Prioritize Self-love

James Bass Author Interview

In Love with My 5 Wives presents an unflinching memoir that navigates the tumultuous waters of a life marred by abuse and the challenging journey toward personal redemption. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Great question. This book was important for me to write because it sheds light on issues that many men may not even realize affect them on a subconscious level. I wanted to draw a parallel and connect the dots between child abuse, race, and mental illness.

Many men might carry the weight of past traumas without fully understanding how these experiences shape their behaviors and emotions. Child abuse, for example, often leaves deep scars that can influence every aspect of a man’s life. It’s crucial to acknowledge these impacts openly, so men can begin to heal and move forward.

Mental illness and race are also critical topics that need more attention, especially among men, who might feel pressure to appear strong and unaffected. By sharing my wife’s battle with psychosis and my own struggles with child abuse, race and mental illness, I aim to destigmatize these conversations and encourage men to seek help when needed.

In connecting these themes, I hope to provide a comprehensive view of how interconnected and complex these issues are. My goal is to inspire men to reflect on their own lives, recognize the impact of their experiences, and understand that the abuse they suffered doesn’t define their identity and healing is possible.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

Another great question but I have to answer it in two parts:

First, it was incredibly challenging for me to revisit the abuse and torture I endured during my childhood. Despite the years that have passed and the numerous lectures I’ve given, it remains a difficult topic to discuss and, in this case, write about. Writing about my childhood abuse forced me to confront painful memories that I had long tried to put behind me. Each word I wrote felt like peeling back layers of old wounds, which was emotionally exhausting. It was a process that required me to relive some of the darkest moments of my life, which was anything but easy.

Similarly, detailing my wife’s struggles with psychosis was heart-wrenching. Her auditory, visual, tactile and command hallucinations were vivid and terrifying, and they often left her, and me, feeling helpless and lost. Writing about those times brought back a flood of emotions and memories. It was a sobering reminder of the fragile line between health and illness, and the impact it had on our lives was profound.

The process of sharing these topics was therapeutic in many ways, but it also reopened old wounds. There were many nights when I found myself overwhelmed with emotion, unable to sleep because the memories were so vivid. Despite the difficulty, I knew that sharing my story was important. It was my way of reaching out to others who might be going through similar experiences, offering them a sense of hope and understanding.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

One of the main ideas I wanted to convey was the idea that we are never too old to change. Life often throws challenges our way, and sometimes those challenges come in the form of deep wounds from past childhood experiences. It’s crucial to recognize that healing is always possible, no matter our age or the length of time we’ve carried our burdens.

Another important idea I wanted to share is that past does not define us; rather, it shapes us and contributes to our unique strengths. Each individual who has endured any form of abuse often underestimates their own resilience. The very fact that we’ve survived and continued to move forward demonstrates our profound inner strength.

The healing journey is personal and different for everyone, but it’s important to remember that it’s never too late to start. Every step taken towards healing is a testament to our courage and our capacity for growth.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?

One thing I hope readers take away from my story is that love, particularly self-love, is an incredibly transformative force that has the power to heal wounds from the past. When we cultivate self-love, we begin a journey that allows us to address and mend the emotional scars we carry.

Self-love involves recognizing our worth and treating ourselves with kindness and compassion. This practice enables us to forgive ourselves for past mistakes and allows us to move forward with a sense of peace and empowerment. By embracing self-love, we create a safe space within ourselves where healing can take place.

Ultimately, when we love ourselves, we set a powerful example for others. By prioritizing self-love, we unlock the ability to overcome past hurts, help mend broken relationships, and face the future with confidence and hope.

In the riveting pages of ‘In Love with My 5 Wives,’ we follow the harrowing life journey of a young boy of mixed heritage, trapped in a relentless storm of abuse, abandonment, and identity crisis. James, the brown-skinned child, found himself cast aside by both his Mexican-American mother and African-American father, left to grapple with the torment of not fitting into either world. He was too black for one side, not black enough for the other, and inherently, too ‘black’ for a society that struggles to understand and accept diversity.
Within the confines of his fractured family, James endured a nightmarish gauntlet of verbal, mental, physical, and emotional abuse, inflicted upon him by two stepfathers and his own mother. But this is more than just a tale of suffering; it’s a story of resilience and transformation. James battles the torment, turmoil, and pitfalls of his tumultuous childhood, determined to rise above his past, embrace his own identity, and become a man capable of love and compassion.
‘In Love with My 5 Wives’ takes us on a 33-year odyssey through James’ life, a journey that carries him from the role of victim to that of the abuser and ultimately transforms him into a man who discovers the power of love and redemption. In the twilight of a 28-year relationship, James’s life takes an unexpected turn as he becomes the savior of the woman he loves, breaking free from the cycle of abuse to become a better man, husband, and human being.

In Love with MY 5 Wives

In Love with My 5 Wives by James Bass presents an unflinching memoir that navigates the tumultuous waters of a life marred by abuse and the challenging journey toward personal redemption. James, a man of mixed racial heritage with an African-American father and a Mexican-American mother, details his lifelong struggle to carve out a sense of identity against a backdrop of enduring hardship. From the adversities of his early childhood to the complexities of his adult relationships, Bass’s narrative is a raw and revealing exploration of the cyclical nature of trauma—hurt people, indeed, often hurt others.

Bass’s account is as much a confessional as it is an examination of a life filled with poignant and painful moments. The narrative draws parallels to the novel “Push” by Sapphire, where, like its protagonist, Bass emerges both as a figure of resilience and as deeply flawed. His story offers a vivid testament to the unforgettable impact of one’s environment on personal development. Despite the often harrowing details of his experiences, Bass provides the reader with a narrative infused with moments of genuine hope and transformation.

This book challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about the consequences of abuse while also affirming the profound capacity for human resilience. Bass’s journey toward healing and self-improvement underscores a powerful message: one’s past does not have to define the future. Bass exemplifies the potential for renewal and growth through his efforts to transcend his circumstances and embrace the possibility of love and connection. In Love with My 5 Wives is not just Bass’s story—it is a broader call to reflect on our own capacities to overcome and evolve, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in the dynamics of personal change and redemption.

The Victorious Vagina – How To Beat A Player At His Game & Win At Self Love

Katie Slade’s The Victorious Vagina takes readers on a journey through the highs and lows of modern relationships. Framed as a series of poems preceded by narrative segments, this memoir delves into the emotional rollercoaster experienced by a woman navigating the complexities of love and intimacy in today’s dating landscape. Through her book, Slade underscores the importance of self-love and caution in romantic engagements, offering a candid exploration of her own vulnerabilities and triumphs.

Slade’s writing style is both raw and evocative, adeptly capturing the fervor and despair of her relationships. While the directness of Slade’s language and the rich detail of her personal anecdotes are vivid and engaging, they create an immersive reading experience that vividly brings her emotional journey to life, allowing readers to feel a deep connection with her. The integration of narrative with poetry enriched the text and allowed me to deeply connect with the emotional context behind each poem. The themes are universal, but the execution feels distinctly personal, sometimes bordering on a diary-like confessional.

The Victorious Vagina presents intriguing ideas about gender dynamics, emotional labor, and the societal pressures shaping romantic interactions. I think Slade challenges the reader to reconsider what it means to engage in modern love, pushing against the commodification of intimacy.

Katie Slade’s memoir is a passionate call for self-empowerment in the realm of dating and relationships. I recommend it to readers who appreciate a straightforward and heartfelt exploration of personal growth and resilience. Those who enjoy poetic narratives that are deeply personal and anyone navigating the intricate world of modern relationships will find this book particularly resonant.

You Are Enough

Sarah Jolicoeur Author Interview

Journey to Paradise is more than just a memoir; it is a guide to help others who are struggling to rebuild their self-esteem and find the kind of relationship that works for them, even if it is not traditional. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Simply put, I want to de-stigmatize non-traditional relationships and let readers know they are not alone when they feel they are not enough. That may come in different forms for each individual person and I wanted to share my journey so others could find solace in knowing that “the norm” is just a grouping of words. To find happiness in any path you choose, you have to experiment, you need to get uncomfortable, and you must embrace communication. The human experience gives us unique opportunities but there is also a similarity in those trials and triumphs that binds us all together. There are lessons to learn from everywhere. How someone chooses to love is a very personal journey. Self-esteem issues are prevalent in our society and to overcome those limiting beliefs, reflecting on your own actions are the key to unlocking self-love. I wanted to write this book to show you have control on the way you view yourself and the dynamics of your relationships.

You share your emotional journey and the challenges you faced to get where you are now. What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

It’s okay to feel all the feelings. Acknowledge where you are today and discover what makes you tick. I had some challenging times but I had many more wonderful experiences. Being able to recognize those happy times helped me get through the rough patches, but that took lots of practice. Learning how to use my voice to speak up for myself, to verbalize what I needed, allowed me to move past the feelings of helplessness. You can’t control every situation, but you can control how you react. It took me many years to understand this concept. If I can help even one person learn this earlier than I did, I feel like I accomplished my goal in writing my story.

What is a common misconception you feel people have about ethical non-monogamy?

There are several that come to mind right off the bat, but I would say one of the most common misconceptions is that ethical non-monogamy (ENM) is just a phase until you find the right person. The idea of loving more than one person at a time is a hard concept for some to accept because we’ve been taught that you’ll eventually find “that special someone” who will make you want to settle down. The truth is that in most ENM dynamics, commitment to your partner/s is the core of the relationship. In order for the relationships to thrive, communication must be the focal point of everyday life to ensure everyone’s needs are met. In each dynamic there must be boundaries and parameters everyone agrees to. There is the same fundamental desire to make each partner feel fulfilled and loved. In my experiences with ENM versus monogamous relationships, there is a different level of connection within my ENM relationships because there are hard conversations that happen, and I have to acknowledge things about myself I wasn’t comfortable doing in monogamy. I do not mean that monogamy requires less communication or connection, it is just a different dynamic. I believe this particular misconception comes from a limited comprehension of our deepest levels of how to love. We try to fit different types of love into specific boxes but the reality is love is love; not everything has to fit into those boxes.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?

Be present in your journey—don’t miss out on the good things waiting for what you want in that moment. Be okay with who you are—you are enough, but have self-awareness so you can grow. Be okay saying you want something different than is expected of you. Take care of you, because no one else knows what’s in your heart. Speak up for yourself.

My hope is that people take away these themes, regardless of their relationship status: single, dating, polyamorous or monogamous. We all experience the same basic struggles, and we all deserve to find true love.

    Do Not Settle

    Katie Slade Author Interview

The Virtuous Vagina – How To Leave Lust In The Dust & Find Clarity Through Chastity shares with readers the importance of focusing on self-love and self-worth over finding the perfect partner in life by sharing your personal exsperances and your journey to self-empowerment. Why was this an important book for you to write?

This was an important book for me to write because I see so many women desperate to find a meaningful relationship and settling for the wrong guys.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

It’s so vital that we take good care of ourselves spiritually, mentally & physically. I want to remind women to prioritize these aspects of living. As women we often put everyone & everything before ourselves.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

At a young age, I made a decision that almost cost me my life. The poem that I wrote explains all that I went through, and because it is so personal, I wasn’t sure about including it in the book. In the end, I thought it was too perfect of an ending not to include it. None of my reviewers have commented on it, and I’ve been wondering if the message is getting through; I hope so.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?

I want women to see the necessity of building oneself. Tapping into our creative abilities, our intellect & our spirituality can build an incredible personal foundation of happiness. Society has taught us to believe that we will meet a knight in shining armor, but even if we do, a princess still has to bring something to the table. So why not set a beautiful table and enjoy the bounty whether the prince shows up or not!

Picking the right partner in life is never easy! In this book, her second memoir, Katie Slade expresses the importance of taking time to fully evaluate the intentions and life styles of potential suitors. In her first memoir, “The Victorious Vagina – How To Beat A Player At His Game & Win At Self Love”, Katie shares her experience of getting swept off her feet by Mr. GQ, a successful business hottie. When things don’t go as she had hoped with him, she finds herself being pursued by several guys, each with their own agenda. Steven, her professional, but promiscuous financial advisor who is more interested in getting her honey than her money! Elliot, the divorced, and doting doorman, who’s trying to open the door to her heart. Manny, the smart and sweet young buck, smittened by Katie’s brains and beauty. And Pierre, the incredibly handsome fitness trainer that has the hots for her even though he thinks she’s married.

Beginning in the summer and ending by New Year’s, join Katie season after season as she navigates life as a New York entrepreuneur, full time employeee and a woman vetting the advances of these men. Grounded in her spirituality, Katie provides detailed insight to the significance of not letting our egos guide our decision making, but instead paying keen attention to the reasons why someone may not be the right partner. She gives her readers real life experiences in New York City, the need to take the high road when working with dysfunctional colleagues, and pointing out the need to truly understand and pour into ourselves as women to achieve what we desire out of life. This memoir encourages women not to wait for Mr. Right to fullfill our dreams, but to be Miss Right whether he shows up or not!

The Virtuous Vagina – How To Leave Lust In The Dust & Find Clarity Through Chastity

In Katie Slade’s candid memoir The Virtuous Vagina, Slade shares her transformative journey from being dismissed from a 15-year career to bravely venturing into entrepreneurship. The story delves into the intricacies of her transition from a stable 9-to-5 job to the unpredictable realm of building her own business, notably through the development of a mobile app. Throughout the book, readers are privy to Slade’s personal evolution, marked by various encounters that shape her perspective on life, love, and self-worth.

The narrative touches on contemporary social dynamics, particularly regarding attitudes towards sex and relationships. The author contrasts the present-day openness around sexuality with past conservatism, highlighting a shift towards more liberal attitudes. Slade’s story becomes a conduit for discussing the challenges women face in modern dating landscapes, including navigating toxic relationships and societal pressures.

Slade shares her struggles with men who range from a detrimental ex-boyfriend to those with purely physical intentions, emphasizing the importance of self-respect and caution in romantic pursuits. A central theme of the book is the encouragement of chastity and self-empowerment for women. The author’s experiences serve as a mirror to the often tumultuous and demanding nature of contemporary dating, where encounters with narcissistic or manipulative partners are not uncommon. The narrative advocates for women to recognize their worth, resist being objectified, and cultivate strong personal and spiritual foundations. Slade emphasizes the significance of pursuing personal and professional success and seeking partners aligned with one’s values and beliefs. I found myself drawn to the story of an ambitious woman navigating these complex societal norms. Slade’s journey is not only about her entrepreneurial aspirations but also her stance against the diminishing regard for values like chastity and fidelity in today’s society.

The Virtuous Vagina – How To Leave Lust In The Dust & Find Clarity Through Chastity balances serious themes with moments of romance and humor, creating a multifaceted reading experience. Discovering that this book is part of a series was a pleasant surprise, and I am eager to continue following Katie Slade’s journey in subsequent installments. The narrative offers a thought-provoking reflection on modern social mores, corporate culture, and the pursuit of personal authenticity.
