Talk To Kids About the Hard Things

Author Interview
Chiyuki Krider Author Interview

The Happiest Cat in the World follows a homeless dreaming cat who imagines what it is like to live each day in the lap of luxury while in dreamland. What was the inspiration for your story?

In the beginning, I was creating a completely different story in Japanese. I never imagined I would publish a picture book in United States. But one day, when I trying to wrap up the Japanese story, I suddenly got the idea of this book in my head.

What educational aspects were important for you to include in this children’s book?

Freedom. It’s a complicated topic. If someone said “I will give you freedom” then sometimes it ends up being that person subverts your freedom, without you even knowing. Sometimes freedom can create selfishness or careless…. It’s complicated, but personally, I believe freedom and a little bit of restriction are not in conflict and can mean the best version of freedom. I know some people think it’s too early to teach or share important topics with little children, but I don’t think so. I believe little kids understand things much more than we adults know. Also, I think it’s important to let your kids have a habit of contemplating hard or impossible things so they can find the answer. I have a feeling that the materialistic society of today is coming to an end and that a new era will begin in the not-too-distant future. And I believe that it is the generation of today’s young children who will take the lead in taking on the challenge of this new era. I thought I wanted to share my ideas with everyone in the hope of I can help little children in the future even a little bit.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing and illustrating?

All the scenes where the cat is enjoying freedom. That is what I want my kids to have in the future and for everyone else in this world to have in the future.

However, the reality is that a lot of people don’t have it right now.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out and what can your fans expect in the next story?

I don’t think I will make it series. But I’m sure I will share another story when it’s ready.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the publishers, BookBildr and Eliza. They made my first published picture book wonderful.

“The Happiest Cat in the World” is a children’s book about a cat’s dream of a happy life. Even though the cat is unaware that it’s dreaming, it has a goal to be free and happy.

The purpose of this story is to prompt children to contemplate freedom and animal welfare, particularly given the swift changes happening in the world today. In this picture book, I endeavor to depict both the dreams and the reality of the cat’s life. In its dreams, the cat is free, happy, and has everything it needs for a comfortable and happy life. But the cat’s reality is very different.

While the cat remains unaware of its circumstances, readers can comprehend its situation. By mentally substituting “the cat” with “a human being,” the author hopes to encourage children to ponder freedom and how to attain it.

The story emphasizes that almost anything is possible if one refuses to give up.

Phoebe PhobiCat Versus Broccoli

Phoebe PhobiCat Versus Broccoli by Brianna Brown is a delightful tale that tackles a common childhood fear in a fun and relatable way. The story introduces us to Phoebe, a charming little cat who is absolutely terrified of broccoli. When dinner time rolls around, and she’s faced with the dreaded green veggie, Phoebe reacts with sheer panic, clambering onto the kitchen chandelier to escape. What follows is a sweet and clever exchange between Phoebe and her mother, who uses playful logic to help Phoebe overcome her fear. By the end, Phoebe takes a brave bite of broccoli and realizes that it’s not so bad after all.

I absolutely adored how this picture book balances humor with a subtle but important message. The exaggerated fear Phoebe shows is something that will resonate with kids, making it easier for them to see their own anxieties in a different light. The way Mama PhobiCat gently coaxes Phoebe into trying the broccoli through a series of comparisons is both clever and effective. Comparing the stinky broccoli to Daddy after yard work or the floppy vegetable to Phoebe’s favorite bunny was great because it’s a fun and accessible way for kids to reframe their fears.

The writing is simple yet engaging, making it perfect for young readers or a read-aloud session with parents. The repetition of Phoebe’s protests—“They’re stinky!” “They’re floppy!”—is sure to get giggles while also reinforcing the main point. The resolution is satisfying, as Phoebe realizes that trying new things isn’t so scary after all. I especially liked the way the story doesn’t just dismiss Phoebe’s fear but rather acknowledges it and works through it, making the lesson feel organic rather than forced.

On top of the story’s charm, the illustrations by Kashif Qasim are wonderfully vibrant and bring Phoebe’s world to life. The expressions on Phoebe’s face, from her wide-eyed terror to her eventual pride, are just priceless and add an extra layer of emotion to the narrative. The kitchen scene where Phoebe is clinging to the chandelier is particularly well done and will likely be a favorite among readers.

Phoebe PhobiCat Versus Broccoli is a must-read for any child dealing with the fear of trying new things. It’s a lighthearted yet impactful children’s book that would be perfect for kids aged 3-7, especially those who might be going through a “picky eater” phase.

The Happiest Cat in the World

Prepare to be swept into the thought-provoking world of The Happiest Cat in the World. This charming picture book by Chiyuki Krider introduces us to a cat who believes it is living in the lap of luxury with endless freedom, food, and fun. The catch? It’s all a dream. Our feline friend lives a starkly different reality, surviving on the unpredictable kindness of strangers. This story elegantly dances on the line between dreams and reality, encouraging young readers and adults alike to reflect on the concepts of freedom and happiness, sparking reflection and engagement.

Krider uses the cat’s innocent perspective to delve into heavy themes such as autonomy and the harshness of life without becoming too heavy for its intended audience. The way the cat narrates its imagined freedoms juxtaposed with its real-life struggles adds a layer of poignant irony. You can’t help but hope for the cat’s dreams to somehow become reality, even as the book subtly hints at the impossibility of such an outcome.

Visually, the book is just as impactful. The illustrations, also crafted by Krider, are charming hand-drawn sketches that reflect the simplicity of the narrative. The straightforward style fits beautifully with the narrative’s nature.

By using a cat’s perspective to explore the theme of freedom, Krider invites young readers to consider what freedom means to them. It’s a great way to introduce such a complex idea to children, making it relatable and understandable through the eyes of an animal. The story’s end, tinged with a bittersweet note as we come to terms with the cat’s reality, invites discussion and reflection, making it an excellent book for parents and teachers to explore with their kids.

The Happiest Cat in the World is a gentle exploration of dreams versus reality through the eyes of a hopeful cat. This children’s book would be an excellent addition to any young reader’s library, especially for those who love animals or need a thoughtful nudge to discuss deeper topics.

Love, Hope, and Caring

Teresa L. Wallace Author Interview

The Last Thing Mama Wanted follows a little girl who wants a kitten, but since her mom does not want to get one, she has to learn to remain optimistic and patient. What was the inspiration for your story?

My daughter, Hannah, was my inspiration. She patiently asked for a kitten several times. I was reluctant (as moms sometimes are!) but we found the real-life Casey at an animal shelter. Hannah’s perseverance helped me to see her heart-felt desire. Casey was loved before she was adopted by Hannah. It was love all around. This is what inspired me to write this story.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

A family’s love and never giving up hope. I hope my readers can see the love this family (mine) has for each other. Not all families have this. I did not have this when I was a child. I want my readers to see the example of love, hope, and caring that is possible for their future.

Was there anything from your own life that you put into the characters in your book?

Oh, yes! It was nearly all from my own life. It’s a mostly true story, including the way the characters look. Unfortunately, the part where Daddy fixes the back steps is not accurate. He’s a good man, but my husband is not skilled in this area.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when is that book due out?

My next book, Gus Goes to the Farm, is at the publisher and will hopefully be out this Summer!

It’s true. Mama wants a lot of things, so that’s what she gets. But it’s not what Hannah wants. Hannah wants only one thing. Something she thinks about every day. Hannah needs a kitten of her very own. A little kitten to hold and listen to it purr. And Mama just doesn’t seem to understand. Will Hannah ever get her kitten?

The Last Thing Mama Wanted

Teresa L. Wallace’s The Last Thing Mama Wanted is a captivating and emotionally resonant tale that masterfully captures the essence of childhood longing. Hannah, the young protagonist, is portrayed with a depth that is both remarkable and relatable. Her journey, filled with dreams of acquiring a pet cat, is a poignant exploration of hope and patience. Throughout the narrative, Hannah’s vibrant imagination and unwavering optimism shine through, making her an endearing and memorable character.

The book’s illustrations are a standout feature, adding a rich visual layer to the story. They are not just complementary but integral to the narrative, enhancing the reader’s engagement and empathy with Hannah’s experiences. The vivid and lively artwork invites readers into Hannah’s imaginative world, making each page a joy to explore. One of the book’s most striking qualities is its ability to weave a simple tale of longing into a broader narrative about the rewards of patience and the unpredictability of life. The ending, where Hannah’s dreams are unexpectedly fulfilled, is both satisfying and heartwarming. It brings a sense of closure to Hannah’s journey while also leaving the reader with a lingering sense of delight.

The Last Thing Mama Wanted is an exquisitely crafted story that resonates with a wide audience. It’s a testament to Wallace’s skill as a storyteller and an illustrator’s ability to bring a story to life. This book is not only a delightful read for young children but also offers a charming and thoughtful experience for any reader who remembers the joys and trials of childhood dreams.

The Most Purrfect Home Of All

A little one-eyed stray cat without a name is happy living in a rusty old truck in a meadow far away from people. Until one winter’s day he returns to find his home being towed away. So, the cat sets off to find a new home before he succumbs to the cold, but he struggles to find one. Either another animal lives there, or it is too scary. Then caught in a blizzard he stumbles across a cottage and takes refuge on the porch. The following day footsteps scare him away. Hungry that night, he returns to the cottage to find a bowl of food waiting for him. Could this be the purrfect home he has been searching for?

The Most Purrfect Home Of All, written by Susanne Rea and illustrated by Maria Andrieieva, is a heart-warming picture book based on the life of a real cat who wants to find a forever home. The homeless cat shows courage as he seeks out a new home. He is determined to never give up, and in the process, learns to trust humans again. The man in the story shows compassion for a stray animal even when the animal is hesitant to trust again.

The artwork complements this sentimental story, with the color pallet of the changing seasons matching the cat’s mood – bright, cheerful colors when he is happy, and darker monotone colors when he is struggling. This children’s book is entertaining and captivating for young readers. It is a story of hope and compassion. This beautifully written book is even better because a portion of the proceeds goes to supporting homeless and abused animals in Hungary.

The Most Purrfect Home Of All is a heartfelt picture book that will capture the hearts of children and animal lovers. The cat’s adventure to find the perfect home is one that will draw in young readers and teach them the lessons of courage, compassion, determination, and the importance of trusting others.
