Celebrate Your Value

Three Second World is a combination of a guidebook and a roadmap for women on how to build a plan for obtaining executive leadership roles in their careers. What inspired you to write this book?
What inspired me to write the book derived from many years of coaching women, whether they were executives, entrepreneurs, academicians, students, etc., some of whom were at the beginning of embarking upon their careers, others in the middle stages of their careers and evaluating their next steps and those closer to retirement seeking to go in a completely different direction. One thing they all had in common was their sheer ambition, determination, and grit, but they lacked a belief in their abilities, uniqueness, and the roadmap to success.
From general engagements with people, folks always asked how I could seemingly accomplish so much. I communicated the same information repeatedly and thought it would be a great idea to synthesize it, making the exact details available to everyone in a book format.
What do you feel is one of the biggest obstacles for women in obtaining executive leadership roles today, and how can they mitigate this?
That’s a big question to unpack. It has different meanings for different women. Some women were exposed to positive reinforcements their entire lives. These aren’t the women who suffer from Imposter Syndrome. Systemic, communication, or strategy obstacles may impede them from moving to an executive leadership role. Other women may have experienced implicit bias or were constantly told either through actions or words that perhaps they weren’t good enough. These negative experiences can wreak havoc on your confidence while forming mental models of being inadequate or lacking in some way. Understandably, there are systemic challenges that are limiting for women as well. Still, I focus on how women can strive today while, as a collective, we make improvements for the future.
What experience in your life has had the biggest impact on your career, leading you to write this book?
My Mother is the guiding light in my life and has always been my biggest supporter and cheerleader.
I’ve been a woman who has experienced systemic obstacles, roadblocks, and glass ceilings. It’s daunting when you work hard and are not necessarily rewarded at the same pace or with equitable rewards as others. I speak to women from a relational standpoint because I have experienced many of the challenges they are facing. It equipped me to assist them in navigating the terrain so that they realize their values system, leading them to determine their appropriate next step.
What is one thing that you hope women take away from Three Second World?
There are many layers to all of us. We often idolize those we see in the public’s eye without fully understanding their story or how they became successful. We tend to forget that most citizens come from humble beginnings, but what makes them different is they had a vision and were both tenacious and strategic. We are all one-of-a-kind treasures uniquely packaged. You must celebrate your value and know that there isn’t another person on the planet like you.
