Evolution Ended weaves history, science, and pop culture to explore the biological, social, sexual, and political implications of a world that is changing faster than we can evolve. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Survival of the fittest evolution has always been the driving force behind the biological and social development of humanity. But this changed in the mid 20 thcentury when science began to “short-circuit” the process. You see, survival of the fittest no longer functions when modern medicine, technology, and social safety nets allow almost everyone to survive and reproduce.

For the first time in the history of man, our technology allows us to change our environment rather than having to adapt to it. This change is already bringing about incredibly profound changes in our society.

How did you develop the idea for this book and how did it change as you wrote?

In casual discussions with everyone from truck drivers to college professors, the conversation seemed to almost automatically turn to the same theme – the deterioration of our society. With mass shootings, drug addiction, epidemic obesity, domestic terrorism, and record suicide rates, it seemed like our society was forgetting how to survive. After considerable research, it appears that these are symptoms of the transition from a survival-of-the-fittest society to a society where our lives are totally supported by technology.

When I started the book, I approached it as a neutral observer. I didn’t know why society seemed to be degrading, and I honestly had no idea how it was going to end. However, the more research I did, the more it started to take on a life of its own and move toward its inexorable conclusion.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

This is a book full of important ideas. One of the most important is that evolution is more than just biology; it also applies to all of the systems that help humanity survive. These systems include social structures, governments, economies, technologies, infrastructures, and everything else we call civilization. In advanced civilizations, social, political, and technological evolution contribute at least as much to our survival as a species as biological evolution.

Another big idea is that technology has derailed the “survival of the fittest” evolution that made us the apex lifeform on the planet. Accordingly, survival strategies like large families, tribalism, and war are no longer suitable for success in today’s world. We are moving to a new model of human survival.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?

Survival of the fittest is a brutal process that works by culling “inferior” DNA by eliminating its hosts. Advanced technology has rendered these natural processes obsolete, but the jury is still out as to whether this will lead to massive societal dysfunction or a new golden age.
