The Hat

Charlie is a lonely little mouse with only a single friend. But one day his luck turns when he finds a bowler hat on the floor. It is a magical hat that fits him perfectly and makes him so happy, until he is mocked for wearing it. But soon Charlie learns that it’s okay to laugh at yourself sometimes, and that you can make mistakes and that is okay as well. With his new found confidence Charlie goes on to be a very successfully comedian.

This is a charming children’s book that shows young readers the important of laughing a little. Charlie was so glum in the beginning of the book, and by the end his happiness is so bright. The story takes an adventurous twist, and I wasn’t sure what would happen next. But the story is imbued with creativity throughout so that each scene is captivating.

The artwork is fantastic and I enjoyed the dark shades throughout the city. It gave the story a bit of a noir and classic Disney cartoon feel. Charlie is a charming little mouse and the artwork accentuates that throughout the story.

The Hat by Darya Lenkou is an entertaining picture book that will take readers on an imaginative adventure where they will learn about one of the funniest people in history.

A Dream Adventure

Sharon Purtill Author Interview

Sled With Me takes readers on a dream adventure to the North Pole where they meet a variety of holiday characters in a fun rhyming picture book. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I wanted to create a fun book about Santa’s workshop and the North Pole that didn’t necessarily have to be just for the Christmas season. I wanted it to be a dream adventure you could take anytime of the year filled with wonder and interesting things to discover. With my illustrator’s help, I believe we accomplished this goal.

The art in this book is cute and colorful. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Tamara Piper?

Terrific, Tarmara and I make a great team. I give her total control, initially, over the illustrations. She prepares the first draft of sketches and if there is something I feel is off base, we discuss and adjust if needed before going onto the colour phase. In most cases, I love how she interputes my words and helps bring them to life. I believe it’s best when the writting is left to me, and the creative process of bring the story to life through pictures is left to her. Sled With Me is the fourth project we’ve worked on together. Two more are already in the works.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun creating?

I think the first scene inside the workshop is the most fun. There is so much to see. Kids should have a blast looking at all the details and trying to spot the different elements within the illustrations.

What can readers expect in the next book in the Wherever Shall We Go Series?

The next book in this series, which is already being illustrated, is a dream adventure to the jungle. There will be so many animals, plants and birds to discover. After the jungle book is released, a dream adventure to the forest will come next. Both of these series books will be released in 2023.

My Favorite Place To Visit

Charlene Sánchez Author Interview

Where’s El Morro?: Rani’s adventure at Old San Juan follows a little girl and her grandfather who tour Old San Juan and see the historical landmarks. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

Old San Juan has always been my favorite place to visit because to me, it symbolizes home. I have tons of cherished memories of the place, so when we moved from Puerto Rico to the US it was important to keep my children connected to it. Even though it’s a fictional story, the character of Rani represents my kids and the grandfather is a conduit to teach them all about this beautiful historical place.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

The main idea was to mix colorful visuals with the background information to keep it engaging for kids. When creating the illustrations, I wanted to showcase all the different elements you admire when visiting Old San Juan. It was essential to incorporate the array of colors of the Spanish-style buildings in contrast with the old stone look of the castle, church, etc.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun illustrating?

It’s difficult to pinpoint one in particular because drawing every single element felt like being back home, but if I had to choose one, I think it would have to be the Old San Juan street (which you see at the beginning of the story and cover). It combines everything I love about the place, the buildings full of color, the cobblestone street, the ocean in the background…I even added a Puerto Rican flag for good measure!

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I want to continue Rani’s adventure at Old San Juan, this time teaching her about the governor’s mansion (which you read about on the last page of the first book) however, I am currently working on a coloring book showcasing PR’s 78 municipalities. The goal is to publish three more books in 2023, all of them dedicated to my dear island of Puerto Rico.

Rani and her grandfather are walking down a cobblestone street in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, when they overhear a tourist ask, “Where’s El Morro?” Rani’s childish curiosity is set in motion as she asks her grandfather, “What is El Morro?” And the story’s quest begins.
Help Rani find El Morro while also learning about the historic Puerto Rican city.

This book will help kids from the island or from the diaspora learn more about Old San Juan and its treasures!

These Outrageous Crimes

Natalie Grand Author Interview

Cult Girls tells the story of Talia and her friends as they struggle with suspicions that their faith is a patriarchal religious cult. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I was raised a 3rd and 4th generation Jehovah’s Witness and I witnessed numerous friends as children sexually abused and their education and social education suppressed as a result of this high control organization that doesn’t evolve with modern social awareness. As a child I would hear public talks that were directed from the higher organization likening homosexuality to beastality (which animals are not consensual, so that is rape) and terrible labels pinned or certain sexual orientations. Also women have no representation in the church and are being judged and controlled by company appointed men to report personal details of interrogations the elders have in little embarrassing back rooms in front of their friends and family directly after worship. I have had minor friends accused of seducing men older than their father in child sex crimes and were publicly shamed and interrogated as minors, their parents did not report the abuse to authority because of their spiritual positions in the kingdom hall. Also because of the disfellowship arrangements that can be placed on youths, I knew two youths that committed suicide in my area after being announced to the congregation that they are now removed as a Jehovah’s Witness. I was announced as a Jehovah’s Witness as a teenage and it was one of the most horrific things I survived, even your own parents are to change their socialization and cannot be seen with you in public or even allowed to have dinner with you. Later I was married in it and husband’s are assigned as a wife’s boss and that means if he decides if you are allowed to work, go to the gym and what you can wear and you are required to obey him. As a Jehovah’s Witness you are constantly reminded in graphic films, photographs, their publications, high frequency of meetings that Armageddon is any day and that your life might not be spared and your job is to warn others, even in your primary school. College and very strong distrust in of medical doctors in is their published propaganda and culture. Elders have been removed from their appointments because of their daughters going to college, that is basically a bad example of a parent in the church of Jehovah’s Witness in their standard today. There is other odd criminal activities that are allowed in the organization from their leaders such as Voyerism and Child Pornography, neither are a crime to the Jehovah Judicial system and would not remove an elder, per sea, but in the world these outrageous crimes. Many of these issues are lightly addressed in my fun graphic Novel.

What do you feel is a common misconception people have about cults?

People think that a cult won’t affect someone in their house or that teachers and medical professionals need to mind their own business because of the rights of religious freedom. These cults are working hard to target youths. As a full time recruiter of Jehovah’s Witness, I went through a secret society called pioneering within the organization. I even got a secret book. I worked very hard to get my training and acceptance into pioneer ministry school that was only held once a year with higher traveling overseers in it and basically they train you to talk to householders, including children without their parents permission. Basically you can show pictures and scriptures to support that the last days are here and that apcolypse is around that corner and you can teach them to lie and hide what they are learning if their parents were not going to be supportive and that would be acceptable as a Jehovah’s Witness evangelist under their “theocratic warfare” ethic code. Jehovah’s Witnesses have a strong marketing presence now in ports, colleges, public squares, parks where children play and state fairs. As a child I use to bring brochures in my backpack to place with other students and tell them about the firey apocalypse that will happen any day.

Teachers and medical professionals see and know that their student or patient is a Jehovah’s Witness but most have no clue that they are being peddled to market this publishing and film company, being shown violent scenes, hearing that police and secular authorities are part of Satan’s wicked world. So how could these children feel safe to reach out to an authority when these ones are control by Satan and evil. A child is told that “these are God’s people” and children are encouraged to socialize with all ages and are told this is their new spiritual family and supersedes the physical blood line family. They are also told these appointed men that are elders and ministerial serrvants are “appointed by god” they are likened to apostles, some of them even sitting next to God in paradise in the heavenly realm. So children put a layer down of stranger danger and that makes them vulnerable to predators attracted to this organization. None of the leaders carry any professional training on how to handle child or domestic abuse or the prevention of suicide and they certainly are not required to have a criminal check.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

This book is support the idea that our dreams, ideals and intelligence growth should be supported as women as young as a child. Children and woman raised in this religious cult culture are not asked what they want to be and basically giving your life to the church, marriage, your travels and extra time are to be donated to the church. No one can truly be your true friend, because if you are Jehovah’s Witness you are suppose to turn your friends in for speaking against the elders, apostacy (reading other religious books or theories) or doing something as silly as smoking a cigarette or using invitro. Many of these subjects are addressed in the book. Also I had a powerful scene of a flashback of me as a little girl in a scenario of needing a blood transfusion and the father feeling relieaved that he didn’t have the burden of taken care of her daughter because of having to reject the blood transfusion procedure. Thousands and thousands of Jehovah’s Witnesses (including children) have died for the rejection of blood transfusions, but yet they allow their members to eat meat on the bone dishes that have whole blood products in their food consumption.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?

Many young ladies were raised in a similar environment than this whether it was Jehovah’s Witness or a different cult and they found the humor healing. Other readers have family members including their mother that was raised in this environment and disfellowshipped for having a baby out of wedlock and suffered religious orphanism as a result and pain. This help give their loved ones a glimpse of what that member endured and also to bring awareness to understanding the alternative motive a family member, co-worker or fellow student has in recruiting you to their organization and some of the policies and culture they won’t tell you about or that they will sugar coat. This book has become popular in libraries because cult parents heavily monitor their children’s reading material, even wives have had to read this in the library. I am hoping with content like this and more awareness, lawsuits, journalism, documentary and memoirs these cults will change their policies that treat women differently than men, or are interrogating, shunning, restricting education and not reporting crimes and abuse of their members. We as a society have more power than you think to tear down walls of racism, women inequality, unfair treatment of the gay and lesbian communities and put social pressure on organizations like these.

Melody the Unicorn and the Beauty Within

Melody is different from all the other unicorns because she is the only unicorn with no color. Her friends reassure her that they do not care that she has no color, but she is determined to find some color somewhere. Melody sets out to give herself some color, in one way or another, but in the process of trying to be like the others she learns that there is something different and special about her after all.

This is a fun children’s book with a unique twist to the way it teaches children self-acceptance. In most children’s book the protagonist is often confronted with bullies or people that don’t accept them. I really enjoyed how, in this book, Melody is accepted by her friends for who she is. It’s Melody’s own thoughts and internal desire to be like others that drives the story forward. Each time she tries, her friends are very supportive and help her find what’s unique about her. This sends a fantastic message to children on a variety of different levels. They can relate to Melody where they’re struggling to find something unique about themselves, or they can relate to Melody’s friends where they learn to support one another no matter what.

The artwork throughout the book is vibrant and colorful and the faces on the little unicorns are very cute. Children will be drawn to all the bright colors. I enjoyed seeing all the different creative ways that Melody tried to include color in her.

Melody the Unicorn and the Beauty Within is an educational picture book that teaches self-love, self-acceptance and friendship through a fun story. Elementary teachers will be able to easily integrate this book into any lesson about diversity or acceptance and parents will have an easy time reading this wonderful book to their young ones at bedtime.

Struggled To Explain Their Identity

Huxley Ren Bunn Author Interview

Stan and Allen: A Book About Gender follows two non-binary alligators who are misgendered and educate their friends on gender-neutral language. What was the inspiration for your story?

The inspiration initially came from my own experiences explaining my identification of nonbinary to others. When I first told my parents about my identification they mistaked being nonbinary for being bisexual – a common misconception. I also thought about those I knew who were younger than me who also struggled to explain their identity to family or others. I wanted to create something which could act as a friendly tool for these conversations. A children’s book seemed to be a great format which could reach all ages.

My older brother, Brennan, is actually the great story-teller in the family – and has always been a creative inspiration for me. Brennan loves creating short stories. It really was his love which made me truly fall in love with writing and creating stories of my own.

What educational aspects were important for you to include in this children’s book?

The presentation of Stan and Allen was extremely important. I wanted the book to be visually stimulating to hold attention and also represent the positive nature of the story. If you follow closely you can see each character speaks in their own font style. It was also important to me to have the book rhyme to depict a friendly tone. Having anthropomorphic characters I believe is one the most important aspects of the book. Since Stan and Allen are both alligators we are able to just purely focus on the given topic – gender. Since animals are less ‘gendered’ than humans I believe it’s easier for someone new to the concept of non-binary to learn on an already fairly gender neutral alligator. Finally I also wanted a type of reflection included which is why the book ends with some pure educational pages. These include a dictionary type definition of what it means to be non-binary, three important things about gender, and some easy gender neutral greetings.

Overall I hope the book is able to serve as a great educational tool. I have had school counselors, students, pediatricians, parents and others express how helpful the book has been in their explanation and understanding of non-binary identification. The book is meant to help educate anyone of any age about what it means to be non-binary.

What were some of your inspirations as a writer?

I drew inspiration from my favorite children’s books : Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich and The Spider and the Fly. Both books have very unique illustrations, are written in rhyme, and are in square page format. My love for these two books and their formats helped inspire Stan and Allen to have hand drawn illustrations, rhyme, and be formatted in square pages.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

I am currently working on two more Stan and Allen books. One is a follow up on gender which dives deeper into the topic. The other is about ADHD. I have ADHD and realize all the negativity associated with it, but don’t agree. I hope to illustrate ADHD as a positive rather than a negative. Stan and Allen: A Book About Gender is my first published book through Archway publishing — I am currently working on marketing it and building up a following. My dream is to publish my next book through Simon and Schuster.

Stan and Allen are two alligator friends who decide to quench their thirst at the local Mud Slug. But while ordering, the alligators discover that not everyone knows what it means to be non-binary, and that’s okay!
Stan is here to help. In a kind and gentle way, he offers suggestions on how to extend gender neutral greetings, answers questions around pronouns, explains what it means to be non-binary, and encourages everyone to advocate for themselves. Best of all, Stan teaches the importance of accepting ourselves and others around us, just as we are.
Stan and Allen is the tale of two alligators who have a friendly conversation about gender that will educate and empower all ages about what it means to identify as non-binary.

The Whole Path of Life

Tuula Pere Author Interview

Leo, the Little Wanderer follows a little boy who sets off on a journey where he sees world wonders and meets kind people who help him. What inspired the setup to this story?

In the broadest sense, this story is inspired by the whole path of life. While wandering along it, we start from the front stairs of our childhood home and aim for something that interests and attracts us – perhaps even far away. When the journey is over, it’s time to return home to the last place in our life. There we’ll think about everything we have seen and experienced. What have we gathered in that backpack of our life journey as memories?

The places where the journey in this book starts and ends symbolize the beginning and end of life. The child sets off excitedly and curiously, meets people, gains experiences, and learns about life. He has a lot to wonder about and understand. It takes a person’s entire life to go through all of this.

I wrote this story at a very special time in my life. My dear father had just become seriously ill, and we knew that his life’s journey was coming to an end. Although the travels in the story are based on my own experiences, my father was always strongly in my mind when I wrote this book.

It may sound strange, but reading this book has helped some people in their grief when they have just said their last goodbye to a loved one.

Was there anything in this book that was inspired by your own travels?

Most events are based on my experiences and feelings during my European trips. Especially during interrail as a young student, I could walk alone for weeks in strange places and meet so many different people. It was essential to know whom you could trust.

In this fairy tale, I don’t name places in any way, not even countries. However, the reader may guess some.

Leo’s journey follows the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela. He joins the builders of Gaudí church, the Sagrada Familia, in Barcelona. In another mighty church, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, he lights candles and listens to wonderful music. He experiences the same hospitability in Budapest as I did when staying at the home of some amazingly warm and friendly people. In addition, Leo climbs the same fortress hill in Jaén, Spain, as Napoleon’s troops used to – and I have done with my family.

In this book, I take the boy also to see Venice before everything beautiful sinks into the waves – deep in similar thoughts that I had decades ago. And the author he meets at the fountain is the famous Nobel prize winner Jose Saramago, whom I also once happened to meet on the street in Spain, where he was involved in a big cultural project.

I have woven into the story so much of my ponderings about what is beautiful, valuable, and worth preserving that the book is almost like my spiritual testament. And still, it is a fairy tale journey – one with very little money, valuable experiences, and plenty of memories to take home.

What were some creative themes that were important for you to include in this book?

The main themes of this book are actually quite serious. Leo’s story deals with the importance of people to each other – the possibility of meeting and being connected on many levels. The best links between people are built directly between hearts and remain there even though times and places change.

Now, this leads us to more creative elements in the story. The beauty of nature, music or architecture, and other forms of art create unique connections to many places and environments. In addition to connecting people here and now, they can build bridges even between different periods and eras in human societies. History and the present meet each other. We get to witness that miracle if we know how to look openly at the world around us.

When I travel, I often experience the magic of particular places. It feels like some deeper current of life is flowing through me and telling stories of the past. Perhaps this is precisely the feeling I have tried to convey in this story of Leo.

What scene in this book did you have the most fun creating?

As I already said, this book is actually quite genuine and serious. Although the places and people’s encounters are unique and beautiful, the description also contains a kind of wistfulness in the background of everything. This sadness comes from the feeling that everything is transient and can only be stored in memories. The most beautiful and meaningful things can be over in an instant, and one person’s life is just a fleeting moment in eternity.

But, maybe it’s worth highlighting also those points in the book’s events that made me smile. After all, this is a happy book!

I thought Leo’s visit to the cafe and barber shop in the narrow streets of the old town was funny, even though there were dark clouds hanging over the characters. Illustrator Andrea Alemanno made the scene vivid and hopeful. The long list of concerns for entrepreneurs is first on the table, but then they start taking care of the needs of the young customer, Leo. The boy gets treats, and his hair is cut right away. The illustration is excellent, and it portrays the characters well!

Another scene that makes me feel good and light is the gathering of local families in a coastal town. Leo, a visiting wanderer, is taken in without any problems, even though no one knows him. He is offered food just like families’ own children. As I thought about the scene, I could hear in my mind how people joined in singing together with a gentle guitar accompaniment.

Among the writer’s privileges and unique opportunities are creating any kind of fantasy persons, situations, or views and getting to enjoy them yourself. It feels like living many lives at once!

Author Links: Facebook | Website

The wind magically whispers greetings from foreign lands into Leo’s ear. Excited, the little wanderer sets off for a long journey.
Along the way Leo sees many wonders of the world, and meets kind people who are willing to lend a hand, even to a perfect stranger. An old writer also teaches Leo to listen, and pay close attention to the messages that people reveal beyond their words.
At last the little wanderer returns home, wiser and content.
