Fun Farm Adventures with Cadie the Rescue Dog

Cadie, a bouncy, lovable rescue pup, takes readers on a warm and cheerful journey to the Kerp Family Farm in Fun Farm Adventures with Cadie the Rescue Dog. From splashing pigs to towering cornfields and buzzing beehives, Cadie experiences the charm and hard work of farm life through the eyes of a joyful dog seeing it all for the first time. Alongside her loving mom and friendly Farmer Bill, Cadie explores barns, meets baby animals, tastes honey, and even gets a ride on a big green tractor. The story wraps around themes of kindness, curiosity, and the everyday magic of nature and animals.

I really enjoyed this children’s book. It’s got a big heart. Cadie’s voice is bubbly and sweet without being over-the-top. It feels like a kid telling you about their favorite day ever, and that makes it infectious. The writing is straightforward and playful, with little bits of real information tucked in that kids will actually remember. Like how goats can climb because of their special hooves, or how bees help crops grow. That’s clever storytelling—fun and educational without feeling like a lesson. Also, the way Cadie cares about her cat siblings is adorable. It packs in a lot of animals, farm facts, and moments. And the positivity of the whole story is unshakable. It’s happy in a way that makes you feel good after reading it.

The illustrations are charmingly hand-drawn, full of warmth and personality. Each page feels like it was sketched with care, capturing the playful energy of Cadie and the cozy, down-to-earth feel of farm life. The soft lines and bright, friendly colors make the animals and scenery come alive in a way that’s fun and comforting. Kids will easily connect with the simple and expressive style—it looks like something they might try drawing themselves, which makes it all the more relatable and inviting.

This is a lovely picture book. I’d recommend it for young readers or for any family with a rescue dog of their own. It’s great for bedtime, classroom reading, or just a sunny afternoon snuggle. If you’ve got a kid who’s curious about farms, animals, or just loves a sweet dog story, Fun Farm Adventures with Cadie the Rescue Dog will hit the spot.

Prickles the Porcupine Learns about Peace

This sweet little children’s book follows Prickles, a grumpy porcupine who just wants some quiet time to nap in his cozy forest den. But his peace is wrecked by Patty, a cheerful puppy who loves to dig and happens to be doing it way too close to Prickles’ home. As the story unfolds, Prickles tries all the wrong things—puffing up his quills, hiding, and even yelling—to make the noise stop. But it isn’t until Patty suggests they talk and work together that Prickles learns a better way: finding a peaceful solution that makes both of them happy.

We’ve all had those moments where we feel irritated or overwhelmed and just want some quiet. The way Prickles reacts—first with frustration, then anger—is pretty true to life, especially for little ones still learning how to manage emotions. I appreciated that the story didn’t shy away from showing how his actions didn’t help, and how things only got better when he chose to be kind and helpful. That’s a strong message, simply told, and it landed with warmth.

The writing is straightforward, with lots of repetition, especially of the “whish-swish” sounds—that adds a fun rhythm kids will enjoy. There’s a gentleness to the storytelling that kept me engaged, and the lesson about peace doesn’t come across as preachy. I loved how Patty responded to Prickles’ anger with calm curiosity. That turn from conflict to teamwork was touching. And the way it all wrapped up with Patty happily digging far away and Prickles finally catching some Z’s made me smile.

Prickles the Porcupine Learns about Peace is a feel-good story for kids learning about emotions and how to handle them. It’s especially great for bedtime or quiet reading moments when you want to sneak in a lesson without making it obvious. I’d recommend it for ages 3–7, or for any family working on patience, problem-solving, and being a little more like Patty.

Dylan’s Dilemma (Dylan’s Dog Squad Book 1)

Dylan’s Dilemma is a sweet, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking story about a cocker spaniel named Dylan who starts his life in a cramped crate in South Korea and winds up on a wild adventure that brings him all the way to sunny Southern California. The book follows Dylan’s ups and downs as he finds freedom with his first owner, Aiden, faces abandonment when Aiden can no longer keep him, and eventually struggles to find a place in a new family with a boy named Casey and his no-nonsense mother. Written mostly from Dylan’s point of view, the book brings readers right into the mind of a lovable, mischievous pup who’s just trying to figure out where he belongs.

What really struck me about this book was how real Dylan’s emotions felt. Kathleen Troy doesn’t just tell you Dylan is happy or scared; she makes you feel it. When Dylan thinks, “My lungs are shrinking. I can’t breathe,” after Aiden gives him up, my heart physically hurt. Troy’s writing captures Dylan’s innocence perfectly, especially in moments like when he tries to “help” in Casey’s mom’s office by turning her important project into a shredded hamster collage. I found myself laughing aloud, though it was a bittersweet kind of laughter, recognizing that the little dog was simply trying his best.

The pacing of the story kept me locked in, too. One minute, I was giggling over Dylan’s craft skills (destroying cords, baseboards, and tables like a tiny wrecking ball), and the next, I was genuinely nervous when he was sent off in a crate across the ocean. The humor balances out the emotional gut punches really well. Plus, Casey’s character is just the right mix of loyal and goofy. His determination to keep Dylan, even when his mom is dead set against it, made me root for them both so hard. Their bond is simple but strong, like when Casey calls Dylan “Little Buddy,” giving him a sense of belonging again after losing Aiden.

One thing I noticed is that some of the adult characters are written with a playful exaggeration, especially Casey’s mom, who shifts from grumpy to affectionate with the speed of a light switch. It actually adds to the lively, slightly cartoonish tone of the story (particularly during hilarious moments like Eddie-the-Whiner’s antics at dog training). The vibrant style suits the book’s mission: to entertain first, warm the heart second, and sprinkle in seriousness just where it’s needed.

Dylan’s Dilemma is a real charmer. It’s perfect for anyone who loves dogs, funny misadventures, and heart-tugging stories about finding your forever home. I’d especially recommend it for middle-grade readers or adults who just want a sweet escape for a few hours.

Pippin’s Outback Adventure

Pippin’s Outback Adventure by Julia Seaborn is about a brave little black poodle named Pippin who goes on a camping trip in the Australian outback. Along the way, he makes friends with all sorts of animals—kangaroos, koalas, wombats, even budgies!—and ends up helping a dingo family during a big, scary dust storm. It’s a story about kindness, bravery, and working together, all wrapped up in a fun animal-filled journey.

I loved the cozy beginning with Pippin by the campfire. It felt like a classic camping tale but with just enough mystery to make it fun for kids. That whole scene where the dingoes show up and ask for water? Heart-melty stuff. My kid was glued to the page, and I’ll admit, I was too. It’s such a gentle way to introduce empathy—Pippin doesn’t hesitate to share. And it’s not preachy. It’s just nice. The artwork is so bright and full of color, and I absolutely loved how we could see every one of Pippin’s emotions.

The part with the dust storm was written in a way that feels adventurous but not too scary. I liked how Pippin didn’t just hide in the cave—he actually ran back out into the storm to rescue the dingo pups he met earlier. I loved when he says, “We look out for each other at home, and we look out for each other in the outback too.” It’s such a simple message, but it really lands.

Also, the variety of animals was a hit at bedtime. We had to stop and look up pictures of budgies and wombats afterward. The book even includes some fun animal facts and questions at the end, which gave us a chance to talk more about what we read. Hopscotch the kangaroo, with her tail-balancing tricks and friendly nature, was definitely a favorite character in our house.

Pippin’s Outback Adventure is a warm, adventurous children’s book that celebrates friendship and teamwork. It’s perfect for kids around 4 to 8, especially animal lovers or curious little explorers. Honestly, if you’re a parent who likes books that teach kindness in fun ways without hitting you over the head with it, this one’s worth picking up. Plus, it might just make you want to plan a trip to the outback.

Bringing Joy to Everyone

Elizabeth L. Sarber Author Interview

Charlie Gets Glasses follows a sweet little dog who starts having trouble seeing, so he visits the eye doctor and learns he will need glasses leading him to worry about what others will think or if he will like them. What was the inspiration for your story?

My sweet book is based on my real-life pup Charlie who does in fact wear glasses. At one of Charlie’s vet visits the doctor told me that due to his age he was starting to get cataracts. Since we go out to a lot of dog friendly places and he is always in the sun I wanted something to help protect his eyes. He had a pair of dog googles but didn’t seem to really like them much. So, I went online and looked for another pair to try with him. When I found this brand, I was super excited to see that they had clear lenses and thought that maybe having clear lenses may be more comfortable for him. They do have a UV coating to help with sun rays. And to my surprise when I got them Charlie kept them on. I got asked a lot about how he keeps them on, if they are really prescription, does he need them, and how cute he looks. But the best part was seeing how happy Charlie made kids and adults alike. I wanted to write this book to continue to bring that joy to everyone and give children a furry friend to look too when they are feeling different.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Since I grew up wearing glasses it was sometimes hard to feel like I fit in. I tended to get made fun of but now as an adult I love to be different. I have a lot of different color frames and embrace the difference. So, it was important to bring in that small detail that Charlie was scared of how he will look and to also show that not everyone will be mean. That people will embrace how cool it is to wear glasses.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

I don’t think there was one particular part I had the most fun writing. The whole book itself was a labor of love. Something that I will be able to look back on when Charlie passes. The memories made and the friends we have created through this experience.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out and what can your fans expect in the next story?

This book is not part of a series but more of an introduction to Charlie’s character and how he got his glasses. I had many people ask if more was coming and since Charlie and I have had many adventures over the years I thought why not create a series! I am in the middle of writing my second book which will be part of a series. Each book will also have one of Charlie’s real-life doggie friends in them. I am hoping to have this done by the end of the year and start on the next book in series right after.

What happens when a lovable dog can’t see clearly? He gets glasses! Unsure he’ll like them or what people will say, Charlie bravely wears them out to play until something goes terribly wrong. Follow Charlie and his adventures of curiosity, friendship, and, most of all, acceptance. Charlie Gets Glasses will leave you with a smile on your face and seeing things in a whole new way.

Onex: No Ordinary Dog

No Ordinary Dog is exactly what it says on the cover. This book follows the incredible life of Onex, a black Labrador who starts out sniffing out bombs for the U.S. Army and ends up saving lives in ways no one could’ve imagined. From war zones to Tennessee porches, Onex’s journey is packed with heart, heroism, and a tail-wagging amount of love. It’s the story of a dog who gave everything—his strength, his loyalty, his whole heart—to protect the people he loved, and in the end, became so much more than a service animal. He became family.

As someone who would rather hang out with dogs than most people, this book hit me right in the feels. I loved the way Debi Stinson writes with such raw honesty and warmth. Onex’s military service alone would’ve made him a hero, but it’s the quieter, everyday moments that stuck with me. Like when Chris collapsed in the garage and Onex sprinted off barking like crazy to get help. I teared up right there. That wasn’t just training—that was love. You can feel it. Or the time Onex chased his first tennis ball. My own pup does this goofy hop when he’s excited, and I could just picture Onex doing something similar. It made me laugh, made me ache a little too. There’s something so special about seeing a working dog finally get to just be a dog.

The last few chapters are an emotional ride. My heart was in my throat when the fire broke out, and Onex got everyone out safely. And don’t even get me started on his final days. I was ugly-crying. It wasn’t just sad, though. It was beautiful. Onex had such a purpose, and he was surrounded by people who loved him like crazy. The way Chris and Deb honored him, the way they remembered his river-dance paws even after he passed… it reminded me of the dogs I’ve loved and lost. That ache, that joy. This book gets it.

I’d recommend No Ordinary Dog to anyone who’s ever loved a dog, served in the military, or just believes in the power of second chances and loyal hearts. It’s not just a dog story—it’s a story about healing, bravery, and the bonds that never break.

Charlie Gets Glasses

Charlie Gets Glasses is a sweet and simple story about a little dog named Charlie who starts having trouble seeing clearly. Through a visit to the eye doctor and a bit of self-doubt, Charlie learns that wearing glasses isn’t something to be ashamed of, it’s something that helps him see the world better. It’s a lighthearted tale with a strong message about self-acceptance, told through warm illustrations and gentle storytelling.

What I really liked was how relatable Charlie’s experience was, especially for kids. When Charlie realizes he’s bumping into things and not seeing clearly, it’s both funny and a little sad. That moment when the doctor tells him he needs glasses? It’s such a turning point. I felt for Charlie when he worried about looking different. That kind of fear is so real, especially for children. But the way his friends support him and how cute he looks in glasses! made my heart smile. It’s a kind, encouraging message that doesn’t come off as preachy.

The writing is accessible and flows naturally. The author keeps the language easy and playful. The part where Charlie thinks glasses are only for people, not pups, cracked me up. It’s these little moments that make the story stick. The illustrations are absolutely adorable. Charlie’s expressions say a lot. There’s a cozy charm to each page that makes you want to linger a little longer before flipping.

I also liked that the book gently touches on the idea of embracing change. Charlie doesn’t like the idea of being different at first, but he grows. There’s a lovely moment when he looks in the mirror and realizes that glasses don’t change who he is; they just help him see better. That’s the kind of message that sticks with kids. It’s just simple, honest storytelling that hits home.

Charlie Gets Glasses is a heartwarming pick for kids who might be nervous about getting glasses or any change that makes them feel “different.” It’s also just a charming read for any child who loves dogs or needs a little boost in self-confidence. I highly recommend this book.

Creating My Vision

Julie Maurer Author Interview

Ichi-ban Goes Hiking follows an adventurous pup and her mommy as they explore mountain trails, celebrating the joy of nature and discovery, and the unbreakable bond between a dog and her family. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Ichi-ban was my first dog (1996-2010) and we shared many adventures hiking together in Colorado. She continues to live in my heart and one morning in the winter of 2024, as I was sitting quietly after breakfast, she started speaking in my head. “Hi! My name is Ichi-ban! I know, it’s a funny name…” I grabbed a notebook and kept on writing and in less than thirty minutes I had the first draft of Ichi-ban Goes Hiking.

Within a few days, I found myself with the drafts for three books and it was just a matter creating my vision for them and then slowly bringing them to fruition. I feel like these books are the perfect coming together of my love of dogs, kids, nature, writing, and graphic design.

How do your own outdoor adventures influence the book’s storytelling?

Everything that I write about in the book actually happened, although sometimes simplified a bit to be suitable for a children’s book.

What message do you hope young readers take away from Ichi-ban’s journey?

The outdoors, and life, are a fun adventure. Sure, you might make some mistakes from time to time as you learn, but that’s okay and part of growing up. You can still go on to have more fun.

Do you have plans for more adventures featuring Ichi-ban in the future?

There are three books out now and, at the moment, Ichi-ban’s adventures feel complete.
