Love and Innocence

Author Interview
Jack Quill Author Interview

Lost in Wonderland follows a woman with memory loss after being in a car accident who has to rediscover who she is and get to know her husband, of whom she has no memory. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I came up with the idea of Lost in Wonderland back in 2010 during my junior year of high school. My English teacher told us to write a one-page story for homework using a single run-on sentence that was grammatically correct. I remember laying on my bed and staring up at the ceiling as I struggled to think of something–anything! I knew that we would have to present our work either in front of the class or at the very least, our table groups. The idea of presenting my work always terrified me because it was like a reflection of me. Then the thought struck me: What would it be like to wake up and not know who you were? As I was lying there, I was imagining what it would be like waking up in a hospital bed, not knowing who I was, and viewing the people around me as strangers. With that image in my head, I took to writing my assignment… After it was graded and I received it back, I reworked it, and it eventually became the first chapter of my novel.

There is a sense of love and innocence throughout the novel. How were you able to capture those feelings and put them into words?

While I was outlining the story, I reread my copies of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Peter Pan, taking notes and circling my favorite passages and quotes. I think having those books fresh in my mind as I outlined my first draft helped establish those feelings of love and innocence.

Did you plan the tone and direction of the novel before writing, or did it come out organically as you were writing?

I knew the direction the story would go almost from the get-go, but I had not thought about the tone when planning. After I created the outline, I just started writing and the tone came out as I was writing. It was very natural.

What is the next book that you’re working on, and when can your fans expect it out?

I am currently working on a few different projects, so I am hoping to get one of them published by 2025. So, keep your eyes peeled!

Her memories were lost…
Lost. Like Alice in Wonderland.
Why should that analogy come to her mind? She had no clue.
The car accident had evidently taken its toll:
A shattered mind for her…
…and a broken heart for him.
Jack knew it was only too true. His wife’s love for him was gone. Their unborn child, no more. Vanished were the memories of their shared past.
Could Alareese start life anew with the firefighter husband she doesn’t remember? And, would Jack be able to get his “lovely librarian” to fall in love with him again?
You’ll enjoy this romantic tale with elements of Alice in Wonderland woven into it.
Now dive into the rabbit hole and fall in love with Jack and Alareese’s story.

Lost in Wonderland

Lost in Wonderland presents an emotional narrative revolving around Jack and his wife, Alareese, whose recent accident has resulted in a significant memory loss, leaving her unable to recognize her husband of three years. This poignant situation sets the stage for a story deeply rooted in love and resilience. Jack, depicted as a steadfast and caring husband, embarks on a journey to assist Alareese in her recovery, navigating the complexities of reestablishing their connection. His unwavering devotion is commendable, particularly as he grapples with the personal loss of both his wife’s affection and their unborn child due to the accident.

Alareese’s perspective adds a compelling layer to the story, especially as she struggles to reconcile her current life with her last recollections from five years prior. The author skillfully integrates “Alice in Wonderland” elements into the plot, providing a unique and engaging twist that resonates with Alareese’s disorientation and search for identity. The character development, particularly with the limited cast, is noteworthy. Jack’s dual role as a devoted partner and a diligent firefighter enriches the narrative, offering insights into his character beyond the domestic sphere. The portrayal of their life, including Jack’s professional endeavors, is engaging and adds a realistic dimension to the story. While the plot is straightforward and unfolds gently, some readers might yearn for additional dramatic elements and action. The infusion of humor throughout the story offers a delightful balance to the more somber themes.

Lost in Wonderland is a touching exploration of enduring love and the challenges of rediscovering oneself and one’s relationships after a traumatic event. Readers who enjoy romance fiction with a blend of emotional depth and light-hearted moments will enjoy curling up with this novel.
