Twins Mac & Madi’s Big Sister

In Twins Mac & Madi’s Big Sister, author Linda Herron, with illustrator Marie Delon, explores the emotional landscape of Molly, a child who often feels overshadowed by her younger twin sisters, Mac and Madi. The story delves into themes of sibling dynamics, individuality, and the importance of feeling seen and valued within a family.

Herron skillfully captures the essence of sibling rivalry while also presenting parents and children with poignant examples of unconditional love and the distinct connections shared among siblings. The narrative offers a realistic portrayal of the complexities and joys of family life, effectively resonating with both young readers and adults.

Marie Delon’s vibrant illustrations are a standout feature of this book. Her artwork vividly portrays Molly’s range of emotions – from frustration and jealousy to joy and acceptance. These illustrations complement the story’s text, which is crafted in rhyming verse. This stylistic choice ensures a smooth and engaging reading experience, particularly suited for lower elementary-level readers. The book is more than just a story; it’s a tool for families to explore and discuss the nuances of sibling relationships and personal identity. It serves as an excellent resource for parents seeking a meaningful shared-reading experience with their children, as well as for those interested in narratives that reinforce family bonds.

A Strong Sibling Bond

Deanna Bussadori Author Interview

Super Big Brother: Finding Your Hero follows a little girl who is inspired by her hero and Big Brother to spread kindness to others. What was the inspiration for your story?

I was inspired by my children and the strong sibling bond they showed for one another. Over the years, I studied their interaction while growing up and these observations grew into a ten-book series.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Building strong sibling connections became my focus and spreading messages of kindness, sharing, caring, and helping.

What experience in your life has had the biggest impact on your writing?

My family and having lived in four countries South Africa, England, Canada, and the USA, has impacted my views and my writing the most.

Will there be a follow-up story to this children’s book? If so, what can readers look forward to in the next story?

My second book in the series, Super Big Brother: The Big Brave School Day was released in October 2023 and my third book is due for release this year. The second book is all about Lulu the Little starting her first day of school and how Super Big Brother leads the way, introduces her to the teacher, and encourages her to be brave. Big Brother helps her through some challenges during the day and in the end shows her that she is the hero of the day.

Super Big Brother: Finding Your Hero is told primarily through the toddler eyes of Lulu the Little, who sees her big brother, Super Sam, as her hero with his red cape always flowing behind as he helps her through daily family tasks and lessons about growing up. Super Sam can swim fast, climb high, and swing through the sky. He always saves the day whether he is helping, sharing, or showing kindness. He is the best Super Big Brother ever! Lulu the Little wishes she could be just like him.

Super Big Brother: Finding Your Hero

Super Big Brother: Finding Your Hero, by Deanna Bussadori, is a delightful narrative that celebrates the essence of everyday heroism through the lens of sibling love. The story revolves around Lulu the Little and her adoration for her big brother, Super Sam. Their day-to-day interactions, from morning reading sessions to evening playtimes, are beautifully depicted, underscoring the profound yet simple ways in which a sibling can be a hero.

As someone who deeply appreciates the world of superheroes, I found this book particularly resonant. It skillfully explores the virtues and values that define true heroism, far beyond the realms of capes and superpowers. The narrative struck a chord with me, echoing the cherished bond I share with my own brothers. Super Sam embodies the real-life superhero traits of patience, gentleness, and kindness, inspiring both his sister and readers to embrace these qualities.

The illustrations in Super Big Brother, crafted by Blueberry Illustrations, are vivid and captivating. An engaging element is the playful “find the teddy” challenge on each page, which adds an interactive dimension to the reading experience.

This book is a heartwarming exploration of the power of the heart and the impact of virtuous actions. It’s an excellent choice for a range of readers, from young children to adults, making it a versatile addition to any bookshelf. Ideal for shared reading experiences, whether with a parent or a ‘super-sibling,’ this book is a fine tool for early readers.

Super Big Brother: Finding Your Hero stands out as an endearing tale that highlights the importance of virtue in everyday life and celebrates the unique bond between siblings. Its focus on real-life heroism, combined with charming illustrations, makes it a memorable read for anyone looking to discover the hero within.

A Story About Love And Acceptance

Newton Vanriel Author Interview

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas: or How the Sisters Changed the World, follows the lives of two people who want to have a family and end up adopting two baby girls of different races.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Monique Ra Brent?

It was an amazing collaboration in terms of her vision was exactly mine – a story about love and acceptance in a world that judges. We went through the process picture by picture to get the right “soul” of the book. She had painted a picture of my wife 7 years ago – thus began the discussion of working on the book

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

For me…this is more than promoting a book. It is a movement of acceptance. I see young and old people relating to this book – I have heard people say “I see myself in this book.” I had done research before the book – for it to be sensitive to the adoption community.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out and what can your fans expect in the next story?

It is my first book – I am currently completing the second book – for end of year/new year (a comic look-superhero book)

Charm and Dawn are soul sistas from the heart. They share everything and have the best adventures on their Spirit family farm. When their parents, Alexandra and Nathan, adopted them from birth—first Charm, then Dawn—the two girls were by each other’s sides from day one.

But living in a rural town, not everyone saw the true beauty of the Spirit family. Polite but distant, the town was wary of a Black family with two diverse daughters—one Black and one white. Charm and Dawn, though, knew that this was really a superpower, and they created their own world to show others how great it is to be part of the soul sista’s dynamics.

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas celebrates diversity and the true meaning of family through the eyes of two wonderful superheroes.

May is National Pet Month

 Victoria Winifred Author Interview

Murray the Cat follows an intelligent and caring cat who finds the perfect family to adopt; he just has to convince them. I think this original idea is intriguing. How did you come up with this idea and develop it into a story?

This book was inspired by a very special cat that adopted our household years ago. While names and the narrative are fictionalized to a certain extent, many of the events depicted are based on actual happenings. The family’s initial reluctance to take in the cat and Murray’s tenacity are both factual. The twist of the plot is also truth-based. I’m pleased that this book was published in time for “National Pet Month,” which is the month of May in the United States!

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Tammy Brown?

I spotted Tammy Brown’s brilliant work several years ago when I first started writing this book. It was the art in her own book, “Herman the Mouse,” that convinced me she was the perfect illustrator for the job. When my text was ready, I contacted her. Tammy is so patient and talented; each beautiful watercolor illustration in my book was planned and discussed in detail. She was able to incorporate many elements that were of great importance to me, such as the pinkness of Murray’s belly, and subtle details indicating how the cat brought harmony to his new family. Also, because of the followers that my previous book, “The Princess, the Knight, and the Lost God: A Chess Story” is still sending my way, I made sure the presence of chess was included in Murray’s new home (also fact-based!)

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Although it is a sweet story for kids, there is an important point in the plot’s backstory for adults. You’ll find a brief mention in the book that a different family had previously adopted Murray from a shelter. What I’d like to share is that although the home with three kids and many other animals was not Murray’s dream home, it was still preferable to the fate an older and large cat like Murray would face in a shelter if not adopted at all. But every shelter has its own rules; some will not give an animal to a family with young children. Many insist there can be no possibility of certain animals ever going outside (regardless of the setting), and they often require that someone be home an unreasonable number of hours every day. These and other stringent rules result in many animals never being placed, and a very sad ending for them may follow. That is why a portion of royalties for this book will be donated to Nathan Winograd’s nokilladvocacycenter.org. This organization provides solid support and a step-by-step guide for animal shelters to vastly improve their pet placement rate. Mr. Winograd, from whom an introductory quote is included in my book, has spent decades of work in this sphere. His successful efforts might be the very reason that “Murray” had a chance to find us and bless our lives with his presence.

What is the next adventure that Murray will be going on?

When the family finally moves cross-country with Murray, he’ll be in for some fun and different experiences that will be sure to tickle your fancy!

Murray the Cat finds the family of his dreams and eagerly sets out to adopt them. But Charlie and Emma’s parents aren’t convinced it’s the right time for a pet. Just when things start to improve, someone from Murray’s past returns and complicates his plan. But Murray still won’t give up, because his new family needs him as much as he needs them!

With a delightful balance of sweetness, humor, and heart, this early chapter book follows the unique journey of an older feline who is determined to claim his chosen home. Tammy Brown’s vivid and nuanced watercolor illustrations beautifully capture the essence of Victoria Winifred’s charming story.

A portion of the proceeds earned for this book will be donated to Nathan Winograd’s Advocacy Center, which provides support and a step-by-step guide for animal shelters to vastly improve their placement rate.

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas: or How the Sisters Changed the World

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas: or How the Sisters Changed the World, is a wonderfully written story that teaches children about the beauty of adoption and multicultural families. In this heartwarming children’s book, two people, Alexandra and Nathan Spirit, find themselves living on a farm in the country, way out of their comfort zone. They want to have a family but are unable, and through some extraordinary circumstances, they wind up with the chance to adopt not one but two little girls. So in this small rural town, this unique family with two Black parents, one white child, and one Black child face constant looks and were not included in many events. How will the sisters handle heading off to school when it is time?

Author Newton Vanriel has written a fantastic book about adoption and the challenges that raising a multicultural family can face. In addition, while not biologically twins, the girls are so close in age that they act like twins. This story covers many topics parents sometimes find hard to explain to young children. This book is written in a way that is perfect for reading together and opening up discussions. It is broken up so that it is easy to stop and talk about the different situations that come up. I love the little poems that are included as well. They are like a summary and motivational lesson, all in a couple of lines summarizing the topic on the page before it. The artwork by Monique Ra Brent is bright and colorful; it will appeal to children and bring a smile to those reading this captivating story.

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas: or How the Sisters Changed the World, is an inspiring story for children struggling with fitting in, that are adopted, or who come from mixed families. The world is full of exciting and different people, and family comprises the people you love and support you. Sisters do not have to look alike, and diversity is a beautiful thing.

Murray the Cat: First Adventures

Book Review

Murray the Cat by Victoria Winifred is a delightful read that follows the story of Murray, a charming feline. Charlie and Emma, two siblings, long for a pet, but their parents feel it is not the right time, as they are in the midst of moving, and adding a pet will only add to their stress. However, fate intervenes, and as they return home from school, they encounter a magnificent striped cat in their driveway. Charlie and Emma plead with their parents to keep the cat, but their request is declined. Murray, however, eventually wins over the parents and becomes a cherished member of the family. The heart of the story follows Murray’s owner’s attempts to reclaim him, while Murray resists and longs to stay with Charlie and Emma.

Murray the Cat is a heartwarming tale of two children who embrace Murray into their lives and hearts. The story captures the adorable moments when Emma mentions to her father that Murray takes away the stressful stuff. The book highlights how Murray blends seamlessly into their family, bringing joy to the children’s lives. Pets are a source of unconditional love and compassion, and this book highlights that beautifully.

The colorful illustrations add charm to the story, making it feel like a delightful cartoon. One interesting aspect of the book is how Murray had already chosen Charlie and Emma as his family before they decided to keep him. As the adage goes, pets adopt us before we adopt them. The author also emphasizes the importance of responsible pet ownership, as the family takes Murray to the vet to ensure his good health and verify that he does not belong to anyone else.

Murray the Cat is the perfect read for young audiences who enjoy stories featuring pets. This captivating book will teach them that it is acceptable to express their feelings and that pets are great therapy. This book is a beautiful reminder that pets can bring joy and love into our lives, and their unconditional love is truly priceless.

Twins Mac & Madi Back to School

Twins Mac & Madi Back to School is a beautifully written picture book about twin sisters who will be separated at school for the first time in their lives. Due to an injury, Madi would have to ride a bus and go to a different school than her twin Mac. Neither was happy about this situation, and both feared having to go to third grade without the other. However, their wonderful mom helped them through this challenging time, and they learned that doing things apart is not always bad.

Twins have a special bond, and it can be a challenge when they have to do different things at a young age. This heartfelt story also addresses the fears of young children when they have to do something different and new. Making new friends is hard, and going someplace new without knowing anyone is also tricky. These topics are addressed in a way that young children can understand and see that their fears are normal. Author Linda Herron gives children relatable situations and solutions that are adaptable to their own lives. I love how Herron validates the girls’ feelings and does not minimize their struggles. Kids in early elementary need to know that their feelings are normal and it is ok to have them.

Twins Mac & Madi Back to School, written by Linda Herron and beautifully illustrated by Marie Delon, is a phenomenal picture book that teaches children about friendship, dealing with new situations, and how to manage their feelings of fear and the unknown. I highly recommend this for children that are starting a new school and dealing with new situations.
