The Caregiver’s Journey

The Caregiver's Journey: A Roadmap for Navigating Your Path by [Pamela S. Showalter, Raylene Bell]

The Caregiver’s Journey: A Roadmap for Navigating Your Path, by Pamela S. Showalter and Raylene Bell, follows Margene Saxon Bell’s descent into dementia and her caregivers’ difficult journey through it. The book details a five-year path through the illness and through the numerous ups and downs, all-the-while giving insight into what caregivers do and how difficult dealing with such illnesses can be, especially on a psychological level.

Showalter and Bell write in a practical and descriptive way. The book is written from Pamela’s point of view, and she never forgets to give readers effective advice on how to look after their loved one or how to find the issue’s origin. All of it is explained in the chapter takeaway and more in detail in the appendix.

As a reader keen on details, I appreciated the appendix at the end of the book, which focuses on important aspects concerning caretakers and caregivers. This will definitely be helpful for anyone in the same situation as the writers.

The aim of this book is to give aid to anyone that might find themselves with an ill loved one who needs medical care. The anecdotes within this book are touching, but the book does a fantastic job of providing readers with ample advice, tips, and inspiration.

The Caregiver’s Journey is an excellent guide on eldercare. What I liked best about this book is that is provides a plethora of actionable advice and tips, where other books speak in generalities this book gets into the details. I also liked how the books suggestions are coupled with guidance developed through real world experience. With its emotional charge and practical advice for readers, this book will prove to be a quick and touching read.
