Driven By Passion

Chris Neo Author Interview

Assassin’s Love follows an unhappy wife who hires a Romani assassin to kill her wealthy husband, only for deception, dangerous attraction, and unexpected loyalties to complicate the deadly plan. Where did the idea behind this story come from?

I often wake up with a story in my head, and I’m never quite sure whether I was dreaming or already thinking. Over the years I learned to write these ideas down straight away as a short synopsis, so I don’t lose them, and the next day I expand them into a couple of pages. I now have 86 of them saved. When I was preparing to publish The Love Secret Series, I wanted to offer readers something extra, a short story they could enjoy while getting to know my writing. So I went through my collection, and one idea stood out: an unhappy wife, a deadly plan, and an assassin who falls for the man she was sent to kill. I named it Assassin’s Love and deliberately kept it to a novella. I wrote it part-time, night after night, over about two weeks, writing and rewriting until it was finished.

How did the compact length of the book influence your approach to pacing and characterization?

The novella form forced me to be disciplined. My Love Secret trilogy spans continents and hundreds of pages, but here every chapter had to earn its place and push the story forward. I let the characters reveal themselves mainly through dialogue and action rather than long explanations: what they say, what they hide and what they choose to do under pressure. With a small cast in a confined world, each relationship carries more weight, and the tension builds quickly. I wanted readers to finish it in one or two sittings, the way you watch a good film, and still feel they knew these people well.

How did you develop Rafaella’s professional identity as an assassin?

I wanted Rafaella to be a professional first: disciplined, loyal to her clan and its code, and very good at what she does. That made her more interesting to me, because the story then tests something she believes is unbreakable. Her training gives her control, but love takes that control away. Psychologically, I was drawn to the conflict between identity and emotion: who are we when the role we have built our life around no longer fits the person we are becoming? Rafaella has to decide what she values more, the code that made her or the feelings that are changing her.

What do you hope readers take away from the contrast between Valentino and Rafaella and Heleanne and Alexi?

Both couples are driven by passion, but they show two very different kinds of love. Heleanne and Alexi are bound by desire, greed and fantasy; their attraction is about what each can gain. Valentino and Rafaella discover something deeper, a love that shows itself through loyalty, protection and sacrifice. This is the same theme that runs through all my books: real love is not proved by words or desire, but by what we are willing to give up for another person. I hope readers enjoy the twists and the suspense, and then perhaps ask themselves which kind of love they recognize in their own lives.

Passion. Betrayal. Murder. Nothing is ever quite what it seems.

Heleanne appears to have everything: a wealthy husband, a life of privilege and an enviable future. But beneath the surface lies a dangerous ambition, and a plan from which there can be no return.

Determined to reshape her destiny, she enters the hidden world of professional assassins, where deception is an art, trust is an illusion and no one can foresee the consequences of a single decision.

But when a young assassin is sent into the house disguised as a maid, she finds herself falling for the very man she was hired to kill. As loyalties shift and plans unravel, love and betrayal become impossible to separate, and the heart may prove the most dangerous weapon of all.

Fast-paced, suspenseful and psychologically compelling, Assassin’s Love is a gripping novella that will keep you guessing until the final page. A Literary Titan Silver Book Award winner and a standalone romantic thriller from Chris Neo, author of the award-winning Love Secret Series.

Assassin’s Love

Assassin’s Love, by Chris Neo, is a compact romantic thriller built around desire, deception, and a murder contract that becomes unexpectedly personal. Wealthy Valentino and his dissatisfied wife, Heleanne, encounter a family of Romani merchants who trade in suggestively named products and far deadlier services. After Heleanne begins an affair with Alexi and hires his clan to kill her husband, assassin Rafaella enters Valentino’s home disguised as a maid. The setup has the heightened energy of a stage melodrama, with a small cast, dangerous attractions, and motives that become clearer through confrontational dialogue. Neo moves through the story briskly, giving each chapter a specific dramatic purpose.

The book’s most interesting relationship is the one between Valentino and Rafaella. She arrives prepared to seduce and poison him, but their attraction unsettles her professional discipline and forces her to decide what she values more than the assassins’ code. Valentino is equally intriguing because his genial manners and domestic habits conceal a mysterious past. Their romance is sensual, earnest, and deliberately tied to the novel’s central idea that genuine love reveals itself through sacrifice. Heleanne and Alexi provide a darker reflection of that idea. Their passion grows out of greed and fantasy, while Valentino and Rafaella gradually demonstrate loyalty through action. That contrast gives the story a clear moral shape without slowing down its plotting.

Neo’s dialogue-led approach makes the book feel immediate and theatrical. Characters flirt, bargain, threaten, and confess with very little narrative distance, so readers are rarely left waiting for the next confrontation. The recurring pancakes, pink juice, dogs, poison, and yellow swallow tattoo work as playful clues that later become important to the resolution. The erotic scenes occupy a substantial portion of the book and establish the emotional turning point in Rafaella’s mission, though their length and repetition may be more detail than some thriller readers expect. The broad characterizations and extravagant coincidences suit the story’s playful, fable-like atmosphere, especially during the final fight and the revelation of Valentino’s connection to Baba.

Readers familiar with James Patterson will recognize the short chapters, direct prose, and steady supply of hooks, but Neo gives the formula a more intimate and romantic focus. Patterson often expands suspense through multiple locations and intersecting investigations, while Assassin’s Love concentrates its tension inside one troubled marriage and one secretive clan. The result is closer to a dark romantic folktale told with the momentum of a commercial thriller. Its pleasures come from watching seduction turn into devotion and from seeing every early joke about assassins acquire a literal meaning. For readers who enjoy heightened romance, explicit sensuality, and twists delivered with a wink, this is a lively and memorable short read.
