My Journey As A Christian

D. L. Webster Author Interview

In Curing Christianity, you examine the ways evangelical Christianity can become healthier without losing its center in Jesus. What inspired you to write this book?

Through my journey as a Christian, I spent years wrestling how to best understand Christianity, the bible, and how we should live. Additionally, I’ve read or heard stories from numerous people regarding the challenging ideas and hurtful experiences they had with Christianity. I recognized that these things were unnecessary to Christianity. Christianity has a positive impact in numerous people’s lives, but other have also experienced harm. I believe I have gained insight into the challenges which aren’t clear to many Christians. I truly desire to illuminate these in order that Christians and the church as a whole can avoid the harmful ideas and unnecessary experiences which sometime accompany Christianity.

Fear is a recurring theme in the book, and you argue that many believers have been shaped more by fear than by love. What led you to that conclusion?

I have heard or read many passionate responses Christians have, especially to controversial topics. I’m fascinated in trying to understand why people have responded in the ways they do, and why they feel so strongly about certain topics. The best way I have been able to understand it is that people are often reacting in fear.

You write in a way that’s accessible to everyday readers rather than using highly academic language. Who did you most hope would pick up this book?

Thank you. I certainly intend Curing Christianity for “lay people”, the everyday Christian living their life and trying to incorporate their faith within it. I certainly hope that Christian leaders will engage with the book as well, and I believe that has significant value for them. I hope that it will help leaders to avoid some of the pitfalls others have fallen into before. That said, I didn’t write it exclusively for leaders, but for all Christians.

If readers finish Curing Christianity remembering one central message, what do you hope stays with them?

I feel that the third chapter, “Who Do You Say that I Am?” is the central core of the book. It’s about how we view God and our relationship to him. I think the most crucial concept is to understand God’s love.

Curing Christianity: Overcoming Doubt, Fear, and Confusion to Rediscover a Healthy Christian Faith

Curing Christianity, by D. L. Webster, is a sincere, direct, and deeply personal look at how evangelical Christianity can become healthier without losing its center in Jesus. Webster writes as someone who knows the church from the inside, not as a distant critic. He’s concerned with the beliefs and habits that leave people anxious, ashamed, confused, or spiritually worn down, and he frames the book as an attempt to help faith become more resilient. As he puts it, “God loves us and wants us to be spiritually healthy.”

The book moves through ten areas where Webster believes Christians often need a better lens, including fear, love, the character of God, spiritual abuse, truth, hell, purity culture, sexuality, and the way believers read the Bible. The chapters are grounded in Scripture, but the tone is more pastoral than academic. Webster explains ideas in plain language and often returns to the same central claim: Christianity is meant to form people into love, not fear.

One of the strongest aspects of the book is its emphasis on God’s love as active, steady, and freeing. Webster doesn’t treat love as a vague feeling or an excuse to ignore hard questions. Instead, he describes it as the foundation for how Christians understand God, themselves, and other people. His line, “God’s love acts for the good of the other even at cost to himself,” captures the heart of the book well.

Webster is also careful to connect theology with lived experience. When he writes about fear, purity culture, spiritual abuse, or biblical interpretation, he’s interested in how ideas land in real people’s lives. That makes the book feel practical. It’s not just asking readers to change their opinions but to notice what kind of fruit their beliefs are producing. The result is a book that feels like a long, honest conversation with someone who wants the church to heal because he still cares about it.

Curing Christianity is best understood as a call toward a more secure, compassionate, and emotionally healthy faith. Webster’s writing is accessible and earnest, and his message is especially meaningful for readers who have wrestled with fear-based religion while still wanting to hold onto Jesus. By the end, the book’s goal is clear: to help Christians live with less anxiety, more grace, and a stronger sense of God’s love.
