A Vague Idea Turns Into a Series
Posted by Literary_Titan

Sara’s Fear follows a girl and her family as they find their lives upended with the appearance of supernatural powers. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I started this story for my daughter when she was seven or eight. The story was only a vague idea about a twelve-year-old girl having troubled dreams caused by terror goblins feeding on her nightmares. Her story was one of overcoming her fears in life so she could defeat the goblins in her dreams. Unfortunately, at chapter six, the book got put on hold and languished for years. Some life events gave me the push to finish it, but it had to be finished fast, so I sat down and finished the rough draft in about two weeks. Except for the dreams, most of the original story went away and everything else was written on the fly.
What is the most difficult part of setting out to write a series?
Honestly, just sitting down and doing it. Bits and pieces of stories run through my head constantly while I’m doing other things. Coming up with story ideas is easy and writing a short story isn’t too bad, but writing a book or series, it’s difficult. If I can’t “fall” into the story while I’m writing, it just doesn’t work. It’s a hyper-focus thing. Finding two or three hours to sit and write distraction-free is tough for me.
What part of Sara’s Fear was the most fun to write?
Tough one. I enjoy writing the action parts. Picking the sequences apart in my head and trying to put words down so they paint the same picture for the reader is a challenge. I also enjoy the intense personal parts between the characters in the stories. Trying to step outside myself and look at how someone else may react to a situation and then put it to words is just as challenging.
Can we get a glimpse inside the second installment of the Elementals series?
After being beaten with ease by an enemy they don’t know, Sara and family are scattered and on the run. They are attacked constantly by an unknown group while they race across the country to reunite with each other. At the same time, Sara is learning to control explosive new powers before they destroy her. Who’s after Sara, why, and can they find the strength to stand against them? Book 2 “Sara’s Anger” is out now.

Untangling the Lies
Posted by Literary-Titan

Anemone follows a sixteen-year-old boy living in the mid-60s who is unable to rescue his brother from a burning house fire and must find the real arsonist or be charged with homicide. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
In the mid-60s, a friend in my class, whom I knew had abuse issues at home, supposedly burned down his house and was never seen again. The mystery of his disappearance has stayed with me, and I wanted to use it as a starting point. After much back and forth, I also wanted ANEMONE to blur the lines between the personal and the elemental, to weave the inner turmoil of its characters with the larger forces of nature, creating an almost mystical connection between the two. Russell’s journey toward uncovering the truth about the fire—and, by extension, the truth about himself—mirrors the unpredictable, sometimes violent forces of the sea that surrounds him.
A lot of time was spent crafting the character traits in this novel. What was the most important factor for you to get right in your characters?
Probably the innocent naivete of the main characters, what these people were really like. Too many 16-year-olds in books over the years seem to have a social intelligence, maturity, and a use of language that betrays their youth. Yes, there are moments in my characters when they demonstrate a certain cleverness and knowledge, but I find that most of the time they are guided by their lack of experience and gut feelings – they make terrible mistakes, they see through things without even knowing it, and they have a directness and level of honesty that I think is refreshing, and I hope, moving.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Abuse, friendship/loyalty, loneliness, and forced isolation, the need to find out the truth, and the fact that we all have to spend a considerable part of our lives untangling the lies we are told.
What is the next book that you are working on and when can your fans expect it to be out?
My book of poems, THIEF OF LAUGHTER, will be published in early 2025.

After his failed rescue of his brother Wyatt in a suspicious house fire, sixteen-year-old Russell Cobb wakes up from a coma, strangely mistaken for him and thrust into the middle of an arson investigation. Russell’s only hope, before his bandages come off, is to deduce the likeliest suspect in his troubled past or risk being charged with homicide. In view of his brother’s death, he begins to see his family, Wyatt’s enigmatic girlfriend Edie, and a school gang in a darker light, colored by deceit and possibly his own paranoia, until Edie turns the tables, tying his brother to an unimaginable crime.
Set against the idyllic backdrop of Aqua Verde, a mid-60s California beach town, ANEMONE addresses society at a moral crossroads when what went on behind closed doors was nobody’s business. Russell flees to a condemned seaside hotel where he joins a draft-dodging surfer, and later, a fugitive Edie, with whom he falls in love. Through a tangle of twists and traumatic revelations, and mentored by the surfer, Russell discovers more than he could have bargained for about her, his family, and the real target of the fire.
Brutal, gripping, and tragic, ANEMONE is a coming-of-age tale that deals with issues still relevant today. At its core is betrayal, emotional survival, and revenge within two ordinary families whose misdeeds bring about a reckoning from which no one emerges unscathed.

Nameless vs the Army of the Dead: Book one of the Nameless Saga
Posted by Literary Titan

Set against the backdrop of the 19th-century Victorian era, Nameless vs. The Army of the Dead by Brett Comeau immerses readers in the beleaguered city of Geneva. Amidst the nightly terror inflicted by the enigmatic Darklings, who mercilessly target the impoverished, a unique hero emerges. This nameless, deformed youth, embodying resilience and bravery, stands as a beacon of hope during these harrowing times. Alongside two loyal companions, he confronts the Darklings, striving to unveil their sinister motives and protect the city.
Brett Comeau’s novel is a masterful blend of horror and adventure, paced with riveting momentum. The protagonist, though unnamed, captivates with his charismatic presence, making him a character readers will enthusiastically support. This narrative is a treasure for aficionados of the macabre, showcasing exemplary world-building skills and enthralling action sequences.
While primarily a young adult novel, this book ventures into the realms of Stephen King-esque gore and Gothic horror. The heart of the story lies in the profound friendship among the youthful trio, who display remarkable maturity and resolve in contrast to the ineffectual and divided adults of Geneva.
Comeau skillfully leads the narrative to a climactic unraveling of the mystery behind the Darklings’ reign of terror. The finale is brilliantly executed, leaving an indelible mark in the realm of young adult fiction with its ingenious and mind-bending resolution. Nameless vs. The Army of the Dead is not just a thrilling read but an exploration of courage, camaraderie, and the fight against overwhelming darkness.
