Chess Fiction For Kids

Victoria Winifred Author Interview

“No Time for Halloween: The Frankenstein-Dracula Defense” follows the Cozy Chess Club’s desperate race against time to solve the mystery of the missing chess clock so as not to let their epic Halloween celebration be ruined. What was the inspiration for the setting and setup of your story?

When I first felt the inspiration to incorporate chess into my own classroom, I was observing children play the game at a colleague’s afterschool club. It seemed fitting to choose that moment as the inspiration for the name and setting of my new series, The Cozy Chess Club Mysteries. Also, my own chess club location was indeed quite cozy, as I provided two couches, bouncy balls, and various creature comforts and treats in my classroom.

As is my ongoing goal when writing chess fiction for kids, the setting is always in some way immersed in chess, but the story stands on its own and does not require chess knowledge. However, towards the end of this book, I do teach a quick Halloween-themed chess opening (the “opening” is a short series of moves to begin a chess game) to add extra enjoyment for my readers.

When it comes to the story setup, all students have a strong attachment to their classroom belongings and special activity items. In this case, a specific piece of equipment goes missing at a highly inconvenient time, providing a high-stakes dramatic beginning of a mystery to which young children can relate.

The characters Jasmine, Dondre, Abbie, and Zack each have unique traits. Can you share some insights into your inspiration for these characters?

I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing these characters spring to life as I wrote this book. Each child possesses multiple traits inspired by the countless students I have known throughout the years. There is the endearing spontaneity of Dondre, the emotionally resilient Abbie, the wise-beyond-her-years Jasmine, and the dependable and unassumingly self-assured Zack. I adore the camaraderie they cultivate as a team, as well as the various dynamics that unfold when they engage one-to-one. Writing these books rejuvenates my connection to the classroom, allowing me to relish the company of my students once again.

What message or lessons do you hope young readers take away from this installment of the Cozy Chess Club Mysteries series?

Firstly, I hope young readers thoroughly enjoy reading the mystery from start to finish. Additionally, I hope the regard, friendship, and support exhibited by the students toward one another, as well as the mutual respect between the teacher and students serve as an inspiration to individuals of all ages. Another objective of this book is to encourage schools to incorporate chess into their activities. Chess plays a vital role in helping the characters in the story solve the mystery by promoting logical and analytical thinking. Lastly, should readers feel motivated to try out the Halloween chess opening and even acquire their own chess set after reading this book, that would check off another box on my wish list!

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I am currently working on the second book in the Cozy Chess Club Mysteries series, which will take place the day before winter holidays begin. As you might guess, that day brings a new mystery and much drama for the club members! Abbie’s Angel: A Christmas Puzzle should be available by November 1, 2023. A special holiday-related chess strategy will also be included.

And this Halloween, the Cozy Chess Club finds that they are swiftly running out of time.

No time for Halloween: The Frankenstein-Dracula Defense by Victoria Winifred is an intriguing installment in the Cozy Chess Club Mysteries series. This is my first experience with the series, and I had very little trouble keeping the characters straight after the first few pages. I love Dondre’s flair, Jasmine’s intelligence, Abbie’s can-do attitude, and Zack’s shy heroism. Each page of this highly engaging story is simply full of life. Every character and situation is described so well that it’s almost like watching a movie. I also loved that I got to learn something new, as the author takes the time to put chess moves based on real-life chess scenarios into the book without a shred of boredom, and I like that there is so much about life that can be learned from this classic game. I highly recommend this charming story for its exceptional descriptions, engaging storytelling, and valuable educational elements.

No Time for Halloween: the Frankenstein-Dracula Defense is short and sweet, perfect for ages seven and up and all who love classic children’s detective stories. A delightful tale that artfully weaves chess strategy into an amazing mystery, this book is a wonderful choice for reading on a rainy summer afternoon.

May is National Pet Month

 Victoria Winifred Author Interview

Murray the Cat follows an intelligent and caring cat who finds the perfect family to adopt; he just has to convince them. I think this original idea is intriguing. How did you come up with this idea and develop it into a story?

This book was inspired by a very special cat that adopted our household years ago. While names and the narrative are fictionalized to a certain extent, many of the events depicted are based on actual happenings. The family’s initial reluctance to take in the cat and Murray’s tenacity are both factual. The twist of the plot is also truth-based. I’m pleased that this book was published in time for “National Pet Month,” which is the month of May in the United States!

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Tammy Brown?

I spotted Tammy Brown’s brilliant work several years ago when I first started writing this book. It was the art in her own book, “Herman the Mouse,” that convinced me she was the perfect illustrator for the job. When my text was ready, I contacted her. Tammy is so patient and talented; each beautiful watercolor illustration in my book was planned and discussed in detail. She was able to incorporate many elements that were of great importance to me, such as the pinkness of Murray’s belly, and subtle details indicating how the cat brought harmony to his new family. Also, because of the followers that my previous book, “The Princess, the Knight, and the Lost God: A Chess Story” is still sending my way, I made sure the presence of chess was included in Murray’s new home (also fact-based!)

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Although it is a sweet story for kids, there is an important point in the plot’s backstory for adults. You’ll find a brief mention in the book that a different family had previously adopted Murray from a shelter. What I’d like to share is that although the home with three kids and many other animals was not Murray’s dream home, it was still preferable to the fate an older and large cat like Murray would face in a shelter if not adopted at all. But every shelter has its own rules; some will not give an animal to a family with young children. Many insist there can be no possibility of certain animals ever going outside (regardless of the setting), and they often require that someone be home an unreasonable number of hours every day. These and other stringent rules result in many animals never being placed, and a very sad ending for them may follow. That is why a portion of royalties for this book will be donated to Nathan Winograd’s nokilladvocacycenter.org. This organization provides solid support and a step-by-step guide for animal shelters to vastly improve their pet placement rate. Mr. Winograd, from whom an introductory quote is included in my book, has spent decades of work in this sphere. His successful efforts might be the very reason that “Murray” had a chance to find us and bless our lives with his presence.

What is the next adventure that Murray will be going on?

When the family finally moves cross-country with Murray, he’ll be in for some fun and different experiences that will be sure to tickle your fancy!

Murray the Cat finds the family of his dreams and eagerly sets out to adopt them. But Charlie and Emma’s parents aren’t convinced it’s the right time for a pet. Just when things start to improve, someone from Murray’s past returns and complicates his plan. But Murray still won’t give up, because his new family needs him as much as he needs them!

With a delightful balance of sweetness, humor, and heart, this early chapter book follows the unique journey of an older feline who is determined to claim his chosen home. Tammy Brown’s vivid and nuanced watercolor illustrations beautifully capture the essence of Victoria Winifred’s charming story.

A portion of the proceeds earned for this book will be donated to Nathan Winograd’s Advocacy Center, which provides support and a step-by-step guide for animal shelters to vastly improve their placement rate.

Murray the Cat: First Adventures

Book Review

Murray the Cat by Victoria Winifred is a delightful read that follows the story of Murray, a charming feline. Charlie and Emma, two siblings, long for a pet, but their parents feel it is not the right time, as they are in the midst of moving, and adding a pet will only add to their stress. However, fate intervenes, and as they return home from school, they encounter a magnificent striped cat in their driveway. Charlie and Emma plead with their parents to keep the cat, but their request is declined. Murray, however, eventually wins over the parents and becomes a cherished member of the family. The heart of the story follows Murray’s owner’s attempts to reclaim him, while Murray resists and longs to stay with Charlie and Emma.

Murray the Cat is a heartwarming tale of two children who embrace Murray into their lives and hearts. The story captures the adorable moments when Emma mentions to her father that Murray takes away the stressful stuff. The book highlights how Murray blends seamlessly into their family, bringing joy to the children’s lives. Pets are a source of unconditional love and compassion, and this book highlights that beautifully.

The colorful illustrations add charm to the story, making it feel like a delightful cartoon. One interesting aspect of the book is how Murray had already chosen Charlie and Emma as his family before they decided to keep him. As the adage goes, pets adopt us before we adopt them. The author also emphasizes the importance of responsible pet ownership, as the family takes Murray to the vet to ensure his good health and verify that he does not belong to anyone else.

Murray the Cat is the perfect read for young audiences who enjoy stories featuring pets. This captivating book will teach them that it is acceptable to express their feelings and that pets are great therapy. This book is a beautiful reminder that pets can bring joy and love into our lives, and their unconditional love is truly priceless.

My Mother’s Life Story

Victoria Winifred Author Interview

From Peacock Lane: the Poetry and Prose of Emily Evans Volume 1 is a collection of evocative poetry and prose written by your late mother. Why was it important for you to share these works?

As her loving daughter, it means so much to me that my mother’s life story, personality, and perspectives will live again through these brilliant writings now accessible to the world. Publication of her work is the fulfillment of one of her dreams. I’m thrilled to announce that “From Peacock Lane” is already available for pre-order, and will be out in plenty of time for National Poetry Month in April.

What poem in this collection do you feel embodies who your mother was the most and why?

Emily told me that the last poem, “By the Door”, was written about me when I was going through a trying time. But I believe the piece better reflects her own fortitude because of the many serious difficulties she overcame throughout her life. In this poem, a small bloom of forsythia, serving as a metaphor, survives a cold, icy winter by holding onto its faith that spring will return. Here is an excerpt:

“A beleaguered blossom

brave as any lonely

soldier

on a ravaged moor”

What were some goals you set for yourself in publishing this book?

Before her passing in 2017, my mom gave me three large envelopes of her writing, “in case you can ever do anything with it.” I also have many of her journals, which I will evaluate for publication after the first three volumes of her work are completed. Currently, the working title of the entire series that will include all these texts is, “The Essence of Emily Evans.”

The publication of “From Peacock Lane” will be the first step in bringing that essence back to the world in a meaningful way. My next goals are to promote this first book of the series and then complete the rest. As you might guess, it’s been an emotional journey putting this project together. As I proofread and organized her poems, I heard her “voice” and experienced her with me again in a way that readers and writers can understand.

When will book 2 be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?

I’ve looked through the second envelope, and there are approximately 50 typed poems, numbered in the order she wished to have them shared (thanks, Mom!). These writings also cover the breadth of her life, but go further ahead. There is a disquieting pre-9/11 poem about the Twin Towers, and a fascinating account of her transatlantic vacation.  So, the next book, “From Deer Path Trail,” will also conjure up a gamut of emotions, with twists of humor guaranteed. The readers will continue to encounter both delightful and jarring metaphoric visions. After my own next book comes out this spring, I will start scanning the typed pages from the second envelope into text, handle the layout and proofreading, and will again engage the wonderfully talented Luisa Galstyan for the cover art and illustrations. Ideally, “From Deer Path Trail” will be available before the end of the year. Thank you so much for letting me share these details with you and your audience.

“From Peacock Lane” is the first published volume of poetry and prose by Emily Evans (1925-2017). Chronologically organized by the locations where she lived, this symphony of intensely descriptive pieces begins with nostalgic and dramatic moments from her years on a farm in Ohio in the 1930s. It then moves through her years in the Cazenovia Creek area of Buffalo, NY onto Brooklyn, Greenwich Village, Cocoa Beach, Florida, and back to New York again. The collection is filled with lyric poems of nature, and thrilling, delightful, and sometimes wrenching images of her personal experiences.

Discover Truths For Yourself

Victoria Winifred Author Interview

“The Princess, The Knight, and the Lost God” follows a twelve-year-old goddess from Chess Mountain who comes to Earth when her kingdom is in danger. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

In 2016, as a public-school teacher deeply invested in the idea of using chess as my class theme for all subjects, I was previewing a poem to possibly share with my students. It was entitled “Caïssa,” written by William Jones in 1764. The verses of that little-known work encompass the romance of the chess goddess with the god of war, Mars. I had never heard this mythological detail discussed before, not even in my chess circles, and it begged to be expounded.

When I looked for chess fiction books to see what was already out there, there were just about none. Yes, there have been famous scenes in some fictional books about chess, such as in Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland, but no children’s books existed at the time with chess as a total theme. So, I wondered, mightn’t Mars and Caïssa have married, and in present time have a daughter near the age of my students? I knew that I wanted Kassie to come to Earth and meet mortal children, but she never would have wanted or even have been allowed to leave Chess Mountain unless she absolutely had to do so. Soon thereafter, the outline of the story poured into my mind, but it took me years to complete.

Kassie faces difficult challenges in this novel that she must learn and grow from. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Especially these days, we are all being reminded that it is important to discover truths for yourself, and not accept second or third-hand points-of-view. This is true “across the board,” if you’ll forgive the pun. It was one of the reasons Kassie needed to visit our planet. She needed to learn what humans were truly like, and not rely on the hearsay of her studies in her secluded kingdom far away. It’s difficult to grow when you stay closeted in a protected comfort zone. Also, the students in the story came from different backgrounds, and faced personal challenges of their own. Kassie’s increasing support for them changed things, which showed the princess a new aspect of her own value.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

There are several strong themes in the story: Experiences can change your perspective. Friendships can take different forms. And by using the morals of chess, we can choose pathways to success, and even to redemption. Also, it was important to have concrete examples of how chess can deliver academics, and provide metaphors for many circumstances. There were nods to certain philosophical theories as well, if you look closely.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

As of late, I’ve been figuratively traveling around the globe with Kassie, and together we’ve found some poignant and dramatic scenarios that would certainly benefit from her presence! And I’m sure you can guess that the fallen Originals are not done making mischief for the loyalists.

But I have also time-traveled backwards, and have had glimpses of Mars’ and Caïssa’s first meetings, their courtship, and the scenario that followed. Intriguing scenes of Kassie’s childhood with Dimitri have also emerged. In addition, the relationships between the Originals before the rebellion were extremely different than they are today, as we were given hints of in my novel. Even I am being surprised by some of the details. So, with all that being said, let’s see what materializes in 2023!

Princess Kassie, the 12-yr-old daughter of the chess goddess Caïssa and her husband Mars, the god of war, eagerly awaits a day-long birthday celebration throughout the merry kingdom of Chess Mountain, where living chess pieces are born, grow up, and thrive in a bustling community, But the festivities are abruptly canceled when Kassie’s parents are blamed for the disappearance of another young god last seen on Chess Mountain. War is declared upon the realm, and Kassie must be rushed to safety.

With Maurice, a trusted knight disguised as her guardian uncle, Princess Kassie is whisked to dreaded Earth, and has a mission to complete. Living undercover as a mortal student in a NYC school, she takes comfort in a chess-loving classroom with a quirky teacher. As Kassie gets to know the human girls and boys, she is astonished to find that Earthlings are different from what she was taught, and more like herself than she ever imagined. She witnesses her classmates “puzzle” through their own difficult circumstances involving family and personal challenges, some like her own.

Due to kingdom enemies nearby, she cannot reveal who she is, or her chess strength. But when classmates are intimidated by a chess bully, Kassie battles to empower them for a tournament, while struggling to stay disguised for her own safety and that of Chess Mountain. Trouble ensues, and Kassie finds herself in a dangerous predicament.
Will Kassie make the right “moves” to solve the problem? Can she save herself, others, and the entire kingdom of Chess Mountain back home, or does she “blunder” away her chances under “time pressure”?

With its chess theme, dash of the holiday spirit, and a sprinkling of martial arts, this book will engage boys and girls straight through its dramatic conclusion, which will affect the future of children and chess forevermore.

Launching to critical acclaim in the chess world and beyond, this 220-page book is the first mythological chess fantasy ever written, and was created for the chess kids (of all ages) in your life, or those with a love for mythology and/or fantasy.
Throughout this book, not only do the principles of chess connect with the academics taught in the classroom, but they factor into the critical thinking used to solve life’s puzzles.

The Princess, the Knight, and the Lost God

Kassie is a princess of a whimsical world called Chess Mountain. On Chess Mountain, the residents are all chess pieces, and Kassie’s parents rule over them. Princess Kassie is a beloved member of the royal family, and it is her birthday. Kassie is excited to spend the evening with friends and family and celebrate her twelfth birthday. But not everything goes as planned, and Kassie is whisked away to Earth to complete her twelfth-year mission and to protect her from harm.

The Princess, The Knight, and the Lost God by Victoria Winifred is a unique novel about chess. While on Earth, Kassie must hide from evil Originals and make an impact in the lives of others. What better way to do that than to teach and improve her classmates’ chess game? Kassie must navigate Earth’s strange habits and traditions while watching her back for those who might harm her. She makes friends and helps them better their lives by teaching chess, and Kassie learns to stand up for herself against bullies while taking time to understand their challenges.

Winifred has created a unique world centered around chess, which shows her passion for the game. She weaved a story about lovers of chess and how it affects their lives. While the premise might seem a little silly at times, the story is exciting and entertaining all the way until the end. There are many twists and turns that await the reader throughout this story.

The Princess, The Knight, and the Lost God by Victoria Winifred is a captivating children’s chapter book. Young chess lovers will enjoy how Winifred weaves chess terms and strategies throughout the story while sticking to the fantasy genre. With memorable characters and an exciting plot older, elementary and middle school-age children will find this book a wonderful addition to their reading collection.
