Subject to Interpretation

Alexandra Elinsky PhD Author Interview

Girl Glow: Titan of Transformation is a fierce, no-filter manifesto for women ready to reclaim their power, shed their masks, and step into unapologetic self-worth. What inspired you to abandon the traditional tone of self-help books and write something this fiery?

There is no rule book for writing or self-help. My motto as an author has always been “I just want to write something f*cking real.” People need real. They need honest. They need the truth, and I am not afraid to deliver it to them.

If Girl Glow were a conversation with your younger self, what’s the one truth you’d want her to believe?

  1. Do not accept every suggestion as truth. All stories are subject to interpretation.
  2. Being a hard-core BITCH is much better than being a “nice girl.” I was told to be nice, polite, and kind, and all it did was get me “walked all over.”
  3. No one is coming to save you – your savior exists inside of you right now.

What were some ideas that were important for you to explore in this book?

I am into spirituality and power, so I wrote a book combining both concepts.

The book feels like both a challenge and a celebration. How do you want women to feel when they finish the last page?

I do not want to impose my wishes on women. The content will impact them the way it will impact them without my direct influence.

I Was Playing Checkers While God Was Playing Chess: The Power and Presence of God in My Life

James Bass’s I Was Playing Checkers While God Was Playing Chess is a raw and vulnerable memoir that chronicles the author’s journey from deep childhood trauma to spiritual awakening and redemption. Drawing on vivid metaphors from the game of chess, Bass uses each chapter to map out pivotal “moves” in his life—moments of heartbreak, divine intervention, and personal growth. Through the lens of abuse, addiction, love, and faith, Bass tells the story of how God’s unseen hand was guiding his life’s trajectory, even when he could barely keep his own head above water.

Bass’s writing isn’t polished in the traditional sense—it’s honest. Honest like a wound still healing. There’s power in that. His voice jumps off the page, not like a preacher, but like a man who’s been through the worst and is just grateful to be alive. The early chapters, especially those about his Abuelita and the horrifying abuse he endured as a child, were painful to read. But that pain is the point. You can feel his desperation and confusion, and then—slowly—his transformation. The chess metaphor could’ve easily been gimmicky, but here it’s brilliant. It gives shape to his suffering and makes it feel like maybe all our worst days aren’t just random punches from life.

Where the book really shines, though, is in the sections about Crystal—his wife, his partner, his mirror. Their love is not a fairy tale. It’s messy, cracked, and sometimes brutal. But it’s also real. Bass’s depiction of being a caregiver to someone with a severe mental illness is unflinching and brave. He doesn’t sugarcoat it. And that’s why it works. His sacrifices don’t feel like grand gestures. They feel like daily choices to love someone no matter what. That kind of love—resilient, imperfect, relentless—feels holy. And when he finally connects his childhood reading struggles to his ability to advocate for Crystal later in life? It was powerful. You can’t make that stuff up.

This isn’t a book for people looking for tidy answers or happy endings wrapped in bows. But if you’ve ever asked God “why?”, if you’ve ever looked at your life and felt like nothing made sense, or if you’ve ever wondered whether your pain had a point—this book is for you. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to know the next move. You just have to trust that the board is in the hands of a Master. I’d recommend it to anyone navigating trauma, caregiving, broken family dynamics, or just plain soul exhaustion.

I Was Playing Checkers While God Was Playing Chess: The Power and Presence of God in My Life

I Was Playing Checkers While God Was Playing Chess is part memoir, part testimony, and all heart. It’s the story of a man who lived through a mountain of trauma. Abuse, racism, addiction, marital struggles, and found God moving in places he didn’t expect. Every chapter uses a chess move to explain a turning point in his life, like how his grandmother giving him an encyclopedia set as a boy set the stage for him to one day decode complex psychiatric info and care for his wife. It’s deeply personal, packed with emotion, and reads like someone sitting across the table, telling you their truth.

One chapter that really hit me was “The Fork” about his abuelita. She steps in during his horrible childhood, gives him love, and literally hands him books when no one else believed in him. That whole section had me teary-eyed. It reminded me how sometimes the smallest gestures change everything. And the way he ties it back later, like decades later, to how he understood medical texts to help his wife, was amazing. That’s not just a good story. That’s fate with a plan. I could feel how much those books meant to him. It wasn’t just about reading. It was about survival.

Then there’s Crystal. She’s not just his wife. She’s a whole force of nature. That part where she tells him, “I love you for the man you’re going to become,” after he’s cheated and blown up their marriage? I had to put the book down for a second. That line wrecked me. You feel the weight of what they’ve been through, but you also feel the hope. The love between them isn’t pretty or easy, but it’s real. The mental health stuff is raw, too. He talks about psychosis, ER visits, and disappearing acts. And yet there’s faith threaded through it all, like a lifeline.

Later on, when he talks about writing his first book and speaking publicly, it’s a total shift. That’s when you realize the guy who used to think he was worthless is now lifting other people up. There’s this full-circle moment when he reconnects with an old boss who turns out to be a pastor. The way it all lines up? It’s wild. It feels earned. I could see the gears turning in his life even when he couldn’t. That made me look at my own life differently. Like maybe all this chaos has some kind of pattern.

If you’ve ever felt like you were getting hit from all sides and couldn’t see the bigger picture, this book is for you. If you’ve ever loved someone who was hard to love, or were that person yourself, this book is for you. It’s not fancy or polished. But it’s real and full of heart.

Working to Create Balance

Ann Naimark Author Interview

Touch of Light: Opening to the Love That Is You and All Creation is a tale of personal evolution and an invitation to readers to explore their own spiritual pathways and connections. Why was this an important book for you to write?

My dad encouraged me to write the story of my life years ago. I couldn’t imagine why this would be helpful for people! Then a few years ago I felt an inner urging to do just that. I followed the urging of Source and only wrote when I could feel the inner impulse. I felt the energy of Light helping me in this process. Writing this book helped me reflect more deeply on my life. I integrated my past more fully. I felt the emotions I had experienced at the times I discussed. The book opened me more fully to myself and my connection with Source.

My sense of writing this book was also to encourage others to do life their way. We are all unique and that is our gift to the world.

I wanted to support people to listen to their inner voice and learn to trust it as the energy of Source Light giving them a nudge in a certain direction.

People often follow the crowd because it feels difficult to be different. And Source Light can support and be with them all the way, whatever they are drawn to.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

That you are unique and that is amazing; you are a gift.

That listening to your inner voice and learning to discern when it is coming from Source Light makes your life a lot easier.

That life can be an adventure full of joy, peace, and love.

That working to create balance physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually also makes our lives easier.

That you can live daily in connection with Source.

That finding ways to release mental, emotional, spiritual, physical blocks to being your true self leads to clarity, peace, and loving yourself.

How would you describe the Source to readers that are considering reading your book?

Source to me is that creative Pure Love energy from which we all emerged. Which created the universe(s). We could also call it Universal Light. When we exist as Pure Love, we emanate Light and affect those around us.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?

To pursue their passion. What makes their hearts sing? To do life their way by tuning into their inner song and uncover who they really are – a loving spark of Creation.

A Touch of Light, Opening to the Love that is You and All Creation

A Touch of Light is a spiritually enriching autobiography by Ann Naimark, chronicling her journey from atheism to a profound connection with the spiritual realm she identifies as “Source.” This is a tale of personal evolution and an invitation to readers to explore their own spiritual pathways and connections.

Naimark’s book is deeply personal and emotionally resonant. She deftly uses her life’s story as a canvas to explore broader themes of love, spirituality, and personal growth. Her writing style is engaging and is filled with vivid anecdotes that bring her experiences to life. For instance, she describes her epiphanies and challenges with such clarity that I often felt like I was walking alongside her and experiencing her shifts in understanding firsthand.

One of the most compelling aspects of the book is how Naimark intertwines everyday occurrences with spiritual insights. Her descriptions of meditative experiences are particularly striking. They offer a glimpse into a transcendent world that is both awe-inspiring and accessible. She makes spirituality relatable by grounding it in familiar experiences, from family relationships to encounters with nature, making the sublime feel within reach.

The book weaves between timelines and thoughts, mirroring the non-linear path of spiritual growth. The stream-of-consciousness style, while unique and reflective of her spiritual journey, might be challenging for readers who prefer a more structured narrative.

A Touch of Light is a heartfelt invitation to explore one’s spiritual dimensions. I recommend it to anyone on or curious about spiritual paths, particularly those interested in how spirituality can intersect with everyday life. Naimark’s story is a testament to the transformative power of opening oneself up to the spiritual, the mystical, and the often inexplicable threads that connect us all. Whether you’re a seeker, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, there’s something in Naimark’s journey that might just inspire a little more light in your own path.

Honest Reflections – For Everyday Life

Honest Reflections, by Traei Tsai, is a captivating collection of over 80 musings that blend the ordinary with the extraordinary. Through a series of concise reflections paired with evocative photographs, Tsai explores the nuances of everyday life and larger socio-political and cultural themes. This compact volume reads like an art-and-reflections journal, combining the introspective quality of a personal diary with the visual allure of a photo essay. Each piece invites readers to engage in a dance of text and image, with some entries juxtaposing the two elements provocatively, while others seamlessly integrate them.

Tsai’s writing, which sometimes adopts a poetry-like form, presents a complexity that often enriches the reading experience, offering depth and provoking thoughtful interpretation. The interplay between words and visuals is particularly striking in entries such as “Fear of Colors,” “Dandelion,” and “Rose Quartz,” where text and images not only flow together but also stand distinct, creating a multi-layered reading experience. Photographs like “Blow This” and “Everything is for Sale” powerfully enhance the accompanying reflections on themes like loss of agency and racism. These visual elements often communicate profound meanings, sometimes more effectively than the text itself. A notable highlight is the verse “What the Dog Saw Everyday,” a charming and natural piece that also serves as the cover’s artwork. Its sequel, “What the Real Dog Saw Everyday,” continues the exploration of themes like motherhood and reflection, creating a cohesive link between the two pieces through both photography and prose.

Honest Reflections – For Everyday Life stands out as a testament to the power of personal observation and artistic expression, offering a fresh lens through which to view the ordinary and the extraordinary. Its ability to provoke thought and inspire reflection makes Honest Reflections a compelling read for anyone interested in exploring the intersections of life, art, and social commentary. Through this intimate and visually engaging work, Tsai provides a meaningful journey into the everyday moments that shape our understanding of the world around us.
