Among the Wolves of Nottely Lake
Posted by Literary Titan

Chip Jett’s Among the Wolves of Nottely Lake interlaces dark fantasy with a journey of self-discovery, pulling readers into a narrative that is rich with suspense, myth, and the complexities of belonging. At the heart of this compelling story is Rob Giroux, a high school senior haunted by the enigma of his mother’s disappearance. Urged on by his girlfriend, Candace, he submits to a DNA test, unaware that this single act will shatter the foundations of his world. What he uncovers is nothing short of staggering. His genetic makeup carries more than human traits. It holds a secret that thrusts him into a hidden world, one teeming with ancient power struggles and uncharted alliances.
The novel deftly introduces this revelation, layering tension and mystery as Rob confronts an unimaginable truth. Instead of granting the clarity he seeks, this discovery drags him into a whirlwind of questions about his origins and identity, with Jett’s narrative momentum ensuring readers feel every twist and revelation alongside Rob. This layered approach transforms a simple coming-of-age tale into an enthralling saga, making the reader as eager as the protagonist to piece together the puzzle of his heritage. Jett breathes fresh life into the familiar werewolf lore, framing it within an ongoing conflict between werewolves and hunters. This feud, steeped in history and animosity, injects a potent mix of suspense and moral complexity into the story. Rob soon realizes that even some of the people he trusts most may be hunters, forcing him to question his loyalty and the true nature of those around him.
The themes of betrayal and trust reverberate throughout the novel, heightening the tension and making every relationship fraught with hidden motives. Rob’s transformation is not only physical but deeply psychological. He wrestles with an identity crisis, torn between the world he’s always known and a supernatural legacy he cannot ignore. Jett weaves this struggle with precision, shaping Rob from a bewildered teenager into someone faced with life-altering choices about belonging and acceptance. The evolution of his character is a testament to Jett’s narrative skill, where each emotional beat is carefully developed, and every revelation leaves readers hanging on for more. The emotional stakes are compounded by Rob’s turbulent relationship with his father, a figure whose harshness has left deep emotional scars. This difficult dynamic is explored with sensitivity, adding layers to Rob’s journey and touching on universal themes of family, loss, and the search for validation. In contrast, Rob’s connection with his sisters brings moments of warmth and perspective, offering a balance to the story’s darker undertones. Jett’s vivid portrayal of the Blue Ridge Mountains serves as a fitting backdrop to this emotional rollercoaster, painting a landscape as wild and isolated as Rob’s internal struggle.
Among the Wolves of Nottely Lake stands apart in the fantasy genre. Jett balances the supernatural with authentic human experiences to create a narrative that is as heart-pounding as it is heartfelt. The book explores loyalty, identity, and the cost of secrets, all while maintaining a suspenseful pace that grips young adult and adult readers alike.

The Bedfordshire Warlock
Posted by Literary Titan

Patrick R. Field’s The Bedfordshire Warlock delivers a captivating mix of history, witchcraft, science, and the supernatural, spiced with just enough romance to keep things balanced. The story revolves around Dorian Leeves, a warlock who doesn’t practice magic but knows he possesses extraordinary abilities. When he moves with his mother to a colonial-era house in Bedfordshire, strange events intensify, and his latent powers grow stronger. As he uncovers the home’s grim past, linked to Elias Doever—a man once tried for witchcraft—Dorian becomes obsessed with the town’s dark secrets and wonders if fate has marked him to take on the same title.
Narrated by Dorian himself, the story plunges into his meticulous and descriptive perspective. At times, I feel the narration leans more toward “telling” than “showing.” Yet, in a unique way, this approach works. Dorian’s scientific and analytical personality shines through, giving readers a clear sense of his methodical nature. Field manages to weave an intriguing plot that unfolds with surprising fluidity. The novel’s mysteries pile up, strange visions and supernatural events intertwining until the truth behind Bedfordshire’s history finally reveals itself.
Field excels in crafting the setting of Bedfordshire. The small-town life comes alive with a vivid, almost nostalgic charm. He perfectly captures the essence of a New England autumn, where falling leaves, crisp air, and centuries-old buildings cloak the town in a thick aura of history. This rich backdrop gives the book a layer of calm, a stark yet appealing contrast to the eerie supernatural elements.
The mystery is the heartbeat of The Bedfordshire Warlock, pulsing stronger with each twist and turn. Following Dorian as he connects the dots is thrilling, and I was genuinely invested in his quest. The finale, though, felt a bit over-the-top, and I believe the romance seemed to exist mostly to heighten the emotional stakes at the climax. Still, these minor notes didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. This is a gripping, immersive ride, and sometimes, that’s exactly the type of escape readers need.

The Outcast
Posted by Literary_Titan
Fatal Infatuation follows a young college girl who becomes involved with a centuries-old vampire on a mission to teach other vampires how to live in peace with humans. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
A few things came together to bring ALMOST HUMAN to life. I’ve always been interested in bats. Vampire bats have an anticoagulant in their saliva called “draculin” (named after Count Dracula!) that keeps blood from clotting. I had the idea that such a thing would be useful for vampires as well. It would also be useful if they had something to keep the victim calm, like a drug.
I always wondered about a vampire’s ability to put victims in thrall. In old movies, vampires are always able to hypnotize people, and it’s never really explained. People are just ‘under their power’. I always wondered – why? How does it work? I put those questions together with the anticoagulant/drug idea, and took it further. What if vampires could inject their victims with venom – like a snake? Only the venom would not be deadly poison, but a combination of drugs that kept blood from clotting, kept the victim calm and even willing, and also could mark territory for the vampire – leaving a mark that other vampires could see. The vampire could then use the existence of this ‘drug’ in their victim’s system, to put them in thrall as well.
The idea of venomous vampires seemed so logical to me, that I assumed for sure that someone else had done it already. I began searching my library for a book like that, so I could read it! This was probably in the early 90’s and there weren’t very many vampire books in my library at that time. I never found what I was looking for, and I filed the idea away. It never occurred to me to write it myself, LOL.
In the late 80’s, I had discovered Anne Rice’s vampire chronicles and absolutely loved them. That was the first time I read something from the vampire’s point of view. The way that she captured emotions and described surroundings was mesmerizing to me, and I really connected with her story. I’m also a huge fan of the T.V. series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Joss Whedon is a genius! That said – towards the end of the show, I started disliking some decisions the writers made. I understood their vision, but I also saw missed opportunities. I would have done things differently.
That started me thinking of my own storylines and my own characters, incorporating my venomous vampire idea. None of this was written down, just daydreamed during housework. Then one day I realized that a lot of the ideas I had were really good, and it depressed me to think that it would all just be forgotten. So, I sat down one night at the computer, to write out a few things so I wouldn’t forget, and could look back at them one day. The scenes just came pouring out and before I knew it, I’d been up writing almost the whole night! That’s when I realized that I had a real story to tell, and wanted to write it all out from beginning to end.
As for the characters: Felicity is a girl much like myself at that age, and Cain… well, I knew that I wanted him to be much different from other vampires I had seen, kinder, with a vision for change from prevalent depictions. (This was in 2003 before many other modern vampire books had come out). I was the lead vocalist for my church choir at the time, and during church services I couldn’t help but wonder how a person of Christian faith would deal with becoming a vampire. In literature, I think vampires especially are a wonderful metaphor for exploring topics such as faith, addiction, abuse, ethics and prejudice, among other things. Vampires embody the persona of anyone who has ever felt outcast, alone and unable, unwilling or undeserving to find love. I think that is a basic element of why we connect with them on some level, and that is how my ALMOST HUMAN vampires were created.
I felt this novel’s supporting characters were intriguing and well developed. Who was your favorite character to write for?
Thank you! I can’t say that I have a favorite character to write, because I really am all of the characters in this book! Each of these characters has been taken from the seed of something within myself. I’ve been lucky enough in my life never to have been sexually abused or addicted to drugs, but everything that goes into making up the personalities for my characters, how they feel and react to things, has come from some little grain of dealing with something in my own life – magnified. At some point in my life, I have totally identified with and “been” these people. Even if it didn’t outwardly show, this is how I felt and wanted to react. Writing through my characters is extremely cathartic for me. If I could not emotionally live through what they go through, and transcribe it to the page, I don’t think the writing would resonate very strongly with readers. That close relationship between an author’s feelings and the writing is what gives a story life.
I wondered a little at first, whether I would be able to write a believable ‘guy’, but when you come down to it, we are all just people. I take care to really examine the guy’s motives throughout each scene, and to try and observe and notice things the way I think a man would. It’s actually rather fun writing for my guys, Cain and Ben, and stepping into the male perspective. Cain is extremely dear to my heart, as is Ben, stubborn and headstrong as he may be, (my husband is basically a combination of the two, LOL) but as far as being the most fun to write…
I have to choose the supporting ladies…Alyson & Sindy. Those girls are very different, but such a blast! They are willful, daring, strong women, who sometimes act in ways I wish I could, but never would. Let’s face it, Sindy is often an evil bitch, and while many love to hate her, she is a lot of fun to write! Alyson is so sassy and impossible to ignore that she basically took over and demanded to have the spotlight in the 2nd trilogy! Good characters are like that – you can outline and plot your story but when the character hits the page, sometimes they are just going to do what they want and as the author, I need to be true to them and adjust the story to fit their needs. It’s much more fun when they take on a life of their own!
The cover for this book is interesting. How did you create the cover for Fatal Infatuation?
Thank you, I do all of my own cover art. I’ve always been artistic and enjoy trying to convey the feeling of the story through the artwork when I’m not writing. While there are romantic elements in the story, it is not what I would consider a typical paranormal romance, so I really did not want a half-naked man on the cover (nice as that might be to look at 😉 ) While Felicity is quiet and shy at first, the women in this story are all very strong in their own ways and I think they deserve the spotlight on my covers. While I do have male readers who love the books, as a woman, I feel that the romantic male leads are best left to description and imagination.
The model for Felicity is also a talented photographer (Natalie Paquette-Cruz) who lives near me in upstate NY and has given permission for me to use her photos of herself. I added the bite on her throat to show readers what to expect – since the word vampire is not in the title. Fatal Infatuation also has a zombie silhouette hidden in the background because there are a few in the story and I thought readers should be forewarned…
I try to find backgrounds for my covers that depict the feeling I want to invoke and accurately portray the settings. All of my books take place in New York – upstate and further into the series on Long Island – I have lived in both places. On the Fatal Infatuation cover I love the way the top of the tree echoes the same way Felicity is bending and arching her neck (the zombie is also posed similarly). Also, I think color is a wonderful identifier. My series is being written as a succession of trilogies. The first trilogy of books are all red, the second trilogy is purple, the third is blue and the fourth (and final) will be green.
Can you tell us what the second book will be about and when it will be available for fans to purchase?
Novel #2, Lost Reflections continues the story from book 1, picking up right where we left off. These books are not stand-alone and you need the complete trilogy to get the full story. In book 2 we learn a lot more about Cain’s past. Although his origin story is told through recalled flashbacks, it is woven in amongst the progression of the modern storyline as well. Cain became a vampire in 1692, and a lot of research went into weaving his fictional existence to fit into true history. Before becoming an author, I was a school librarian, so I enjoy getting sucked down a research rabbit-hole now and then. As the series continues, the cast becomes a lot more diverse, and I have learned a lot about different cultures, events, and random facts in order to write it. While my story is paranormal in nature, I think those elements are much more believable when surrounded by reality as much as possible, so readers can be truly immersed in the story as though it could really be happening. So, when reading book 2, Lost Reflections, you will find most of the details in Cain’s fictional story to be true – right down to the ship that brought him to America, its name, captain, and cargo! Most readers probably don’t notice these details, or realize the research involved, but I think it’s worth the effort on my part.
This is the blurb for Lost Reflections:
Felicity has helped her friends to escape the venomous vixen Sindy, but cannot divine the motives of Cain, the vampire who captured first her gratitude, and then her heart. She finds the historical tale of Cain’s past enthralling and frightening. Now she must determine whether the addictive venom in Cain’s kiss is clouding her judgment, and if his thirst for her blood is a driving force too strong for their love to conquer. It’s difficult to contemplate such questions while under the attack of a vengeful vampire and his zombie slaves. Felicity’s heart has already been lost to Cain; will she lose her life as well?

Lost Reflections
Posted by Literary Titan

Stepping into the world of vampires feels like entering a dark and seductive realm where danger and desire coalesce, pulling you deeper into the shadows with each turn of the page. Lost Reflections, the second volume of Melanie Nowak’s Almost Human series, masterfully captures this allure. Felicity’s entanglement with Cain, the enigmatic vampire haunted by a shadowy past, grows ever more complicated. Their connection becomes a dance of trust and suspicion, where Felicity must grapple with the question: Are her feelings genuine, or are they the product of Cain’s irresistible supernatural influence? As she unravels pieces of Cain’s history, new dangers emerge, including a vengeful vampire, Sindy, and her sinister, zombie-like followers.
Having eagerly awaited this second installment after reading volume one, I found Nowak’s storytelling just as mesmerizing. Her use of imagery stands out, painting a world that is haunting yet beautiful and rich with sensory detail. Cain’s gaze feels almost tangible, Felicity’s surroundings pulse with unspoken threats, and the shadows seem to hum with anticipation. Nowak strikes a perfect balance between the eerie supernatural elements and scenes brimming with raw emotion, making the romance feel both intense and genuine.
Nowak also excels in her portrayal of character dynamics. The dialogue between Felicity and Cain crackles with tension and allure. Each conversation peels back layers of desire, curiosity, and doubt, showcasing Felicity’s inner struggle to separate her authentic emotions from the influence of Cain’s vampiric powers. Cain’s carefully chosen words keep both Felicity and the reader guessing, intensifying the suspense and deepening the intrigue. These exchanges are written with precision, emphasizing the power dynamics and the seductive pull that makes vampire romances so compelling. The menacing presence of Sindy and her followers adds a chilling backdrop to the romance, amplifying the stakes.
Lost Reflections is a spellbinding read that is filled with vivid imagery, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters. Nowak weaves horror and passion seamlessly, ensuring that readers remain engrossed from start to finish. It’s an enchanting addition to the series, and I can’t wait to dive into what comes next.

Fatal Infatuation: ALMOST HUMAN ~The First Trilogy~
Posted by Literary Titan

Blending young-adult fiction with paranormal intrigue is a surefire recipe for success, especially when the story revolves around powerful vampires grappling with existential dilemmas. Fatal Infatuation, Book 1 in Melanie Nowak’s Almost Human trilogy, expertly weaves this concept, centering on the complicated relationship between Felicity, a college student, and Cain, a centuries-old vampire. Felicity never anticipated becoming the object of affection for both a charming human and a vampire. Now, she finds herself entangled in their emotions, trying to maintain balance as her own feelings and fears intensify.
The novel immerses readers in a cozy yet haunting atmosphere, drawing them into a world rich with Gothic allure. Set in a small college town, the location adds a sense of intimacy and mystery, ideal for those who appreciate a slow-burn romance wrapped in a paranormal twist. The relationship between Felicity and Cain evolves naturally, with emotional depth that builds gradually, keeping readers engaged. Cain’s internal struggles, paired with Felicity’s discovery of the supernatural, bring a humanizing element to the otherwise dark and otherworldly narrative.
For a vampire novel, I feel the action seems somewhat subdued. While the story excels at establishing a dark, almost comfortingly Gothic vibe, I believe it lacks the intense, high-stakes conflicts typical of the genre. It is worth noting that Fatal Infatuation departs from the common vampire tropes in a most delightful way. With a plot that is more character-driven than action-based, it a refreshing take on vampire lore.
Fatal Infatuation, the first in Nowak’s trilogy, delivers a captivating romantic tale with a Gothic edge, making it an enjoyable read for fans of atmospheric, character-driven stories. Focused more on relationships and existential dilemmas than intense action sequences, it remains a worthy addition to any paranormal romance collection and a novel I highly recommend to any fan of fantasy series.

A Forbidden Relationship
Posted by Literary_Titan

Demon’s Choice follows a demon in human form who finds himself intensely attracted to a human waitress despite the idea of a human/demon romance being ill-advised. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
My husband and I were rewatching Supernatural for possibly the fifth time, and the season where Dean becomes a demon, however short-lived that was, made me wonder how a demon would react if their loved one was threatened. Dean as a character is very protective of his family, and the thought occurred to me that as a demon this characteristic could be magnified. This went on to consider how a demon would react if their loved one ending up being the sacrifice used to summon them.
But I didn’t want to just repeat stories I had read where the sacrifice was merely sent to the demon and they end up sparing the sacrifice’s life with a new deal. I wanted it to be something that stood out, that pulled on heartstrings from the beginning. The only way I could see that being done was to turn the sacrifice into a blood ritual, meaning the sacrifice would already be dead on the demon’s arrival. Obviously, with this being the love interest that would bring the story to a very abrupt end before it even begun. That in turn birthed the creation of boundlings, sacrificed souls that agree to live on to serve Hell. From that, I delved into creating a full world with intricate lore for how Hell functioned, and how each demon served a purpose.
The relationship between a demon and a human developed naturally from that. Demons are immortal and serve a very specific purpose in the expansion of Hell. If humans knew about them, that would greatly hinder their work, so logically demons that operated on Earth had to be secretive. And everyone loves a forbidden relationship.
Your characters are richly developed, making readers want to get to know them. What character did you enjoy writing for? Was there one that was more challenging to write for?
Ambrose was my favourite character to write in Demon’s Choice. He is a character that has lived in my head for I’m honestly not sure how long anymore, but he never really fit into a story until now. When the concept for Demon’s Choice came to me, I knew instantly he was made to fill the shoes of the main male character and love interest. The story itself focuses on Lena’s journey, but it is through the patience, support and love that Ambrose provides her that makes that journey possible.
However, one character that gave me the greatest challenge was Cyrus. Not because he was difficult to write, or that I didn’t enjoy developing his character, but because he wanted to be the focus of any scene he was a part of. I am a firm believer that our characters are real to us and Cyrus absolutely proved that to me. I frequently had to have conversations with him to tone his attitude down, to the point where I promised him the second book in the series so he would get his time to shine. And boy, did he.
In fantasy novels it’s easy to get carried away with the magical powers characters have. How did you balance the use of supernatural powers?
Before delving into the power systems of Hell, in a rare moment of actual planning, I wrote out how each power manifested. The different kinds of elemental power I wanted to introduced and how they interacted, or counteracted, with each other. Self-healing was a necessary for some demons, but much like with sports, some are better at it than others, and some cannot harness this ability at all. This was helped by introducing demonic rankings, creating lower and higher-level demons, all with varying ranging of abilities and powers. The key was simply to be consistent, and to refer back to my lore as and when needed.
Where does the story go in the next book, and where do you see it going in the future?
The purpose of the series is to build to the actual Apocalypse. Book 2, Demon’s Faith, focuses on Cyrus and Marcus, characters introduced in Book 1, and their developing relationship as they support and serve Lena in her new role. Likewise, the following books will focus on different couplings, but all driving towards the same goal. Bringing about the Apocalypse.
The final book in the series will be told from four perspectives or one character from each of the preceding books. It will be the ultimate end and culmination of all previous narratives. All will be tested more than they ever have been, and not all will survive. It’s the end of days after all.
I also plan to have a number of spin-off novellas, features characters we have met along the way, but that have no real bearing on the main storyline. Giving me the opportunity to continue living in my world of demons.
Sacrificed to a demon she finds herself thrown into a world where she is the centre of attention, completely dependent on the man she longs for. Others now covet her and her growing power, seeking to tear her apart from the only person who has truly cared for her. The one she chose to be with.
Can she find the strength to save both her and her heart?
–
Demon’s Choice is a supernatural romance with some dark topics. It contains content and situations that could be triggering for some readers.

Honoring My Best Friend
Posted by Literary_Titan

Infinity Tales follows a seemingly ordinary cat who, after a series of mysterious events, ends up on a journey to help alleviate sadness in humans. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
What inspired Leo in The Dark series and inspired me to write his stand-alone story was my real-life cat Tiggie. Tiggie came into my life during an uncertain time and helped me through it by just being there. He also had a rough life. He was more to me than just a pet, he was my best friend. When I had to make the difficult decision to ease his pain and let him cross the rainbow bridge, it hit me hard. The best way I could honor him was to write parts of his personality into Leo. Not only did I want to honor Tiggie, but I also wanted to honor all felines as I’ve been around cats my whole life. It was difficult to write, but I’m glad I didn’t give up.
In fantasy novels it’s easy to get carried away with the magical powers characters have. How did you balance the use of supernatural powers?
Although Leo becomes supernatural that helps drive the story-line, my focus remained on the fact that he’s a cat and thinks differently than humans, even if he has some human qualities. Even though he may not be a normal cat, he still stays true to his self, taking the time to learn and understand the world around him along with his purpose.
What were some ideas that were important for you to personify in your characters?
The most important personification of Leo was to think like a cat. To write the story through a feline’s perspective. Cats are often misunderstood for their independent personalities and odd behaviors. My hope is readers are able to view cats through a different lens and be able to understand them a little better as they all have unique personalities just like us humans.
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
I’m working on editing the last book in The Dark series as well as a memoir of my journey as an author. I’m hoping they will be both available by the end of 2024 if not then early 2025.

The Darkened Enchantment follows the daughter of a vampire and werewolf hiding her home life while working as a firefighter who meets a shy high school gardener when their worlds collide when faced with tragedy. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
When I first started writing The Dark series, I only had three stories in mind. At the end of All I See Are Dark Clouds, I introduced a new character and asked the age-old question, what if? From there, The Darkened Enchantment took off where basically I throw everything in it from the prior books and make it chaotic.
There was a lot of time spent crafting the character traits in this novel. What was the most important factor for you to get right in your characters?
The most important factor to get right was the two different personalities of my main characters Lily and Cleo. They come from different backgrounds and upbringings, even if the story is a bit futuristic. While one is confident, the other is shy. One is fearless, while the other is fearful. When times become uncertain, they lean on each other for support while also teaching valuable lessons.
I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from, and how did it change as you were writing?
Lily, one of the main characters, was the inspiration to continue The Dark series and explored new terrain where she lives in a fantasy world that’s normal for her, but it’s also difficult as she has to keep it separated from reality, as the stakes are high if the worlds clash. Her fearlessness and bold attitude gives her the confidence to begin a career in firefighting, but when her world gets turned upside-down she is forced to question everything. Enter Cleo. Polar opposite of Lily. Switching back between the two in third-person narrative was difficult, especially when many characters from prior books were also included in
the story. What I had to focus on was, it was Lily and Cleo’s story.
Where does the story go in the next book, and where do you see it going in the future?
I ended The Darkened Enchantment in a way that the series should have been done, however there was one character who still had a story to be told. The next book, which is the final book in The Dark series, is
different, but has a full circle moment in what The Dark series encompasses. Stay tuned!

Cleo Hedera lives a quiet life keeping her head down. She’s eager to make it through high school and go to a place where she can meet people with the same interest as her. Her part-time job at the local feed and garden center is where she is the happiest. Plants don’t judge or make fun like people do. She embraces the few people who accept her for who she is.
Lily and Cleo live in two different worlds until tragedy strikes, forcing their worlds to collide. When the ground becomes shaky and they only have each other to lean on, will they be able to rise above the chaos that ensues?
