Inspiring Children

Rosalind Severin McClean Author Interview

Oceans of Thoughts Book Four: The Little Pianist follows several children who get together for a playdate, which becomes an adventure in learning and fun. What was the inspiration for your story?

I have been a pianist from childhood and have lived in a music family environment. I have seen different cultures embrace music in their own way, and how they relate to their baby’s attraction to the piano or any other musical instrument. Some mothers encourage the attraction of their children from a very young age, and others hesitate and pull them away from the piano keys, disturbing their flow of their frequency in music within their being. Oceans of Thoughts is an inspirational poetry book series and Book Four falls nowhere short of that inspiration. The Little Pianist is written with a burst of passion and meant to inspire the children, expand their creativity, excite their curiosity, and their science and observation skills.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

I wanted to include much of music learning and interest the children in music theory and math skills. My goal was to educate the children along those lines and to show them that interactive learning with educational toys can be exciting and interesting and much fun.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Ali Raza?

Ali Raza is a brilliant illustrator. When I hired him, I told him that I wanted to take this project slowly. I wanted him to understand and to realize the mission on Oceans of Thoughts. It was difficult at first as the interest is to get the work done quickly, but I was not interested in that pace. I was not in a rush. I was interested in a slower pace and getting detailed work with those illustrations. And we persevered and did it . It took a lot more time than usual, but we had a triumphant finish. With patience comes excellence.

I hope the series continues in other books. If so, where will the story take readers?

Oceans of Thoughts is an inspirational poetry book series. Occeans of Thoughts Book Four was written after much interest from educators, teachers and parents for a book for the children. I only write from life experiences and so ‘The Little Pianist’ was written and published. The children’s passion is sure to continue. Look out for other books for children in the series.

Even Sheba, the family’s spirited Golden Retriever, along with their two lively cats, Ginger and Tibby, joined in the playful chaos.

What sets this story apart is the palpable sense of creativity that flows through every page. The joy of discovery radiates from the children as they read, explore, and, most notably, gather around the piano, a central element in the story, as Mrs. Collins is a piano teacher. One particularly delightful moment is Sheba’s playful interaction with the piano, tapping the keys with her paws, an image that’s both charming and memorable.

It’s a gentle reminder that the earlier children engage with these enriching experiences, the more natural and enjoyable learning becomes.

A thoughtful touch at the end of the story is the inclusion of “Interactive Questions For A Child’s Creative Thoughts.” This section features eleven questions designed to reinforce comprehension and engagement, asking readers to recall details such as the book’s title, the names of the visitors, and even the pets. It’s a wonderful way to deepen the reader’s connection to the story while strengthening critical thinking skills.

Dinosaur Symphony: A Book of Poetry and Pictures about Dinosaurs and Classical Music

In A Dinosaur Symphony, author S.P. Somtow masterfully intertwines the realms of time travel, music, and paleontology, creating a unique and engaging experience for young readers. This imaginative tale follows a time-traveling conductor who ventures into the Jurassic Era only to find an orchestra of dinosaurs struggling with their musical tempo. Through this narrative, Somtow cleverly introduces children to the intricacies of a symphony orchestra, with each dinosaur character representing a different musical instrument and section of the orchestra.

The author’s background as a composer is evident, as he enriches the story with an original orchestral piece that reflects his dual passions for music and dinosaurs. This auditory element, along with the AI-assisted illustrations, provides a modern and interactive layer to the storytelling, making it an enjoyable and educational read. The author includes a note explaining the use of AI assistance in creating the illustrations. Although a few images might display minor imperfections, they do not detract from the story’s captivating narrative. This book is an educational tool, seamlessly blending fun facts about dinosaurs with insights into various musical instruments and their sounds. This approach captivates the young reader’s imagination and serves as a springboard for discussions about music and paleontology in classroom settings, particularly in music education.

A Dinosaur Symphony opens up opportunities for meaningful conversations between children and parents about diverse music genres, the role of different instruments, and, intriguingly, the prehistoric creatures that once roamed our planet. This inventive and informative book is an excellent resource for nurturing young minds to appreciate music and natural history.
