Valentino’s Adventure in Puerto Rico

Valentino’s Adventure in Puerto Rico is a delightful tale that captures the heart and imagination of young readers. At its center is Valentino, an adventurous service dog who journeys to the vibrant island of Puerto Rico with his owner, Wanda. The story bursts with life as Valentino explores colorful streets, samples rich local cuisine, and immerses himself in the lively rhythm of the island.

From savoring traditional dishes to learning how to dance, Valentino throws himself into every experience with wide-eyed curiosity. Along the way, he meets new friends, Maelo and Tito, who guide him through Puerto Rico’s culture and history. Through their adventures, Valentino also discovers the importance of caring for the environment and, above all, the unifying power of friendship across cultures and backgrounds.

Author Wanda Reyes crafts a heartwarming, energetic story that’s both educational and entertaining. Young readers will be charmed by Valentino’s enthusiastic spirit; he’s not just a character, he’s a role model for open-minded exploration. I especially loved his willingness to embrace new experiences, from food to dancing, all while learning something meaningful about Puerto Rican heritage.

One of the most memorable moments comes when Valentino bonds with his new companions, a touching reminder of how connection transcends differences. The illustrations are vibrant and engaging, sparking opportunities for parents and children to discuss the story and its themes together. Valentino’s sneakers are an absolute highlight, adding just the right touch of whimsy and personality.

A bonus feature awaits at the end: a “Meet the Author” section that reveals the real-life inspiration behind the story. Knowing that Valentino and Wanda truly exist adds an extra layer of warmth and authenticity.

Valentino’s Adventure in Puerto Rico is a joy. I adored every page and can’t wait to follow Valentino on his next adventure.

Let’s Work Smarter

In Let’s Work Smarter, by Katharine Mitropoulos, the delightful setting of Harmony Lane comes alive as a group of industrious animals gather at the farmer’s market. Each animal sells their goods to raise funds for renovating their worn-down playground. Mole’s delicious apple pies fill the air with a sweet aroma, Bunny offers fresh, crisp carrots, and Mouse’s stand features a variety of tiny treats, each vendor contributing to the collective goal. As the day comes to a close, the town meeting brings thrilling news from Mayor Zebra: the fundraising goal has been achieved, and playground renovations can commence immediately. The animals are ecstatic, eager to start their much-anticipated project. Plans include planting a vibrant flower garden, painting the fence, and adding new toys to the sandbox. However, they soon realize the task is more daunting than expected. Despite their hard work, progress is slow and challenging.

Mouse suggests a different approach, proposing, “Instead of working harder, let’s try working smarter.” This sparks a collaborative effort where the animals brainstorm innovative solutions to streamline their work and complete their projects more efficiently. The narrative leaves readers wondering if Mouse’s advice will lead them to success in revitalizing their playground.

I found this story utterly charming. It beautifully illustrates the power of community and teamwork, showing young readers that by working together towards a common goal, great things can be accomplished. The diverse roles the animals take on offer relatable examples for children, reinforcing the message that everyone has something valuable to contribute. The story also serves as an excellent model for inspiring children to become active, responsible citizens in their communities. The animals’ dedication to improving their playground encourages young readers to think about ways they can participate in community service and collective efforts.

Laura Watson’s illustrations are a vibrant and delightful complement to the narrative. Her colorful, whimsical artwork captures the essence of each animal character, making the book visually engaging for both children and adults. Watson’s talent extends beyond children’s books; she also creates charming textiles, stationery, toys, and puzzles, adding an interesting layer to her creative profile.

Let’s Work Smarter is a thoroughly enjoyable read that imparts valuable lessons on citizenship, teamwork, and problem-solving. It’s a wonderful addition to any child’s library, destined to be read and cherished repeatedly.

Flexibility, Service, and Gratitude.

Katharine Mitropoulos Author Interview

Ready… Set… Frog! follows a helpful young frog who wants to train for the big obstacle course race but keeps getting sidetracked helping his friends. What was the inspiration for your story?

In addition to my role at Set Sail Press, I also run my family’s small woodworking business, CycleFrog Products, which specializes in creating accessories for Peloton bikes. While brainstorming new products to add to our collection, we considered rebranding the business name. Ready Set Frog was one of the ideas that emerged, and it sparked my imagination. I immediately thought of a story about a young frog who faces constant interruptions while trying to accomplish something.

From that initial idea, the book Ready… Set… Frog! took shape. I dove into writing and crafting the story, enlisting the editing expertise of Brooke Vitale. And now, here we are! I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share this story with children and families everywhere.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Laura Watson?

Collaborating with Laura Watson was a true highlight of bringing Ready… Set… Frog! to life. After completing the manuscript, I brought my art notes to Laura, and we worked closely together to develop character concepts, color palettes, and scene layouts. We were able to bounce ideas off one another, and through our collaboration, we created a book that we’re both incredibly proud of. The positive reception from readers has been especially rewarding, and we’re both grateful for the opportunity to work together on this project.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Ready… Set… Frog! is a story with three core themes: flexibility, service, and gratitude.

Flexibility — Frog is repeatedly interrupted when he’s trying to practice. He learns how to be patient and adapt to a changing situation rather than getting stuck in frustration.

Service — Frog needs to choose between helping his friends and completing his own tasks. Frog learns that he feels good inside when he lends a hand to someone in need—and that sometimes things work out on their own.

Gratitude — When it’s time for Frog’s big race, he tries his best and earns second place. Instead of feeling disappointed, Frog is proud of himself and excited to try again next year.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I’m currently in the early stages of drafting ideas for my next picture book about Frog and his friends. I’m excited to share more details with you in the coming months, so stay tuned! Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement!

Frog needs to practice if he wants to win the town obstacle race. But every time he tries, he gets interrupted!

Frog can’t help his friends and still make time to practice… or can he?

Join Frog as he navigates the balancing act of making time for yourself when others need your attention. With the support of Frog’s family and friends, he works through three tricky situations and learns that sometimes, through helping others, you end up helping yourself.

Ready… Set… Frog!

Frogathan Spots, or just Frog, lives on Harmony Lane. He is sitting at dinner one night, and his mom tells him that their neighborhood is going to host an obstacle course. Now Frog is beyond excited about this; he loves any and all challenges. He sets off to start training right away because he wants to win the race. Unfortunately, just as he is about to begin practicing his high jump, his neighbor Mole desperately needs his help! Frog being the good friend that he is, agrees to help. This situation continues to happen each time Frog gets ready to practice; someone always ends up needing his help. Will Frog ever get to practice for the big obstacle course race?

Ready… Set… Frog! written by Katharine Mitropoulos and illustrated by Laura Watson, is a fun-filled children’s book about a loveable frog and his struggles between being a good friend and taking time for himself. Frog has a wonderful attitude and shows his genuine desire to help those around him, but he also realizes that in doing so, he is always putting himself last and preventing himself from doing the things he wants to do. This picture book shares the message that it is ok to sometimes say no, or not right now. Teaching children, it is ok to set up boundaries with friends is essential. Their goals and dreams are just as important as helping others and desire to take priority at times.

Teachers and families will have much to talk about after reading the children’s story, Ready… Set… Frog! The important messages of self-care and a positive attitude will help children grow and learn how to manage their own feelings when things get stressful. This book will make a valuable addition to a home or classroom library.

The Problem with Poppy (The Sumatran Trilogy)

The Problem with Poppy (The Sumatran Trilogy) by [Emma Sandford, Olena Osadcha]

It is hard being a porcupine. Poppy is a young porcupine that scares easily due to being mistreated in the past. Now when someone new approaches her she sticks out her quills, stomping her feet, and hissing at them. It makes it very hard to find new friends, and Poppy is very lonely because of this. One day a young tiger tried to make friends with Poppy and she scared him away, instantly feeling bad. Today was going to be different though, today Poppy was going to go find the little tiger and apologize. After finding the young tiger disaster strikes and Poppy must overcome her fears to save her new friend.

I found the development of Poppy’s character appealing. A timid little porcupine that reacts with fear to all new interactions, turns into a character that is strong and loyal. Poppy will be relatable to young children that are often afraid of new people and situations. Poppy shows them that it is okay to be afraid while still doing new things.

When looking for a children’s book that has a meaningful message, captivating illustrations, and a unique story line look no further. Emma Sandford’s picture book The Problem with Poppy hits all the right marks for children and the young at heart. The reading level is ideal for kindergarteners and those that are on an early elementary reading level.
