Ruby the Stingray is three years old and has all the emotions that come with being an active youngster. She reacts quickly and without first thinking. Ruby is learning, though. Her parents are diligent and intentional with their lessons on controlling reactions to emotions and remembering to think before she speaks. Being little is certainly hard, and Ruby is in the perfect position to help her little brother navigate the same emotional waters. From accidents to dangerous situations, Ruby does a wonderful job keeping herself calm and thoughtful and passing her knowledge on to her brother.
Ruby the Emotional Stingray, by Christal Majestic, is a unique children’s book written with parents and toddlers in mind. Majestic’s main character, Ruby, is typical of every little one who reacts with intense emotion and tends to lash out before giving themselves think-time. She is the ideal character for the 2-5 age group. Young children and emerging readers will find the author’s memory tools for remaining calm easy to remember and even easier to use. Majestic’s story provides parents who may be at their wit’s end with a wonderful strategy that can be immediately employed.
Majestic’s illustrations are precious. Sweet, expressive faces against bold but simple backgrounds dominate the pages. Readers will find themselves focused on Ruby and the other characters’ faces as they grapple with each trying situation. Majestic clearly understands the importance of conveying emotion through both text and illustrations.
As a mother, I would love to have had a book like this when discussing self-control and how to remain calm in stressful situations with my little ones. Majestic’s contribution to the parenting genre is invaluable. I will, without a doubt, gift Majestic’s fantastic story to my friends and coworkers who are currently fighting the good fight with their headstrong toddlers.

Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood follows a boy who, despite growing up in the absence of his father, battles life’s adversities and triumphs as an exceptional father himself. What inspired the idea behind this inspiring children’s book?
I opened up about my personal journey of growing up without a father during a speech that I delivered at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina on February 22, 2023. I shared the pain, anger, and confusion that I experienced during those challenging times. However, what I wanted to emphasize the most was the beautiful transformation that emerged from those difficult moments.
The audience was deeply touched by my openness. It was in that profound moment that I realized my story couldn’t end there. It was then that I made the decision to turn my speech into a book titled Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood. Through this book, I aspire to offer a glimmer of hope to single parents and their children, using the character of Lamar as a shining example of resilience and strength.
Initially, I had planned to surprise everyone with the book’s release on Father’s Day. However, out of respect for all the incredible dads out there, I decided to wait and release it on July 15, 2023, which happens to be National Give Something Away Day. I believe that by sharing my personal story, I can give others the gift of healing.
Lamar’s support system is described as a beacon of inspiration. Can you tell us more about how you developed these characters and their influence on Lamar?
Uncle Levon holds a special place in my heart, much like my Uncle Tony. In the absence of my father, he has been a central father figure in my life, my very first superhero. Recently, he shared a poignant story with me, reminding me that I am not his first nephew, but his second. His first nephew was my late cousin Kendrick, who tragically passed away from Leukemia at the tender age of 3. At the time, I was just 1 year old, and Uncle Tony was a mere 19 years old. Kendrick’s passing had a profound impact on Uncle Tony, my mom Wanda, and my granny Beulah. Together, they made a vow to protect me and ensure I wouldn’t suffer a similar fate. Their love for me became a healing force in their lives, while also serving as a shield to safeguard my own.
My name is a reflection of Kendrick’s, a tribute that carries immense meaning. To my granny, I wasn’t just her grandson; she saw me as her own son. As a result, she kept me close by her side. Granny and I shared an unbreakable bond in that regard. She was not only my grandmother but also my best friend, teaching me invaluable life lessons on parenthood, friendship, leadership, prayer, and life. Uncle Tony, on the other hand, always came to my rescue, no matter the circumstances, even if it meant sacrificing his own well-being. He taught me what it means to be a man. My mom instilled in me the values of hard work and the importance of perseverance, showing me how to navigate life’s obstacles with unwavering determination.
I learned invaluable lessons about resilience, compassion, and strength through the love and guidance of Granny, Uncle Tony, my mom, and so many others. They each played a part in shaping me into the person that I am today. On that note, I’m forever grateful for their presence in my life.
Many readers can relate to the challenges Lamar faced. What advice would you give to young readers who are experiencing similar circumstances and looking for guidance and solace?
I would assure them that God has a purpose for their suffering. He is using it to bring about something greater, both for His kingdom and for their own lives. I would encourage them to place their trust not only in God but also in the process of refinement they are currently undergoing. In times of doubt or uncertainty, I would direct them to find solace and strength in Psalms 23 and 121. These Psalms are filled with promises that remind us of God’s unwavering presence, guidance, and protection over us.
While I’ve said all of that, I realize that prayer may not always be enough, and that’s perfectly okay. On that note, I would encourage them to consider talking to someone they trust about the possibility of seeking counseling. Opening up to a professional can provide additional tools and perspectives to help navigate their journey towards healing and restoration.
But most of all, I would remind them that they are not alone and that there is hope for a brighter future beyond their current pain.
What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?
I’m excited about the future of Lamar’s series and the meaningful stories that will unfold. Each book will continue to explore different themes and offer readers valuable insights and perspectives.
I’m currently working on developing a Christmas Story featuring Lamar. I envision this story to be filled with humor and a valuable lesson that resonates with readers. My plan is to release it in time for this holiday season.
Looking ahead, the next story in the series will focus on mental health. It’s an important topic that deserves attention, and I’m passionate about addressing it through Lamar’s narrative. I anticipate releasing this book in either May or June of 2025, allowing ample time to delve into the complexities of mental health with care and sensitivity.
Please stay tuned for more updates and announcements as I continue to bring Lamar to life.
This award wnnbook is published by The Rules of a Big Boss LLC. It is largely inspired by Dedrick L. Moone’s personal journey as a father. The author has written this story with the intention of uplifting single parents and their children, emphasizing that joy can arise from any pain experienced in life. Dedrick hopes to convey that God is always preparing us for something greater, beyond our wildest imagination. He encourages readers to trust in God, hold onto His unchanging hand, and know that they are loved, as they witness something extraordinary unfold through their journey. With this message, the author wishes to inspire and encourage readers, and expresses his gratitude for their support.
CJ Silvers and the Long Ride follows a young girl as she attends her first wakeboard lesson who is afraid and wants to quit when things get hard. What was the inspiration for your story?
I was inspired by my daughter attending a girls’ ride wakeboard event. While there, I saw many girls being scared to get hurt and the negative emotions around not succeeding. I also saw many families supporting their daughters. As the event progressed, I saw falling/failing become less emotional, and small successes drive the girls to succeed. This was important to me as my daughter was one of the girls.
Was there anything from your own life that you put into the characters in your book?
The main character CJ Silvers is based on my daughter, Cassidy. She is now nine, and I am very proud that she has the confidence to try new things. I also tried to capture my wife Rebecca’s spirit and how she talks to Cassidy to help her grow up.
What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?
I think it was important to show that failure is part of learning and getting better. Also, failure itself is not fun, but with practice and guidance, everyone can achieve great things.
Where does the next book in the series take the characters?
CJ Silvers and her family will be having a Christmas adventure. New characters will be introduced, and a clear message that presents are not the most important part of the holiday season will be delivered.
In Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart, author Pam Pech gracefully narrates the poignant tale of Gabbi, a homeless dog whose life is marked by hardship and loneliness. From a raw existence on the streets, picking up scraps of food, to a life confined within a cage, Gabbi’s journey resonates with heartbreaking reality. Often unfairly labeled as a “bad dog,” Gabbi’s yearning for understanding and a place to call home is a testament to her enduring spirit.
Parallel to Gabbi’s narrative is the story of Ben, a man incarcerated due to past missteps. Yet beneath the societal label of a prisoner beats a heart filled with kindness and goodness. When he learns about the imminent Pups on Parole project, Ben’s aspiration to become a trainer adds an invigorating dimension to his tale. The narrative deftly poses the intriguing question: What will unfold when Gabbi and Ben cross paths?
Pech’s moving story is a metaphor for the universal human condition, underscoring our imperfections and the innate need for love and connection. The story is rooted in the real-life Pups on Parole program in Nevada, where the remarkable alliance between prisoners and dogs was forged–an alliance that significantly benefits both parties. The initiative deserves praise for its innovative approach toward fostering companionship and a sense of purpose among inmates.
Embedded within this narrative are valuable life lessons that resonate on multiple levels. First and foremost is the acknowledgment that love and kindness are essential to all living beings, including our animal companions. Gabbi symbolizes countless neglected street dogs who are spurned rather than rehabilitated. Pech’s storytelling instills awareness about the humane treatment of pets and emphasizes the deleterious effects of demeaning labels on individuals.
Joan Zander Millard’s splendid illustrations enhance this narrative, breathing life into the characters and effectively capturing their emotions. The development of the characters is meticulous and impressive, resulting in a narrative that is engaging, educational, and easily accessible.
Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart, by Pam Pech, is an exceptional book with incredible depth. It captivates with its striking visuals and enlightening storyline. As a perfect fusion of entertainment and education, it is an excellent picture book for children and young adults.
Mr. Fuzzy Ears: The Mystery of the Missing Bunnies by Donna Carr Roberts is a fun and adventurous tale of Mr. Fuzzy, a dog who aspires to become a police officer. When a group of bunnies goes missing, the mystery becomes an opportunity when Mr. Fuzzy is tasked with the investigation. Taking his job seriously, he quickly and diligently gets to work, visiting neighborhood animals, pets, and characters around town to find the bunnies. It’s a fun but meaningful journey that helps Mr. Fuzzy learn new skills while solving a mystery.
The author does a wonderful job of introducing the reader to Mr. Fuzzy’s world and his enthusiasm for becoming part of an important investigation. As Officer Fuzzy, the dog embraces his new role, collecting clues and information and making inquiries to find the bunnies, tracing their every move and where they were last seen. Not only is the author a creative writer but also an excellent illustrator for the book.
I read the book to my kids, who enjoyed how well Mr. Fuzzy put together different clues, or puzzle pieces, to find out where the bunnies were located. It’s a fun story for elementary school kids and a fantastic way to develop reading skills while enjoying beautiful illustrations. I like how the story and Mr. Fuzzy’s character promote a sense of curiosity and looking for answers by using different resources and making inquiries to find a solution.
Mr. Fuzzy Ears: The Mystery of the Missing Bunnies is a fantastic picture book for a young audience. I especially enjoyed the likable characters, the illustrations of animals, and the confidence that comes with solving a problem and helping others. It’s a great read and a visually appealing children’s book.
How to Stand Up to Bullying explores the multifaceted nature of bullying, offering practical tools and empathetic insights to confront and redirect these behaviors for readers of all ages. Why was this an important book for you to write?
I wrote, How to Stand Up to Bullying, during a raw moment in my life in which I allowed everything to pour out without holding back, from experiences in my youth to what I’ve learned along the way as an adult. The project, at first, was my personal way of just getting out what I held inside as something therapeutic. When I went back and reread what I wrote, I felt the need to publish it as soon as possible as it was something bigger than me and everyone could benefit from reading.
What is a common misconception you feel people have about bullying?
A misconception is that bullying is a phase in youth believed they will eventually grow out of and parents tend to shrug it off since they may have gone through bullying themselves as children. Some children may require more assistance in standing up for themselves, but if they don’t have the support they won’t always be successful.
What is one piece of advice that someone else gave you about bullying that has stayed with you today?
My mom would tell me when I was young to walk away and that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me.” The common phrase is not entirely true since name-calling does hurt emotionally and leaves deep scars.
What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?
I hope readers take the subject matter series in what leads to bullying in the first place in order for everyone to have a part in standing up to it.
Bullying. Something that is done every second, daily. Don’t need a statistic to be told otherwise. Many don’t even realize they are a constant victim of bullying, as it tends to get buried as an underlying emotion. Many don’t realize they are actually a bully themselves. There are several references for parents to go to in order to help their children stand up against it, but there’s not much for adults or resources depicting why a bully is a bully in the first place. That’s the first step. Before we all can stand up to bullying, we must first understand why a bully bullies to begin with.
Nurse Florence, What is Rosacea? is an educational book that follows curious students as they explore the complexities of rosacea with the help of Nurse Florence. Do you have any personal experiences or connections with rosacea that influenced the tone or content of the book?
I had a friend in high school that had it. Nurse Florence plans to publish a book for every disease so that every family can have an educational tool to inform their kids for healthy living.
What research methods did you employ to ensure that the information about rosacea was both accurate and suitable for a young audience?
The Nurse Florence series gets all of its information from either my nursing school pathophysiology textbooks or a highly respected medical organization like the Mayo Clinic. We think we have found the sweet spot of simplifying the information for kids while still maintaining scientific accuracy so that the books are reliable information for reference. We try to keep the information to one big idea per drawing.
Can you elaborate on the process of weaving complex medical information into a narrative that would resonate with children without overwhelming them?
I spend a lot of time researching the material before writing it. I think about what should be included in each page and let my thoughts “simmer.” When I start to get the drawings from the assigned illustrator, the images inspire me, and then I synthesize the information. I write the books as if I am talking to my kids since my kids are the original target audience of the series. I think that by keeping each page to one big idea, then children will not be overwhelmed.
What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?
At any moment, we have about 40 books in production. One of the next in the series that I am really looking forward to doing is Nurse Florence, Why Should We Avoid Illegal Drugs? I hope that this book can be used in classrooms around the country to help prevent kids from going down the path of addiction.
Sometimes it seems only a nurse can bring technical information down to an understanding that an ordinary person can grasp. The Nurse Florence(R) book series provides high-quality medical information that even a child can grasp. By introducing young kids to correct terminology and science concepts at an early age, we can help increase our children’s health literacy level as well as helpprepare them for courses and jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We need more scientists so I hope that many children will enjoy this book series and consider a job involving science–Introducing Some Medical Words to Kids in Every Book.
