Indie’s Next Chapter in Life

Kelly Ryner Author Interview

Indie Roo Is Now A Mother Too! is a heartwarming children’s book about family, safety, and growing up in the Australian wilderness. What inspired you to turn the real kangaroos visiting your backyard into characters in the Roo Series?

My mother read to me every night before bed until I was around seven. To this day, I can’t see a deer without thinking of Bambi, or a horse without thinking of Black Beauty. A mouse brings to mind Stuart Little, and yes, even spiders make me think of magnificent Charlotte of Charlotte’s Web. Those books instilled in me my earliest feelings of connection with wildlife.

Fifty years later, while wandering around our property in Australia with the two orphaned kangaroos I was raising (Max and Indie), I was saddened to have learned how little most people really know about these iconic Aussies. Watching them bounce at my heels, weaving through the bush and over rocks, I found myself thinking back to those stories that had touched me when I was a child.

I was now so privileged to have experienced first-hand their individually unique personalities, their love for one another, their almost human behavioural and emotional qualities.

It struck me that most people never get the chance to know kangaroos this way.

So, I began to wonder if I could do for kangaroos what those childhood books did for me.

How did Indie’s journey into motherhood shape the message you wanted young readers to take from this story?

Watching Indie raise Charlie confirmed that kangaroos are indeed sentient beings. The way they care for and raise their children is actually very similar to ours. My hope is that children will see themselves in Charlie and see their parents in Indie. That moment of pride that Indie feels at the end of the story is a universal feeling for every mother, and I want kids to know that too. By relating to Charlie, my hope is that empathy and curiosity for kangaroos and other wildlife will naturally follow.

But this story isn’t only about Charlie growing up; it’s also about Indie’s next chapter in life. She is a first-time mother, instinctively figuring it out. She wants to raise her boy to be confident, capable, and independent. So, my hope is that parents too will connect with this book while learning a bit about kangaroos.

Charlie’s separation from Indie is an important moment in the book. What did you hope children would learn from that scene?

Indie returned home almost every day after Charlie was born, sometimes spending just an hour or two napping on our patio or veranda, and sometimes most of the day. When Charlie was one year old, while Indie was sleeping, he went off into the bush exploring with Darcy, an 18-month-old kangaroo that was on soft release at my property.

I was there when Indie woke up and started panicking that Charlie had disappeared. I felt so helpless as she hopped around looking for him, returning to me over and over again hoping I could tell her where he went. Eventually, she came back to the bed where she had last been with him and she waited.

An hour later, Charlie came bouncing down the hill, looking so proud of himself. It was his first big excursion on his own. As soon as Indie could sense he was on his way home, she closed her eyes and pretended she was still sleeping and hadn’t been worried at all. It was the cutest thing. A few minutes later, she got up and showered him with kisses and cuddles.

I am fascinated with how many kangaroo behaviours are so similar to our own. When I was a young girl and we were out, my parents always said, “If we get separated for any reason, you come back to this very spot and I will do the same”. It worked. Having a plan gave me confidence as I was growing up, and provided my parents with a sense of security as well.

This section of the story also gave me the opportunity to introduce other wildlife of the area. While these books are lyrical in nature, they were crafted to be useful in school classrooms. The Red Rabbit Books website has a downloadable guide for both home and school educators to use along with behind the books stories, photos and videos of the real-life happenings that informed each page.

The watercolor illustrations capture so much beauty in the Australian landscape. How closely did you work with the illustrator to bring that world to life?

I am the illustrator as well as the author of the Red Rabbit Books Roo Series. The third book is scheduled for release around Easter 2027. When my husband and I relocated to NSW, Australia, in 2020, I obtained a license to care for local wildlife.

While raising orphaned eastern grey kangaroo joeys, I started adjusting my watercolour painting style to better suit the children’s books I now wanted to write. By then, I had already been raising funds for local wildlife sanctuaries as a wildlife conservation artist for a few years.

My thousands of videos and photographs of these glorious creatures have certainly come in handy.

Indie Roo Is Now A Mother Too!

Indie Roo Is Now A Mother Too! is a delightful addition to Kelly Ryner’s Roo Series, following Indie as she welcomes her joey, Charlie, into the world. Through an engaging and meaningful story, readers watch Charlie grow while learning important lessons from his mother about staying safe, recognizing danger, and developing the skills he needs to thrive. The story reminds young readers that listening to parents is important, especially when those lessons can help keep them safe in moments of danger.

One of the most memorable aspects of the book is learning that the story was inspired by real kangaroos that regularly visited Ryner’s backyard. Knowing that Indie and her family were based on true experiences gives the story a deeper sense of meaning and a warm personal touch. Children will especially appreciate the moment when Charlie becomes separated from his mother. Rather than panic, he remembers what Indie taught him. This scene beautifully reinforces the importance of listening to trusted adults and being prepared for unexpected situations.

The watercolor illustrations are absolutely stunning. Each page is filled with charming details, from birds and flowers to the natural beauty of the Australian landscape. The soft colors bring the animals to life and create a gentle, inviting atmosphere for young readers. The thoughtful artwork enhances the story and gives children plenty of small details to notice as they follow Indie and Charlie’s journey.

“little people in fur coats”

Kelly Ryner Author Interview

Maxi Roo Is Just Like You! follows a young kangaroo exploring the world around him who discovers friendship, adventure, and the joys of being a part of nature. What was the inspiration for your story?

In 2022, I took two orphaned kangaroo joeys into care. While watching them grow up I was soon referring to them as “little people in fur coats”.  I couldn’t get over how distinct their personalities were just like ours. I found their curiosity, love of play, communication styles, sincerity, love of me and each other all very human.  Maybe in part because they are standing up most of the time, the way we do and they use their hands, the way we do.  But to know a kangaroo is different from any other animal I have ever been in contact with. Unfortunately here in Australia, much of the population has never gotten to know how truly special these beautiful animals are.

While walking around my property with these two baby kangaroos following me around, showing off for each other, hopping off and then rushing back to me to hear me tell them how proud I was of them before running off again I wondered if maybe there was a way to educate young people about the specialness of kangaroos through a bedtime book.

I had recently turned my focus into becoming a Wildlife Conservation Artist, so an illustrated children’s book seemed to be a natural fit. Having now done book readings followed by kangaroo Q&A sessions in schools, I am delighted to see it all coming to fruition.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

I wanted to get the details right.

  • Yes, a young joey’s first solid food is DIRT! And even as adults, if their tummy is upset, they eat dirt.  The natural organisms in dirt establish their gut flora.
  • Joeys first best friend is their mother, then later they form a strong friendship with a buddy (especially the boys) but they are mob animals, they love to love and they hate being all alone.  So when a kangaroo looses its mother or its buddy this can be absolutely devastating.
  • They hate the wind, it’s more stressful than any other weather events.
  • And I wanted my illustrations to depict actual kangaroos, not an anthropomorphic cartoon.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

Max’s morning routine – he always loved a good stretch, belly scratch, a fart and a poo.  Totally true and I knew kids would relate to that.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

Yes it is the first book in a series.  I am currently working on Indie Roo Is a Mother Too! and plan to have that out before Christmas this year.

What does a curious child have in common with a cheeky Australian kangaroo? More than you might think. Meet Maxie Roo. He loves muddy puddles, needs a cozy midday nap, and sometimes tastes things he probably shouldn’t. But when Maxie and his cautious best friend Indie are startled by a fox, they must work together, retrace their steps through the bush, and find their way back to the safety of home. Winner of the Literary Titan Gold Book Award, Maxie Roo Is Just Like You! is a sweet and humorous rhyming picture book featuring classic hand-painted illustrations. Inspired by two real-life rescued orphaned joeys raised by author and illustrator Kelly Ryner, this heartwarming story invites readers to discover how much they share with one of Australia’s most iconic animals. Why Parents and Teachers Love It: Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Beautifully supports SEL by showing children that animals experience the same need for safe spaces and connection that they do. Australian Wildlife & Habitats: Introduces young readers to authentic animal behaviour and the vibrant ecosystems of the Australian bushland. Educational Back Matter: Includes factual “Did You Know?” pages exploring native species. Teacher-Approved Resources: Pairs with a comprehensive educator guide designed for cross-curricular use in the classroom.

Maxie Roo Is Just Like You!

Kelly Ryner’s Maxi Roo Is Just Like You! is a sweet and beautifully illustrated children’s book that follows a young kangaroo named Max as he hops through life, discovering friendship, adventure, and the joys of being a part of nature. Set in Red Rabbit Farm, the story paints an endearing picture of Max’s playful antics, from stretching and belly scratches to unexpected farting (which kids will love). Through simple yet engaging rhymes, the book highlights how Max’s experiences aren’t so different from our own, making a strong case for empathy toward wildlife.

One thing I really enjoyed about this book is how it balances fun and education. The story isn’t just about a cute kangaroo, it’s filled with little moments that teach kids about nature without them even realizing it. When Max watches birds and bugs or tastes a slug, it mirrors the curiosity children have about the world. The comparison between Max and the reader makes it feel personal. It’s a subtle way of reminding kids that animals, just like people, have emotions, friendships, and fears.

The writing is simple but clever, with a rhythm that makes it easy to read aloud. Some of the best moments come from the friendship between Max and Indie, another young kangaroo. Indie is cautious, while Max is bold, showing how different personalities complement each other. Their adventure, where they get lost but find their way back home, adds a touch of excitement without being too scary. The mention of a red fox chasing them brings in just enough tension to keep kids engaged, but the resolution of finding their mob in the sunset wraps things up in a warm, comforting way.

The book’s biggest strength, though, is its underlying message about wildlife conservation. It doesn’t feel preachy, but it encourages kids to think about how they can help animals. The final section gives clear, actionable steps like not buying kangaroo products or driving carefully in wildlife areas. The fact that part of the book’s profits go toward kangaroo rescue makes it even more meaningful. It’s a book with heart, not just in its story but in its purpose.

I’d recommend Maxi Roo Is Just Like You! for young animal lovers, curious kids, and parents who want a bedtime story with both charm and substance. It’s perfect for ages three to seven, but even older kids and adults can appreciate the warmth and message it carries. If you love books that mix adventure, humor, and a love for nature, this one is a must-read.
