Literary Dopamine

Author Interview
Chicago Thomas Author Interview

Spit follows two U.S. Marshals who have been searching for a diabolical serial killer for the past decade. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I love answering this question because no one ever believes me when I tell this story. I was sitting on my couch petting my Golden Labrador, Mia, and an old A&E commercial came on. The ad was with a well-known magician named Cris Angel, advertising his magic show Mindfreak. There wasn’t anyone else in the room so I looked over at my dog and asked “Hey Mia, what do you think this guy would be like as a Serial Killer?” She seemed interested so I went down the rabbit hole from there.

What are some things that you find interesting about the human condition that you think make for great fiction?

With all of our technical advances, the human being is simplistic in its deduction of the world around us. That leaves the reaches of our imagination boundless and thirsty for new ways to entertain us. Every time we invite in an author’s thoughts or a Director’s vision, we create a room or another layer to our world.

This will ultimately make it bigger, sculpting it with the tools and gifts left behind in the invitation. Our reality connects us to survival. Fiction connects us to our dreams.

How do you balance story development with shocking plot twists? Or can they be the same thing?

When it comes to story development I like to be cautious with time and tempo. I want to give the audience a continual literary dopamine drop before I open the floodgates. As I’m writing, I make sure to keep myself as part of the audience routinely putting on my Maximus Decimus Meridian rendition: ‘Are you not entertained!’ If the answer is no, I’ll go for coffee and play with Mia.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

Spit is the first book in a three-part series. The next book in the series titled Your Last Prayer: The Man in Green is going to continue from where Spit left off. Throughout there will be storylines that will go into the team in pursuit of the killer and the team’s origin stories. Shrouded histories come into clarity as members begin to discover who they are.

They’ll be the uncovering of lies, betrayal, and deceit as the ultimate acts of courage are on full display. All while God’s team locks horns in a war over power and dominion. Your Last Prayer: The Man in Green is due out 10/26/26.

There will be many other works in between the production of YLP and I urge my readers to visit the website http://www.ctafamily.wordpress.com for the latest on my upcoming works and so much more.

I would like to see a storyline about this world through the eye of a child. “The possibilities of a greater planet”.
