We Fear What We Can’t Explain
Mitten Discovers His Shadow follows a curious kitten on his first adventure out of the barn, who discovers his own shadow and thinks it is a monster. Did the story begin with the science concept or with Mitten as a character?
The concept for Mitten Discovers His Shadow came first, and the character showed up right after. I was driving home from work one evening and noticed my car’s shadow keeping pace beside me. I thought, what an interesting thing to explain to a child. At the time, my son was two years old, and we had cats at home. So, I had my audience and my main character living in the same house. Telling the story from a kitten’s point of view gave me the right eye level—down where the shadow is enormous, and the world hasn’t been explained yet.
Why was it important for Mitten to move from fear to curiosity rather than simply be told there was nothing to worry about?
Being told there’s nothing to worry about almost never works—for children or adults. We often fear what we can’t explain, or don’t understand, and reassurance doesn’t explain anything. Mitten’s mother doesn’t solve his “monster kitten” problem for him; she gives him a way to think about it. She calls his shadow his “sun picture,” and then he has to test that answer for himself. Cats are curious and like to investigate, so Mitten’s reactions to his shadow are natural responses. I wanted the relief at the end of the story to be something Mitten earned rather than something he was handed
Young children often become frightened by things adults consider ordinary. Why was it important to treat Mitten’s fear seriously rather than laugh at it?
A fear that gets laughed at doesn’t go away; it just gets buried deep down. When that happens, a child learns not to mention the next one to avoid being made fun of again. To young children, a dark shape that copies your every move and doesn’t leave when you try to get away from it is a perfectly reasonable thing to be afraid of. If the story had treated Mitten’s fear as silly, the comfort at the end wouldn’t have been worth anything. I wanted children to see that being scared of something is an okay place to start—it’s just not where you have to stop.
Do you imagine Mitten having more barnyard adventures?
Yes, absolutely! Mitten Discovers Snow is in development now, with Mitten Discovers Rain to follow. The pattern I’m building on is one small mystery per book—something ordinary that’s brand new to a young child—and a barnyard full of animals that have their own opinions about it. Mitten has a lot left to discover, and I don’t think he’s going to leave any of it alone.

Helping Children Be Better Humans
Moonbeam’s Halloween Wish follows a lonely stray cat looking for a family who crosses paths with a girl dressed as a black cat, instantly forming a connection, and hoping that she has found her forever home. What was the inspiration for your story?
I wanted to write a Halloween story that wasn’t scary, and since I have an adopted cat, the idea of incorporating the concept of adoption was appealing to me.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
All of my books include lessons to help children be better humans, and in this book, I combined adoption and caring for those who are lonely as the primary concepts.
The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Taylor Johnston?
Taylor is an extremely talented artist and a close coworker. She is also a cat owner and works daily with kids, as I do, so her understanding of the concepts I wanted to portray was seamless. Taylor is also a highly creative individual and brought fresh ideas to her illustrations that I hadn’t thought of. We started with ideas that I had in mind, and after a few tweaks, the book was finished. We collaborated very well.
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
I am currently working on a book about a Tulip. It is targeted for ages 6-8, and the theme will be attractive to towns that present tulip festivals.

Kloe’s New Start follows a young cat excited for her first day at a new school who becomes caught up in her troublemaking brother’s drama. Where did the idea for this story come from?
The idea for the story came from my personal difficulties of going to the same school at the same time as my older sibling who has mental health issues. He was supposed to have graduated a year prior to my starting this high school but was held back. It created a lot of personal and emotional circumstances that were very hard to deal with as a high school freshman. A new school with new people – I was so hopeful that I would blend in and stand on my own two feet but that wasn’t the case. As in the story, it was found out fairly quickly that we were related.
Which scene did you have the most fun writing?
The last chapter. It was fun to write because although it was one of the most difficult high school years of my life, it was also a great way to internally come to terms – as much as one can at 14 – with who I was wihtin myself. It was an awakening to realize that it really is ok to be different from everyone else. That you bring your own personality and talents to those who really matter in your life – your true freinds and family.
Is there anything from your own childhood included in the characters in this story?
Yes, alot was taken from my own personal story. I wanted to let others who may be struggling with their own anxieties about who they are or where they came from understand that things will turn out well in the end through persistence. We are not alone. We should and need to be true to ourselves – always. This will lead to the best outcome for our future selves.
Can young readers look forward to more books featuring Kloe? What are you currently working on?
They definitaly can! Book 2 is in the works that will go a little deeper with what Kloe had to deal with within her own family as she grew up with mental illness setting a tone in her home. I’ll be creating more stories that will hopefully come out shortly that offer other anecdotes of life within Kloe’s World.

Acknowledge Those Who Matter
Everyday Heroes: Real People, True Heroes follows a teacher and her class who are learning about and celebrating the everyday heroes in their lives that inspire them. The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Arsalan Khan?
My dad and I began working with Arsalan in the summer of 2021. He’s become our preferred illustrator for all our projects since that time. We consistently choose him and recommend him to others because of his amazing ability to bring words to life through his illustrations. His patience while we refine our stories and request revisions is exceptional. Additionally, he has corrected errors in illustrations from other illustrators that we worked with prior to meeting him at minimal cost.
I collaborated with children at Casa Esperanza Montessori to create the manuscript for Everyday Heroes. My dad contacted Arsalan to see if he could illustrate the book while I continued to work on the manuscript. Arsalan agreed to fit it into his schedule. We provided him with the manuscript, specifying the characters’ makeup, and left the rest to his creative vision. He returned with a storyboard featuring all the characters, which we reviewed and approved after a few iterations. As always, Arsalan exceeded our expectations in both creativity and timeliness. We not only paid for his work but also gave him a generous tip for exceeding our expectations.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
I wanted to express that my dad has been my personal hero throughout my childhood and teenage years. Additionally, I wanted to emphasize that a hero doesn’t have to be a parent or someone who wears a cape. A hero is anyone who cares for you or holds significance in your life. My message to the children reading Everyday Heroes is to appreciate and acknowledge those who matter while they are still around. Also, take note of as many lessons as they try to teach you along the way while you can.
What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?
I’m currently working on a poetry book that explores my journey from childhood to adulthood, reflecting on love, life, and personal struggles. I plan to release this book after graduating high school next summer, with the anticipated release date set for June 9, 2025.
