Ghost (The Justice Chronicles) by Michael Jack Webb follows a young FBI profiler, Kate Justice, as she is assigned a case where she must track down an elusive serial killer. Kate is a woman who is constantly running from her past. As the case takes an unnatural turn, and Kate’s past catches up with her, things turn dangerous. With a smart killer on her trail, and everything she thought she knew thrown into questions, Kate may not survive this case.
Ghost (The Justice Chronicles Book 1) is a riveting crime novel that excels at creating intriguing characters, especially Kate Justice, and putting them in some hair raising situations. One thing that really stands out to me about this book is the atmosphere. Every scene is set in a well drawn location that is fully detailed. This adds to the tension of the novel as Michael Jack Webb’s writing style ensures that you’ll remain hooked even amid exposition.
Kate kind of reminds of Clarice Starling from The Silence of the Lambs. She intelligent and tough and good at what she does. While I’m making comparisons to Silence of the Lambs, I felt like the tone of the novel, and the authors vivid writing style, gave me the same eerie atmospheric feeling that the movie gave me. This novel takes a supernatural turn that takes into dark fantasy territory with entertaining results.
Author Michael Jack Webb certainly knows how to tell a tale. Ghost (The Justice Chronicles Book 1) will keep you guessing and entertained. I was not expecting the supernatural turn, crime novels often remain grounded, but the twist was pulled off to spectacular effect. Readers who enjoy police procedurals will also find plenty to enjoy as Michael Jack Webb often immerses you in the details, which keeps the book feeling authentic, even amongst paranormal activity.
