Helping Children Be Better Humans

Joan Enockson Author Interview

Moonbeam’s Halloween Wish follows a lonely stray cat looking for a family who crosses paths with a girl dressed as a black cat, instantly forming a connection, and hoping that she has found her forever home. What was the inspiration for your story?

I wanted to write a Halloween story that wasn’t scary, and since I have an adopted cat, the idea of incorporating the concept of adoption was appealing to me.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

All of my books include lessons to help children be better humans, and in this book, I combined adoption and caring for those who are lonely as the primary concepts.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Taylor Johnston?

Taylor is an extremely talented artist and a close coworker. She is also a cat owner and works daily with kids, as I do, so her understanding of the concepts I wanted to portray was seamless. Taylor is also a highly creative individual and brought fresh ideas to her illustrations that I hadn’t thought of. We started with ideas that I had in mind, and after a few tweaks, the book was finished. We collaborated very well.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

I am currently working on a book about a Tulip. It is targeted for ages 6-8, and the theme will be attractive to towns that present tulip festivals.

Be True To Ourselves – Always

K.M. Selvidge Author Interview

Kloe’s New Start follows a young cat excited for her first day at a new school who becomes caught up in her troublemaking brother’s drama. Where did the idea for this story come from?

The idea for the story came from my personal difficulties of going to the same school at the same time as my older sibling who has mental health issues. He was supposed to have graduated a year prior to my starting this high school but was held back. It created a lot of personal and emotional circumstances that were very hard to deal with as a high school freshman. A new school with new people – I was so hopeful that I would blend in and stand on my own two feet but that wasn’t the case. As in the story, it was found out fairly quickly that we were related.

Which scene did you have the most fun writing?

The last chapter. It was fun to write because although it was one of the most difficult high school years of my life, it was also a great way to internally come to terms – as much as one can at 14 – with who I was wihtin myself. It was an awakening to realize that it really is ok to be different from everyone else. That you bring your own personality and talents to those who really matter in your life – your true freinds and family.

Is there anything from your own childhood included in the characters in this story?

Yes, alot was taken from my own personal story. I wanted to let others who may be struggling with their own anxieties about who they are or where they came from understand that things will turn out well in the end through persistence. We are not alone. We should and need to be true to ourselves – always. This will lead to the best outcome for our future selves.

Can young readers look forward to more books featuring Kloe? What are you currently working on?

They definitaly can! Book 2 is in the works that will go a little deeper with what Kloe had to deal with within her own family as she grew up with mental illness setting a tone in her home. I’ll be creating more stories that will hopefully come out shortly that offer other anecdotes of life within Kloe’s World.

Kloe can’t wait to get started at her new school… but when her brother Wreny starts acting out, will she end up stuck in his shadow? Or will she be able to make her own way and make others see her for who she truly is?

Kloe’s New Start

K. M. Selvidge’s Kloe’s New Start is a heartwarming tale of resilience, individuality, and determination. It follows Kloe, a young cat brimming with excitement for her first day at a new school. With dreams of making friends and trying out for the cheerleading team, Kloe’s journey begins on a hopeful note. However, her enthusiasm is soon tested when her mischievous brother Wreny stirs up trouble, pulling her into his whirlwind of chaos. As Kloe navigates these challenges, readers are drawn into a captivating story of a girl fighting to carve her own path against the odds.

Kloe’s character is endearing and relatable. Her sweetness and determination shine as she strives to follow her dreams, even while grappling with her brother’s disruptive antics and the disheartening favoritism of her parents. The emotional depth of her struggle resonates, making it impossible not to root for her success. Equally inspiring are her loyal friends, who encourage her to persevere despite the negativity around her. The gallant “Sir Petey” is particularly memorable, adding a touch of humor and charm to the narrative.

At its core, the story champions the importance of staying true to oneself, no matter how daunting the obstacles. The book is brought to life with vibrant illustrations by Kateryna Meleshchuk. Every page is adorned with artwork that complements the story’s warmth and energy, enhancing the reader’s immersion in Kloe’s world. The narrative builds to a satisfying conclusion, leaving readers inspired as Kloe takes steps toward a brighter future.

If there’s one critique, it’s that the book feels too short. The world of Kloe and her adventures is rich with potential, and it’s easy to imagine her story expanding into a full-length novel. This snapshot, however, is a delightful introduction to her universe and a testament to the empowering message of pursuing one’s dreams.

Perfect for readers aged 7 and up, Kloe’s New Start is a deeply personal and uplifting story. It celebrates overcoming challenges and staying true to oneself, making it a perfect choice for anyone who loves positive, character-driven tales. This brief but impactful journey through Kloe’s world leaves readers longing for more adventures with her and her friends, promising a wealth of future stories to come.

This visual feast makes the book especially appealing to young readers, while parents and educators will appreciate its subtle but powerful message about empathy and open-mindedness.

Acknowledge Those Who Matter

Haelee P. Moone Author Interview

Everyday Heroes: Real People, True Heroes follows a teacher and her class who are learning about and celebrating the everyday heroes in their lives that inspire them. The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Arsalan Khan?

My dad and I began working with Arsalan in the summer of 2021. He’s become our preferred illustrator for all our projects since that time. We consistently choose him and recommend him to others because of his amazing ability to bring words to life through his illustrations. His patience while we refine our stories and request revisions is exceptional. Additionally, he has corrected errors in illustrations from other illustrators that we worked with prior to meeting him at minimal cost.

I collaborated with children at Casa Esperanza Montessori to create the manuscript for Everyday Heroes. My dad contacted Arsalan to see if he could illustrate the book while I continued to work on the manuscript. Arsalan agreed to fit it into his schedule. We provided him with the manuscript, specifying the characters’ makeup, and left the rest to his creative vision. He returned with a storyboard featuring all the characters, which we reviewed and approved after a few iterations. As always, Arsalan exceeded our expectations in both creativity and timeliness. We not only paid for his work but also gave him a generous tip for exceeding our expectations.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

I wanted to express that my dad has been my personal hero throughout my childhood and teenage years. Additionally, I wanted to emphasize that a hero doesn’t have to be a parent or someone who wears a cape. A hero is anyone who cares for you or holds significance in your life. My message to the children reading Everyday Heroes is to appreciate and acknowledge those who matter while they are still around. Also, take note of as many lessons as they try to teach you along the way while you can.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

I’m currently working on a poetry book that explores my journey from childhood to adulthood, reflecting on love, life, and personal struggles. I plan to release this book after graduating high school next summer, with the anticipated release date set for June 9, 2025.

Everyday Heroes by Halee P Moone is a touching collection of stories that revolves around Ms. Patrice, a beloved teacher at Castle Academy. Ms. Patrice has a special knack for making each of her students feel valued and unique. For National Hero Day, she challenges her students to write essays about their personal heroes. To inspire them, she shares her own heartfelt story about why her dad is her hero, recounting cherished memories like their playful times together, adventurous outings, and the unforgettable day they rescued kittens. Through these personal narratives, Ms. Patrice imparts a valuable lesson: heroes are not just fictional characters like Batman but can be found in everyday life.

One of the most striking features of this charming kid’s book is its ability to connect emotionally with readers through simple yet profound storytelling. The writing style is engaging and accessible, making it easy for readers to relate to the characters and their experiences. Ms. Patrice’s story about her father is particularly moving, illustrating how small, loving actions can leave a lasting impact. The way she vividly describes their adventures and the kitten rescue scene brought a warm, nostalgic feeling, reminding me of my own childhood heroes. The book excels in showcasing the diversity of heroism. Ms. Patrice’s message to her students—that anyone can be a hero—resonates throughout the collection. The emphasis on ordinary people doing extraordinary things is both inspiring and humbling, encouraging readers to recognize and celebrate the heroes in their own lives. The illustrations immerse the reader in the story, making it the perfect book to discuss with young readers.

Everyday Heroes is a delightful and uplifting read that emphasizes the significance of recognizing the everyday acts of kindness and bravery around us. It’s an excellent choice for readers who enjoy inspirational stories and want to be reminded of the good in the world. Whether you’re looking for a heartwarming escape or a deeper appreciation for the heroes in your life, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression.

One-Of-A-Kind

James Breznicky Author Interview

In A Cat Named Puppy, a cat teased for his unusual name finds support from his brother and learns that his worth is not determined by others. Where did the idea for this story come from?

My real-life cat named Puppy was the inspiration. I wanted a dog but a friend of my brother’s cat just had a litter of kittens and she had to get rid of the kittens fast because her little girl was allergic to kitten hair so I took a cat instead of getting a dog. And I got my other cat Stitch about a year later.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Well, the real-life Puppy always had to deal with people commenting on his name and his weight he was a big boy. So I figured I could incorporate them into a story for children. And the idea is that although comments will be made in life as long as you realize you are special and one-of-a-kind. That should make you feel pretty good about yourself.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

When he chased the toy cars because he liked chasing hot wheel cars when he was younger. But all the scenes are special as Stitch passed away in July of 2023, and Puppy passed away in January 2024. It just makes the book more special to me.

What is next for Puppy? Do you have more books planned?

Well, I currently have a few like early reader first chapter book series they are A Cat Named Puppy Goes To School, A Cat Named Puppy Halloween Adventure, and A Cat Named Puppy And The Christmas Mystery. And I am currently working on another children’s book and it will be A Cat Named Puppy Learns About Colors.
