feltman includes opportunities for self-reflection throughout the book. Each chapter ends with a “Reflection Time,” prompting students to think about which strategies they want to adopt and why. This not only reinforces the lessons but also empowers kids to take ownership of their learning journey. The interactive elements, such as spaces for drawing and note-taking, add a fun, hands-on dimension that helps keep young readers engaged.
Transforming Into a Powerful Third, Fourth, or Fifth Grade Navigator of School Success is a fantastic resource for kids in the upper elementary grades, especially those who might need a little extra help getting organized or building confidence in their abilities. Teachers and parents will also find it a useful tool for guiding children toward academic success.

Gratitude
Posted by Literary-Titan

Pixie and the Elethunk follows a young girl who believes having an exotic animal as a pet would make her unique and special and the adventure she goes on to learn an important lesson. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
When I was quite small I begged my grandparents to get me a monkey. Believe it or not, they did. I was so excited, but the monkey for its part was not thrilled to meet me. It was very aggressive and I saw clearly that some animals weren’t capable of being gentle pets. I realized that the perfect pet would have to be as sweet as my two dogs were. They were black labs. To be honest, this is a lesson from my own childhood, a value that I seem to return to daily.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
Gratitude is my favorite theme. I believe that if we live in gratitude we won’t want for much. There is an exercise that I love called, “Gimme five.” That means when you awaken, every morning think of five things that you are thankful for. The thing I love most about the exercise is that once it becomes daily, for the rest of the day you’ll have blessings popping into your head. It’s awe-inspiring!
What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?
My favorite scene was, of course, the giraffe that’s stuck in the fireplace. I giggled the whole way through!
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
I’ve just finished releasing a tween novel called, On The Wings Of Wishes It is by far my best writing. Pick it up on Amazon!

Or will she discover that the love that’s right under her nose is even better?
Award-wining artist, author, and poet, Angel Dunworth has penned a story with an interesting moral, that can soothe kids of all ages. The story, “Pixie and The Elethunk” asks kids to find the blessing that they already live in. Dunworth’s colorful, cut-paper illustrations bring this imaginary tale to life. Best of all, this lesson in gratitude is valuable every day of the year. “Pixie and The Elethunk”
is an amazing addition to any library.

Appreciate the Differences
Posted by Literary-Titan

Willard DoGooder and the Trail of Friends follows a dog in a new class who has trouble making new friends until he gets the following advice: name the difference, find the good, and move on with kindness. What was the inspiration for your story?
My kids are the inspiration for the story. There was one specific situation that was the catalyst for the book. My kids were at the playground and a curious friend repeatedly asked what was wrong with one of my kid’s eyes. It upset one of my other kids and also caused the curious friend to walk away. This all happened around the time we found out that my child with the beautiful, and maybe a little differently shaped eyes, has a syndrome. I knew we would be getting more questions. How could my husband and I teach our kids how to navigate differences in a way that is kind and inclusive, instead of isolating and divisive? I wrote the story as a way to process everything. A poignant playground situation led to reflecting on how we are all different in some way. We all feel different at times. The characters are based on my kids and situations we have worked through together. The three-step process has been helpful for our family, but there are many ways to handle differences. My hope for the book is that it will encourage conversation about differences in an open, positive, respectful, and inclusive way.
I loved the unique characters you have created in your book, especially Layla Squirrel. What character did you enjoy writing for? Was there one that was more challenging to write for?
Thank you! All of the characters are based on my dog and 4 children. Willard is based on my dog, a German shorthaired pointer, who is not named Willard, but I always thought he looked like one. The four friends that Willard meets on the trail are based off of my kids and situations we have navigated with them. Each character has personality traits and gifts that I see in my kids. For example, my oldest wears glasses, and when he was 4 years old, he recruited two of his friends to help him bury his glasses in the mulch on the school playground. It took two days to find them. He really did not want to wear glasses. One of his gifts that is so fantastic is that he is a magic maker. He enjoys elevating any situation to make it extra special. This became Tommy Tiger. The character that I found the toughest to write was Layla Squirrel. I knew I wanted to have her bring everyone together, but went back and forth over what all these animals could realistically eat together. Throughout the story are bits and pieces of my family with a story behind the story.
What educational aspects were important for you to include in this children’s book?
My mission was to write a story that promotes kindness and embracing differences. Each friend that Willard DoGooder meets on the trail, teaches him how we can approach differences, learn from one another, and appreciate each other. The world feels more polarized these days, and I think it is important for my kids to know that if you don’t think the same, or look the same, or act the same, you can be friends. Also, sometimes you may not have a friendship, but you can still be kind and appreciate the differences. My hope is that reading the book together will encourage conversations about difference in an open, curious, positive and inclusive way.
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?
This is my first children’s book and I am excited to write more Willard DoGooder books! Currently, I am working on a story about affirmations for kids. After that, I have a few ideas for the next Willard DoGooder tale.

Willard DoGooder has trouble making friends in his new class. Things are just … different. One day, he spots a magical trail and sets out on an adventure where he meets new friends, learns how to think through differences, and celebrate others just as they are.
Each friend that Willard DoGooder meets on the trail teaches Willard exactly how we can approach differences, learn from one another, and appreciate each other’s gifts. Over the course of the book, Willard learns a three-step process for approaching differences in others: name the difference, find something good about it, and move on with kindness.
With characters based on the author’s children and the real-life issues they’ve learned how to work through together, Willard DoGooder and the Trail of Friends is a fantastic adventure grounded with a message that we can all use in our daily life. Willard DoGooder and the Trail of Friends is a beautifully illustrated story about how our differences aren’t that different when we love and accept one another just as we are. Parents and caregivers will appreciate the book’s straightforward and simple message that show kids exactly how to treat someone when they notice a difference between them, and start conversations about appreciating and encouraging each other.

Pigs Have Wings
Posted by Literary Titan

Pigs Have Wings, by Kathleen Welton, is a charming and whimsical tale that follows Miz Peg, a pig with big dreams of dancing and singing. Despite the challenges that come with being a pig, Miz Peg is determined to pursue her passions. With the support and encouragement of her friends, she discovers that she is capable of much more than she initially believed.
What I love most about this book is its uplifting message about perseverance and the importance of having a support system. Miz Peg’s journey is a heartwarming reminder that even when things seem difficult, having the right people around you can make all the difference. The story is filled with positivity and optimism, making it a delightful read for both children and adults alike. The writing is engaging and accessible, with a rhythmic quality that adds to the book’s charm. The language is simple yet effective, allowing readers of all ages to connect with the story and its characters.
The illustrations, by Chau Pham, perfectly complement the narrative, bringing Miz Peg and her world to life with vibrant colors and expressive details. One of the standout aspects of Pigs Have Wings is how it subtly weaves in lessons about self-belief and the power of community. Miz Peg’s dreams might seem far-fetched for a pig, but the story shows that with determination and the encouragement of friends, even the most unlikely goals can be achieved. It’s a beautiful message that resonates well with readers and leaves a lasting impression.
Pigs Have Wings is a delightful and inspiring book that would be perfect for young readers who love stories about animals and dreams coming true. It’s also a great choice for parents and educators looking for a positive and engaging story to share with children. Kathleen Welton has crafted a lovely tale that reminds us all of the importance of dreaming big and supporting one another along the way.

A Father’s Love
Posted by Literary Titan

A Father’s Love, by Alicia Smith, is a heartwarming story that beautifully captures the bond between a father and his daughter, Rachelle. The narrative follows little Rachelle as she enjoys a day of fun and adventure with her biggest hero—her dad. From playful outings at the playground to indulging in sweet treats, Rachelle’s day is filled with joy. However, as evening approaches, she begins to feel nervous about her upcoming ballet performance. With her father’s unwavering love and support, Rachelle must summon the courage to face her fears and step onto the stage for the first time in front of a large audience. The question lingers: Will Rachelle find the confidence to shine, or will her doubts hold her back?
This tender story is a touching portrayal of a father’s supportive role in his child’s life. I was particularly moved by how the father instinctively knew when to let Rachelle take charge and when to offer reassurance. The narrative seamlessly illustrates the powerful connection between love, support, and self-confidence. The gentle pacing of the story, coupled with Olivia Smith H.’s lovely illustrations, enhances the emotional depth of the tale. Each page is brought to life with soft, vibrant colors that add another layer of warmth and charm to the book.
A Father’s Love is as sweet as summer strawberries—a delightful read for all ages. The story’s message of love and support is perfectly conveyed, making it a comforting and uplifting choice. It’s a beautiful depiction of gentle parental guidance and familial love, leading to a conclusion that leaves the reader feeling cherished and embraced. This exceptional collaboration between author and illustrator has created a book that resonates deeply, and I eagerly look forward to more from this talented duo. Alicia Smith’s engaging tale makes a wonderful addition to a family library.

Laughter and Joy
Posted by Literary-Titan

Mr. Nap A. Lot’s Merry Christmas Adventure follows a man strolling through the streets observing the Christmas magic present in the families he sees. What was the inspiration for your story?
The inspiration for Mr. Nap A. Lot’s Merry Christmas Adventure comes from a long-standing saying in my home for over 20 years. It started with my husband, the real Mr. Nap A. Lot, and his way of explaining Christmas to our kids. His belief that “the spirit of Christmas lives in us all” has always touched me deeply. This heartfelt sentiment sparked the idea for the story, capturing the magic of Christmas through the eyes of a Mr. Nap A. Lot strolling through the streets and observing the joy in the families he sees.
Christmas is my favorite time of year, not for the gifts but for being with family and friends. What comes to mind when you think of Christmas Magic in your own life?
Christmas is my favorite time of year, and when I think of Christmas Magic in my life, I think of the love shared, the stories told, and the memories made. The air feels magical as we prepare for the Holiday Season. It’s truly a time to believe in something bigger than ourselves. I’ve always noticed how people come alive during this season, filling rooms with laughter and joy. There’s something about the lights, the evergreen smell, the fireplaces, the family togetherness, the freshly baked goods, and the sound of children laughing – all of these ingredients make Christmas so memorable for me.
What was your favorite scene in this story?
I have so many favorite scenes from beginning to end, but the one where he finds love and the magic of Christmas sets his spirit free is my absolute favorite. I also can’t help but cherish the moments where he witnesses kindness and selfless giving. Finding the true meaning of Christmas is another favorite scene, making it a tough choice. Every time I re-read the book, it feels like a toss-up between these wonderful moments.
I hope the Interesting Tales series continues in other books. If so, where will the story take readers?
Thank you! I hope the Interesting Tales series continues as well. I initially planned for six books in the series, so I’m thrilled it’s continuing to grow. This series is one of my favorites because it allowed me to have fun and not set boundaries. I want kids to gain a love for reading, and if one of my stories can do that, I’ve done my job. This series has given me so much joy and has allowed me to be a kid at heart. I have five new books already written, each covering new and funny events about families, animals, and another fun holiday. I’m continuously inspired to add to this series and take readers on delightful journeys. For an author, I think the best ingredient is inspiration, and that’s all I can ask for.
I can say that the Interesting Tales collection has three more books written and ready for release in 2025, all aimed at continuing the tradition of bringing imaginative and clever stories to young audiences.
