Fatal Pose

Fatal Pose by [Barna William Donovan]

I will always go out of my way to read a murder mystery book and Barna William Donovan did not disappoint. Fatal Pose by Barna William Donovan is about a private investigator who re enters into the body building world in attempts to unveil the secrets of a hated, yet very much murdered, body builder.

The idea of these two worlds colliding makes for an interesting read that held my attention throughout. Gunnar and Laura are the main characters and are uniquely intriguing but all of the characters have deep and thought-provoking backgrounds as well. All of this provides a varied cast of characters that color this this mystery novel with their unique quirks and personalities.

Author Barna William Donovan does not use the cut and dry hero versus villain aspect, instead there is almost a vigilante component to the book which adds an extra layer of depth to this riveting crime fiction story. I like how, as a reader, you do not have to try and figure out who committed the murder, but instead we navigate how each character interprets the events that are happening. This is a different angle on the murder mystery genre that I found to be engaging. Personally, I like how there is a psychological undertone throughout the book. The book also dives into some of the stigmas in the body building world among several other relevant issues. Overall I really enjoyed the body building backdrop to this story because it felt exotic, to me at least because I do not experience with any of it.

I enjoyed the story, but it could be slow moving at times, creating a story that develops methodically, keeping readers interested by the suspense of waiting for the twists and turns. Fatal Pose is a compelling crime thriller that I would highly recommend, especially because it brings several worlds together resulting in a book that is unlike any other that I have read.
