Fostering True Growth
Posted by Literary Titan

In I Respectfully Disagree, you challenge readers to view disagreements as opportunities for growth through relatable anecdotes and a five-pillar framework for fostering respectful dialogue. What inspired you to write this book?
I wrote I Respectfully Disagree because I needed it for myself first. I’ve always leaned toward being a disrespectful disagreer, and I wanted to grow beyond that. As I delved into research, I began sharing the idea in my presentations and training sessions: “We can vehemently disagree with someone’s ideology and still passionately pursue their humanity.” This phrase resonated deeply with audiences, sparking questions like, “How do you actually do that?” or “But what if they believe this?” This book is my answer to those heartfelt challenges—it’s a guide to navigating these complex conversations and fostering true growth through respect.
Is there one anecdote within your book that especially resonates with you?
Yes, The Tortoise Principle resonates with me profoundly. As a recovering perfectionist, I often want to crush it, win the race, and get everything right immediately. However, the principle reminds me that life isn’t about conquering every challenge in one stride but intentional growth along the journey. It calls me to slow down, be strategic, and focus on progress over perfection. No matter how small, every step forward matters more than momentary applause or approval.
What is one misconception you think many people have regarding effective communication?
The biggest misconception is that effective communication is a two-way street. While it involves at least two people, the truth is, I can only control myself. When I reframe communication as my opportunity to plant seeds—even when the conversation veers off course—it shifts my perspective. Instead of matching someone’s energy or getting derailed by frustration, I focus on what I can give to the interaction. This mindset has made every conversation a chance to lead with integrity, even in the most challenging moments.
What is one thing you hope readers are able to take away from I Respectfully Disagree?
I hope readers realize that respect is always a choice. Even when we disagree, we can choose to respect others—and that’s far more powerful than simply agreeing to disagree. Along the way, we’ll make mistakes (trust me, I still do), but every misstep is an opportunity to apologize, recalibrate, and keep walking the path of respectful disagreement. It’s not about perfection; it’s about perseverance in pursuing respect, even when it’s hard. That’s where real growth and connection happen.

Divisions are on the rise around the world, and 2024 may well be a peak year. We’re losing the ability to disagree without dehumanizing. There is a deep need for this practical and accessible guide to having challenging conversations in any situation, from the workplace to the classroom to the dinner table.
It’s not about saying the right words at the right time but something vastly deeper. In this book, you’ll discover the 5 pillars of respectfully disagreeing:
Challenge your perspective
Be the student
Cultivate your curiosity
Seek the gray
Agree to respect
But this is not a weighty tome. Each chapter features a cartoon, and Justin Jones-Fosu tackles this serious subject with a playful and compassionate tone. For example, he writes I have become more and more intentional in my desire to respectfully disagree with others (except those who think putting ketchup on eggs is wrongthere is no hope for respect there).
With a wide range of examples and exercises throughout, this is a timely and reader-friendly handbook to disagreeing with someone’s ideology while passionately pursuing their humanity.

I Respectfully Disagree
Posted by Literary Titan

Justin Jones-Fosu’s I Respectfully Disagree delves into the delicate art of navigating tough conversations in an increasingly polarized world. The book introduces practical tools and principles to bridge divides without sacrificing authenticity or relationships. Using relatable anecdotes, Jones-Fosu outlines a five-pillar framework for fostering meaningful and respectful dialogue while challenging readers to see disagreements as opportunities for growth rather than barriers.
What I loved most about this book is how it feels deeply personal yet universally applicable. Jones-Fosu draws on his upbringing and professional experiences to underline the importance of empathy and perspective. The chapter introducing “Golden Respect” particularly stood out to me. It redefines respect not as something earned or transactional but as a fundamental acknowledgment of humanity. I found the comparison between societal respect norms and Golden Respect’s ideals enlightening, especially the principle that respect is more about internal conviction than external behaviors. This notion reframed how I approach disagreements in my life.
The stories Jones-Fosu uses to illustrate his points hit close to home. It’s a reminder that behind every sharp word is a tangled web of past experiences and unmet expectations. Similarly, the chapter on the power dynamics in workplace disagreements gave me pause. The tale of Jonathan, the corporate leader who mistook dissent for disrespect, highlighted how unchecked authority stifles innovation and erodes trust—a cautionary tale for anyone in a leadership role. Another standout is the Tortoise Principle, which emphasizes small, consistent efforts over grand gestures in fostering better communication habits. It’s a comforting idea in a world where instant solutions are often glorified. The book’s refusal to oversimplify the complexities of human interaction is refreshing.
I Respectfully Disagree is a timely, heartfelt, and actionable guide for anyone seeking to engage in deeper, more constructive conversations. It’s ideal for professionals, families, and anyone striving to connect across differences with empathy and respect. If you’ve ever found yourself dreading confrontations or unsure how to disagree without damaging relationships, this book will give you the tools to navigate those challenges with confidence and care. Highly recommended!
