Fatal Infatuation: ALMOST HUMAN ~The First Trilogy~

Blending young-adult fiction with paranormal intrigue is a surefire recipe for success, especially when the story revolves around powerful vampires grappling with existential dilemmas. Fatal Infatuation, Book 1 in Melanie Nowak’s Almost Human trilogy, expertly weaves this concept, centering on the complicated relationship between Felicity, a college student, and Cain, a centuries-old vampire. Felicity never anticipated becoming the object of affection for both a charming human and a vampire. Now, she finds herself entangled in their emotions, trying to maintain balance as her own feelings and fears intensify.

The novel immerses readers in a cozy yet haunting atmosphere, drawing them into a world rich with Gothic allure. Set in a small college town, the location adds a sense of intimacy and mystery, ideal for those who appreciate a slow-burn romance wrapped in a paranormal twist. The relationship between Felicity and Cain evolves naturally, with emotional depth that builds gradually, keeping readers engaged. Cain’s internal struggles, paired with Felicity’s discovery of the supernatural, bring a humanizing element to the otherwise dark and otherworldly narrative.

For a vampire novel, I feel the action seems somewhat subdued. While the story excels at establishing a dark, almost comfortingly Gothic vibe, I believe it lacks the intense, high-stakes conflicts typical of the genre. It is worth noting that Fatal Infatuation departs from the common vampire tropes in a most delightful way. With a plot that is more character-driven than action-based, it a refreshing take on vampire lore.

Fatal Infatuation, the first in Nowak’s trilogy, delivers a captivating romantic tale with a Gothic edge, making it an enjoyable read for fans of atmospheric, character-driven stories. Focused more on relationships and existential dilemmas than intense action sequences, it remains a worthy addition to any paranormal romance collection and a novel I highly recommend to any fan of fantasy series.
