Kick-Starting Adulthood

Maya Shine Author Interview

Actionable Life Skills for Young Adults provides readers with everything they need to tackle the challenging transition to adulthood. Why was this an important book for you to write?

I was raised by a single mother who didn’t have the time and resources to teach me the necessary life skills for a smooth transition into adulthood. So when I left home and found myself on a university campus in a foreign city, the shock was overwhelming. I practically cried every day because I found it emotionally demanding. I went from the comfort of a small town where everyone knew each other to a big city where nobody seemed to care about others. In addition to not knowing anyone and experiencing a cultural shock, I didn’t even know how to cook a meal, and resources were limited, so I couldn’t afford ready-made meals either. I struggled for many years to find my footing. I eventually succeeded, but I believe that if I had been prepared in advance, it would have been less challenging.

Knowing that there are many young people in this situation, and being a mother to a preteen, I wanted to write this book to do with my daughter what my wonderful mother couldn’t do with me. I aim to share this knowledge and my experiences hoping it can help other teens better manage this transition, which is supposed to be exciting rather than intimidating.

In Actionable Life Skills for Young Adults, you cover a wide variety of topics. What type of research was required for this book?

In the process of creating Actionable Life Skills for Young Adults, the research involved a combination of personal experiences and exploration of new responsibilities that young adults need to assume from the age of 18, such as the obligation to file income tax returns. The topics were also shaped by the questions commonly raised by young adults on social media and the concerns that adults, including parents, guardians, teachers, educators, and school counselors, have—such as what life skills their teens or young individuals in their school or community should learn to succeed in life.

Given the extensive range of topics to cover and the limitations on space within the book, the focus was on fundamental knowledge. As a result, the selected topics aimed at addressing the essential skills required to “kick-start” the exciting adventure of adulthood while encouraging readers to further investigate additional skills that align with their specific needs and goals, using the 5WH^2 method. This way, readers will not be limited by the book’s content since they are invited to explore new horizons with the assistance of trusted adults.

What is one thing you wish you had been told when you were making the jump from a teenager into an independent adult?

Learning to live within my means and make the most of the available resources.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

Puberty for girls. Hopefully, the book will be ready for Christmas.

There Are Always Two Sides To See

Brenda Hammon Author Interview

Sooo…How was your day? is a collection of true stories from moments in your life that could have been negative or positive, and you choose to see the positive message in them. What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

I wanted people to understand that things in life happen and how we choose to look at them makes a difference. Laughing at one’s self is great therapy.

What experience in your life has had the biggest impact on your writing?

That is a loaded question, many things happened in my life that turned in the direction of writing. The first was to right a wrong when I was a child and the second was how I wanted to view my own life. I wanted to look at things in a positive light instead of a negative one. There are always two sides to see.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?

I hope readers take away that things could be better or worse, that you can laugh at yourself, then maybe others can do this in their own experiences, and the cloud of doom and doubt can lift off their shoulders.

The stories that are in between the cover of the book are all true and I am amazed I survived them all. For me, there are two main ways to look at our stories and our past. We can either see it as a negative or we can see it as a positive event. I chose to see the positive and to see a humorous side to my life. Laughter is truly the best medicine in life.I wrote this book so that one day, when I am old and gray, I can have a good laugh at the things that I did. No doubt, I may likely have forgotten they happened all.I hope you enjoy each of the stories that I have shared with you, maybe there are a few lessons in there for you but maybe not. How you see life and how I see life are not the same, but I hope you laugh a little while you read each story.

Hike the Course

Hike the Course by Barbara Ann Cochran offers a unique glimpse into the world of competitive skiing and the mental fortitude required to excel in sports. Cochran, an Olympic gold medalist, draws from her own experiences and those of her siblings, Marilyn and Bob, collectively known as “the First American Family of Skiing.” The narrative details their early introduction to skiing under their father’s guidance, emphasizing the rigorous training and mental preparation that propelled them to the pinnacle of their sport. Cochran’s book delves into the techniques that helped her succeed, such as course rehearsal, physical training, and mindset strengthening. More than just a sports memoir, it provides valuable insights into mindfulness, visualization, goal setting, and habit formation. These elements are woven into an engaging narrative that extends beyond the realm of sports, offering universally applicable lessons on personal and professional growth.

For readers intrigued by the psychological aspects of competitive sports, Cochran’s candid account of her struggles with pressure and self-doubt is particularly compelling. She shares an instance of overcoming mental hurdles during a crucial competition, using affirmations to regain focus. This anecdote, among others, illustrates the importance of mental resilience in high-stakes environments. The book is a testament to the Cochrans’ dedication to skiing and serves as a practical guide, replete with worksheets and exercises designed to enhance mental strength. Its applicability extends beyond athletes, providing valuable insights for anyone aiming to excel in their respective fields. The lessons imparted are especially relevant for those striving to balance personal bests with external perceptions.

As a skiing enthusiast, I found Hike the Course both enlightening and inspiring. It bridges the gap between a sports biography and a motivational guide, making it a compelling read for anyone seeking to achieve excellence, whether in sports or other life pursuits. This book is highly recommended for individuals aspiring to realize their potential and for sports enthusiasts eager to understand the mental aspects of athletic achievement.

Actionable Life Skills for Young Adults: 11 Powerful Steps to Achieve Financial Independence and Kick-Start Your Road to Successful Adulthood, by Maya Shine, offers a comprehensive and practical roadmap for young individuals transitioning into adulthood. Shine delves into a variety of crucial topics, ranging from self-awareness and health to financial management and online security. Her approach to these subjects is thorough and encourages proactive engagement in one’s journey towards adulthood.

Shine has a talent for breaking down complex life skills into manageable segments, making the content accessible and relatable. The book is thoughtfully structured into 11 distinct sections, each focusing on a different facet of adult life. These sections are further divided into smaller chapters, providing in-depth discussion on specific elements within each broader topic. One of the book’s strengths lies in its universality. Despite some chapters discussing topics like student loans, which might not be directly relevant to all readers, the principles and insights offered are adaptable to various contexts. This versatility speaks to Shine’s skill in addressing a wide audience.

The book is not only informative but also motivational. It strikes a balance between being realistic about the challenges of adulthood and encouraging readers to be optimistic and proactive. Shine emphasizes the importance of essential life skills such as nutrition, tax management, health care, and financial stability. These skills are presented as foundations for a successful and balanced life, underscoring their value beyond immediate practicality. I found the book to be an enlightening experience. While not every scenario discussed was directly applicable to my life, the overall content was engaging and educational. Shine’s ability to articulate the common experiences and emotions of young adults is particularly effective. It creates a sense of solidarity and reassurance, motivating readers to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and to strive for personal growth.

Maya Shine’s book is a valuable resource for any young adult navigating the complexities of modern life. Deprogramming Victims of Brainwashing and Cult-Like Mind Control

Deprogramming Victims of Brainwashing and Cult-Like Mind Control is an insightful and meticulously detailed exploration of the intricate world of cult dynamics, psychological manipulation, and the challenging journey toward recovery. The author delves into the abyss of mind control with a precision that is as educational as it is captivating.

The book opens a window into the often misunderstood world of cults and their mind-control techniques. It’s structured in a way that systematically uncovers the layers of psychological manipulation employed by cult leaders, referred to as ‘subjugators.’ The meticulous breakdown of these strategies is an eye-opener. From emotional manipulation and isolation to the charismatic allure of the leaders, the book provides a comprehensive guide to understanding how individuals are drawn into and trapped within such environments.

One of the book’s strengths is its deep dive into the psyche of the victims. The exploration of their experiences, the cognitive dissonance they face, and the misplaced loyalty they often feel is handled with a sensitivity and depth that is both informative and empathetic. This section not only educates but also humanizes the victims, distancing the narrative from any simplistic or judgmental views.

A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the deprogramming techniques. This part is particularly intriguing as it shifts from the problem to the solution, offering a ray of hope amidst the dark subject matter. The detailed strategies and psychological counseling methods provided are not only a resource for professionals in the field but also offer valuable insights for anyone seeking to understand the process of recovery.

The book concludes with an insightful discussion of the recovery and aftermath for individuals who have escaped cult influence. This is where the book truly shines, providing not just a theoretical understanding but also practical guidelines for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

While I think the book is a valuable resource, I think that its intense focus on technicalities and in-depth analysis might be overwhelming for casual readers. It’s a dense read, that I think is more suited for those with a serious interest in psychology, deprogramming, or those directly affected by such experiences.

Deprogramming Victims of Brainwashing and Cult-Like Mind Control provides a deep look into the world of cults and psychological manipulation. Its detailed analysis, combined with a compassionate approach to the victims’ experiences, makes it an invaluable resource. It adeptly accomplishes its goal of shedding light on this dark and complex topic, guiding the reader through the labyrinth of mind control and out into the clarity of understanding and recovery. A must-read for those in the field and a highly recommended piece for anyone intrigued by the subject.

Sooo….How was Your day?

In Sooo…How was your day? Brenda Hammon invites readers into a series of personal anecdotes that span various facets of her life, including everyday experiences, vacations, horse shows, and even the development of her farm. Hammon’s storytelling is marked by a distinct perspective, offering more than the typical narrative and encouraging readers to see beyond the conventional black and white.

One notable tale involves her Anglo Trakehner gelding, Arion. Hammon’s portrayal of Arion’s personality and their dynamic is both amusing and relatable. She vividly recounts an incident where Arion, seemingly aware of his own charm, reacts to his discontent by flicking his tail to comically smack Hammon in the face. This description is so visually compelling that it provokes a genuine laugh as if the reader were witnessing the scene in person. Another memorable episode occurs during a family vacation to Mexico. Hammon’s first snorkeling experience turns comical as she grapples with her discomfort underwater. Her vivid description of panic and the humorous way she reacts to the sensation of being submerged paints a clear, entertaining picture. The narrative also takes a turn towards the absurd with a story about a neighbor’s donkey named Willy. Hammon’s humorous recounting of her attempts to chase Willy off her property, armed with nothing but a quad bike and a lunge whip, ends in an unexpected and humorous tumble. This story, like the others, unfolds with a sense of immediacy and humor that places the reader right in the midst of the action.

Sooo…How was your day? stands out not just for its humor but for the way Hammon brings readers into each scene, making them feel like active participants in her adventures. This book is a delightful read for anyone seeking a lighthearted and genuinely funny narrative journey. Brenda Hammon’s skill in weaving humor and vivid storytelling makes this book a refreshing and enjoyable read.

Happy, Accomplished, and Satisfied

Sarah Marie Park Author Interview

The Magical World of YOU! is more than a self-help book; it is an inspirational guide to help readers reach their full potential with advice and exercises to help them achieve their goals. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Throughout my teaching years, I received so much humbling feedback and gratitude from many different students following their successes.

I found this feeling and job satisfaction very rewarding.

Knowing you have helped someone to positively change their life really is what it’s all about.

Planning lessons and writing training manuals came so naturally to me, that I felt I could create something more person-focused (and permanent).

I felt that I had a ‘real’ book in me, so I decided that I was going to publish one and got to work on it right away.

I think it is important to share wisdom and tried/tested methods with others, especially if it means that more people can feel happy, accomplished, and satisfied with their own lives.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

The significance of being grateful for all of the good in your life.

The importance of seeing the lesson and/or message in each unfortunate situation that you face.

That you will get through the bad times and come out stronger on the other end.

That you can dream, believe, and achieve anything in life as long as you have faith, determination, and focus.

What is one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you were younger?

To not waste precious energy worrying or stressing over things that are out of your control. Where possible, just ‘brush it off, laugh, and get on with it.’

What is one thing that you hope readers take away from The Magical World of YOU!?

My aim is that every reader takes something positive away from The Magical World Of YOU! Whether this be a positive thought, feeling, or action… Every little step counts.
