Army of 29 Cats

Wynter St. Vaughan’s novel Army of 29 Cats is weird in the best way possible. Army of 29 Cats is a gritty, post-apocalyptic story told through the eyes of street-smart, dumpster-diving cats. The setting is Atomic City, a once-thriving metropolis now drowning in purple fog, feral vibes, and existential dread. Our main feline hero, McGrady, is basically a warrior-poet with claws, and along with his anxious but lovable sidekick Paws, they set out to find out what’s corrupting their city—and their friends. It’s like Watership Down meets Blade Runner, but covered in fur and way more sarcastic.

I was not expecting to get emotionally attached to a cat. But there I was, rooting for him as he leapt rooftops, dodged glowing-eyed mutant dogs, and tried to rescue Felina, a cat gone rogue. The writing has this flow that jumps between poetic and street-wise without missing a beat. Like when Grandma Mittens describes Felina’s haunting purple eyes. That’s some vivid storytelling. The whole world-building around Atomic City is eerie and immersive. It’s a mess of decay, forgotten neighborhoods, creepy raccoons, and weird purple goo that’s turning everyone into mindless husks. I was hooked.

The dialogue is hilarious and punchy. The banter between McGrady and Paws had me laughing. There’s also a moment where Amazing Grace—who totally lives up to her name—pulls a full-on parkour escape from a dog pack and disappears like a silver ninja. And when Professor Waffles showed up with his steampunk goggles, I almost clapped. The characters are so over-the-top but grounded in enough raw emotion that it works.

Sometimes, the book throws a lot at you. Like, every chapter ramps up the action and adds another creepy villain, new neighborhood, or dramatic cat monologue. I occasionally lost track of who was infected and who was just cranky. And the purple-eye infection subplot was super cool and ominous but gets a bit murky in explanation. I wanted a tiny bit more clarity there, especially after the introduction of Mr. Geiger, the ultra-creepy villain.

Still, I had a blast reading this. The mix of high-stakes adventure, grimy urban survival, and cat drama is unique. If you’re into dystopias, underground animal rebellions, or just want something completely unexpected, Army of 29 Cats delivers. It’s great for readers who liked Redwall but always wished the characters were sassier and the setting more cyberpunk. I’d hand this to teens, adult animation fans, or anyone who secretly thinks their cat is plotting world domination.

I Hope to Wake People Up

David Story Author Interview

Omega III: The Head of the Snake follows a special operations team attempting to take down a child sex trafficking ring, whose mission gets complicated when a team member and a relative go missing. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I was noticing weekly on the news, there were several missing children in the Metro Atlanta area where I live. This got my curiosity up, so I looked into it. I discovered that there was a whole world of child sex trafficking that I wasn’t aware of. I looked for books and information on the topic, but there was little to no information out there. I found some national sights on how to report missing persons. But I wanted more, I wanted to bring to light the dark and secret world of child and human trafficking. Even though my books are fiction, they do use real life examples of sexual abuse and trafficking. My research took me deep into the dark and secret world of human trafficking. Many times, the traffickers get away with a slap on the wrist or able to buy their way out of any serious prison time. That’s when I came up with the Omega book series. So far there are three books with a fourth one that I’m currently working on.

What character did you enjoy writing for? Was there one that was more challenging to write for?

The character I enjoyed the most was Shay Lynn. I model Shay’s personality after my late wife Sharons personality. The character I had trouble developing was Robert Green. I just couldn’t find the right place for him in the book series. I even devoted one chapter in book two, Omega ꞮꞮ A Cry for Help, to see if I could bring his character more to life. I didn’t want the Omega team to be some kind of super humans, ex-Navy SEALs, former CIA or the like. I wanted them to be just like you and me, with all their flaws and baggage. I wanted my readers to be able to maybe relate to them on a personal level. To say to themselves, I can be like Shay, Jack or one of the others in Omega. There’s too many books out there where the characters are the John Wicks, Jack Reacher, James Bond or some super tough guy/gal former Special Forces type.

How did you balance the action scenes with the story elements and still keep a fast pace in the story?

I used the character’s personality to drive the scenes. Each time I wrote something about one of the characters, I put myself in their bodies and mind. I asked myself, how would they react to this situation? When I first started the first book of the series, Omega Ɪ The Creation, I spent weeks developing each character and their personality. I even found pictures of people off the internet that I thought would look like my character. That way when I was writing a scene with that character, I was able to visualize them in my mind. Sometimes, they took me down a rabbit hole that I wasn’t planning to go down. But that was their character and how they would have treated the situation.

Will there be a follow-up novel to this story? If so, what aspects of the story will the next book cover?

Yes, I am currently working on book four, Omega ꞮV Inside the Belly of the Snake. Within this book, I’ll dive into the Dark Web and how it’s role in the sex and human trafficking is used. Also, how organ harvesting is connected to the secret world of human trafficking. The Omega team will continue their fight against sex and human trafficking. They will continue their work, trying to bring down these evil organizations. My hopes are that even though the Omega book series is a work of Fiction. That it will wake people up and bring into the light, the dark world of human trafficking.

Enter the world of Child Sex Trafficking and Slavery. Follow the Omega team as they fight against it. Some may call it vigilante justice or street justice, but what would you call it?

Punishing a person who is truly guilty is justified. Forgiving that person is merciful, but not punishing him is a cruelty to the innocent and society as a whole. — Adam Smith

Join Jack and Shay as they go International to take down a worldwide sex trafficking ring. During this challenging and dangerous mission, they will also be trying to recover a valued member of their team and the younger sister of one of the team members. During their mission, the team will suffer a tragic loss. Will this loss be the end of the Omega group? Follow the team as they discover how all three missions are closely tied together.

Omega III – The Head of the Snake

In Omega III: The Head of the Snake, David J. Story plunges readers into a high-stakes world of international intrigue, where a team of operatives tackles human trafficking while grappling with their personal struggles. The plot revolves around a mission to dismantle a trafficking ring, weaving together action-packed rescue operations, emotional character arcs, and a tragic loss that tests the team’s resilience. It’s a gritty, fast-paced story that doesn’t shy away from harsh realities.

One thing I admired about this book was its raw emotional core. The scenes involving Shay, particularly her fearless takedown of an abusive man in an alley, were nothing short of gripping. Shay’s tenacity and wit shine through when she quips, “If I ever hear that you’ve touched another woman again, I’ll hunt you down and finish what I’ve started.” Moments like these exemplify the book’s commitment to showing strong, multi-dimensional characters. While Shay’s depth is compelling, some secondary characters could have been explored further, as their arcs occasionally felt overshadowed by the larger narrative.

The pacing is another standout aspect. From a suspenseful road trip to a dramatic rescue mission, the book never lets up. A particular highlight was the sequence where Hunter’s abduction is revealed via a hidden camera—a scene brimming with tension and a clever use of tech.

The writing stands out for its engaging dialogue and vivid descriptions, which bring the characters and their world to life. Story’s dialogue adds authenticity and depth to each character, while scenes like the alleyway fight are so vividly portrayed that they linger in your mind. The book’s unflinching exploration of dark themes like trafficking and abuse adds a powerful layer of realism, making the story impactful and thought-provoking.

Omega III: The Head of the Snake is an intense, emotional ride. It’s a story of perseverance, justice, and humanity amidst chaos. I would recommend it to fans of action-packed thrillers and those who appreciate narratives that tackle tough subjects head-on. Just be prepared for a gritty read that doesn’t pull its punches.

In the Fangs of Jackals

In the Fangs of Jackals, by E. S. Ramirez, stands out as one of the most captivating reads of the year. Melding the pulse-pounding action reminiscent of Kingsmen with intricately designed time-travel mechanics and an incredible grasp of historical events, this novel is an absolute treat for enthusiasts of history, action, and quantum mechanics.

The narrative artfully weaves the lives of its characters, centering on Karl Wagner, a German who braved the terrors of both World Wars. Driven by his harrowing experiences and a fervent wish to spare the world the bloodshed he’s witnessed, Karl embarks on a daring mission to alter the course of time itself. Alongside a select group of allies, he challenges the very fabric of time, confronting an antagonist whose intentions are as pure as they come.

For history fans, In the Fangs of Jackals offers more than just an adrenaline-packed journey. As a history major, I was genuinely impressed with how Ramirez delved deep into the intricacies of wartime Germany, shedding light on the multifaceted motivations that shaped both World Wars. The novel masterfully combines thrilling action sequences with a historical narrative that remains faithful to its time-travel mechanics, a delightfully rare combination.

What truly elevates Ramirez’s writing is the depth given to each character. Gone are the clichéd, one-dimensional villains or heroes. Instead, we meet humans with layered personalities, shaped by their love for their nation, their leaders, or a nuanced blend of both. At the heart of it, Karl Wagner emerges as a loyalist caught in turbulent times, desperate to avert the global turmoil, while his nemesis believes in the inevitability and necessity of the wars. The nuanced portrayal of these characters is a testament to Ramirez’s prowess as an author, making this a reading experience I cherish.

A word of caution: I feel the graphic depiction of violence, while historically accurate, might not sit well with everyone. However, if you’ve relished movies like Kingsmen or John Wick, this novel will be right up your alley. While it doesn’t shy away from portraying the brutal realities of war, it does so with authenticity and respect.

In the Fangs of Jackals, by E. S. Ramirez, is more than just a book—it’s an experience. One that lingers, prompts contemplation, and leaves you yearning for a cinematic adaptation that can match its brilliance. I recommend diving into this epic tale.

A Bit of Truth Mixed Into Fiction

C.A. Simonson Author Interview

Rock Band Roadie follows a sixteen-year-old girl growing up in the projects who dreams of becoming a singer in a band, only to have her dream become a nightmare. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I played the keyboard in the gospel rock band called Cross Road Band. The first couple of chapters were taken from real-life events, which set up the story.

Some events in the book were chillingly similar to real-life events. Did you take any inspiration from real life when developing this book?

Yes, the prison riot was a true event. I was one of the keyboardists who hid behind the curtain until it was over (but no one was kidnapped or escaped in the real event). The events in Patterson were also true. The projects and the park where we played as well as the occurrences written about it were true. We often had other teenagers come along (‘roadies’ if you will) to help pass out literature or help set up. The band traveled to maximum security prisons and juvenile detention centers to sing and play and then stayed in communication with a number of the inmates.

What was one of the hardest parts of Rock Band Roadie for you to write?

Probably the hardest part was staging the prison escape and making it believable. I consulted with a policeman and a military judge for details and accuracy. This started out as a short story and evolved into a book through the advice of these men. And the title is always one of the hardest tasks for me.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

There are a couple I’m mulling around in my head at this point. One will be a coming-of-age story about a pre-teen boy who migrates to the USA in search of his father.

The other will be about a child who yearns for a magic dress that will keep her from disappearing like her friend did. A story of terrible secrets of child trafficking.

When will they be available? Hopefully by fall of 2024

From the moment Jemma heard the first song, she was intrigued. Drawn in by the hard rock style, she swayed to the music. She yearned to be on stage too, dressed in leathers and sequins, holding a microphone and belting out tunes. But life in the projects detained that dream with a drugged-out mom and an overbearing, controlling boyfriend.

Through a few twists and turns, Jemma overcomes her trauma as her dream is about to come true. Tonight she will sing with the band in a maximum security prison. Nerves on edge as she walks to the stage, she senses a man’s eyes following her every move. When the lights suddenly die, a riot breaks out and panic erupts. Cowering in the darkness, Jemma’s scream is stifled when an oily hand clasps her mouth shut and drags her into the deep bowels of the prison.

All she wanted to do was sing — she didn’t plan on being kidnapped and part of a getaway plan. Will she be able to talk her way out this time, or was she in on it the whole time?

Rock Band Roadie

Immersed in a profound love for music and the allure of the stage, Jemma finds solace in witnessing her favorite band perform the songs that resonate with her soul. Yet, her life is far from idyllic. Growing up in the projects, amidst the struggles of an addicted mother and a controlling boyfriend, Jemma knows all too well that dreams seldom manifest in such an environment. However, a chance encounter with Annie alters the trajectory of her existence.

Within the pages of the poignant yet inspiring novel, Rock Band Roadie by C.A. Simonson, we are intimately drawn into Jemma’s arduous journey. Unfolding through a traumatic event that thrusts her into a perilous situation, the narrative unearths the profound growth and coming-of-age of this resilient young woman. Despite projecting maturity, the author artfully reminds us that Jemma remains a sixteen-year-old adolescent.

The narrative style captivated me deeply. From the outset, we are apprised that this compelling story is grounded in real-life experiences, lending an added layer of impact to the tale. Skillfully alternating between the perspectives of Jemma and her boyfriend, Jimmy, the dual point of view enriches the narrative, allowing us to witness events from both sides before converging into a climactic moment at the story’s end. The prose flows effortlessly, making it a quick and engrossing read. One drawback I observed in the book was its brevity towards the conclusion. The story left me yearning for approximately 50 more pages to provide a more complete resolution. Notwithstanding this minor setback, the novel’s conclusion left a lasting impression on me. The story’s impact and emotional resonance more than compensated for the slight drawback, making it a compelling and memorable read.

Rock Band Roadie‘s ability to evoke emotions and immerse readers in the world of its characters is commendable, making it a compelling and worthwhile read.

Babylon Laid Waste-A Journey in the Twilight of the Idols

Babylon Laid Waste: A Journey in the Twilight of the Idols, authored by Brigitte Goldstein, masterfully delves into the harrowing saga of a young Jewish woman’s audacious endeavor to locate her long-lost grandmother in the ruins of post-war Berlin.

Set against the backdrop of a world in the throes of convalescence following the devastation of World War II, the narrative unravels in the year 1946. Our protagonist, Artemisia Safran, hailing from New York, receives an unexpected missive hinting at the possible survival of her grandmother, previously assumed deceased. This news prompts Artemisia to defy familial objections and embark on a perilous journey through the scarred streets of Germany. The desperate urgency of her mission forces her to weave a web of deceptions, but her inexperience may inadvertently obscure the real perils lurking along her path. A quagmire of danger engulfs her, and she’s falsely branded as a Nazi, cornered with seemingly no escape. However, salvation emerges in the enigmatic form of Franz Kafka from Prague, who, acknowledging her undeserved plight, meticulously crafts an escape strategy. This unlikely alliance ignites sparks of romance, complicating Artemisia’s original mission, weaving a tangled tapestry of politics, survival, and blossoming love.

Goldstein’s narration is fantastic. She meticulously structures each chapter and segment of the novel to effectively guide the reader through the labyrinth of poignant events that marked the War. The authenticity and precision of the recounted horror scenes invite readers on a journey of recovery and reconciliation, fostering connections and facilitating healing.

The novel’s intricate structure, engrossing plot, and enlightening insights encapsulate the harrowing uncertainties and fears of the era. The diverse perspectives offered through an array of well-developed characters craft a provocative milieu, compelling readers to reflect on historical events and vicariously experience the trials of those who bore witness to some of mankind’s darkest hours.

Babylon Laid Waste: A Journey in the Twilight of the Idols stands as a riveting historical novel imbued with unexpected plot twists and resolute characters that enrich the reader’s engagement. This highly recommended literary piece succinctly encapsulates significant moments of Jewish history with a deep reverence for past events and a tribute to the countless lives tragically extinguished during this catastrophic epoch.
