The Canticle of Ibiza follows a man from the Upper East Side of Manhattan who leaves his life behind to find his long-long friend in Ibiza. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I’m from New York, and have seen some people caught up in their high level financial careers while deep down wanting to get out and search for meaning. But it is very difficult to leave as money and friends and power carry a strong grip. In The Canticle of Ibiza, the protagonist John actually does leave his life behind and heads to Ibiza to find his long lost friend, and in a sense, to find himself. This is a great dream of many, and they can live it in the novel. There was a lot of time spent crafting the character traits in this novel. What was the most important factor for you to get right in your characters?
Characters must ring true to the reader. If not, readers can sense that something is not right. So the most important thing for me is creating interesting and realistic characters. Then the readers feel like they really knows them, they connect with them, and they are much more vested in each and every scene.
What are some things that you find interesting about the human condition that you think make for great fiction?
The human is always longing for deeper meaning. They might not realize it, or it might be covered up for periods of life or due to our general busy lives, but deep down we all share that existential longing. I believe fiction that explores that longing resonates with everyone.
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
My next novel is an adventure set in Italy and New York, and should be available by next year!
Ibiza, Spain, 1988. Hedonistic villa parties, hidden Buddhist temples, lost marijuana farms, and outlandish artist communes. John encounters these and more on his quest to find his estranged friend Gunther. Along the way, he meets vibrant spiritual seekers, jaded hippies, and possible love—an international DJ named Diana Clarke. He also begins to discover mystical elements to Ibiza, and to life, he never expected to encounter. Will John find Gunther and start life anew, or will his oppressive past, and precarious present, destroy him on his quest for salvation and love?
