True Meaning of Home

Vida Gecas Author Interview

Have a Good Trip, Lucky! follows a sweet little dog from Conakry, Guinea, who gets adopted by a U.S. diplomat and then has to travel across the world when his owner gets transferred to Washington, DC. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The Dog Diplomat Adventure series is actually inspired by my real-life rescue dog, Lucky! This book, Have a Good Trip, Lucky! – is the second book in the series.

Lucky found me when I was posted to the U.S. Embassy in Conakry, Guinea, in West Africa. After becoming part of both my family and the U.S. Embassy community family, Lucky was surrounded by love and friendship. However, as those in the foreign service and military service know, new assignments often lead to new destinations.  Lucky’s Diplomat Mom receives new work orders, and she is being transferred back to a job in the United States.  Lucky is about to embark on his overseas move or trip!

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

There are three themes in the book that I hope children and families take away after reading it.

INNER COURAGE – Lucky must find his inner courage in order to embark on his first overseas move and trip.  Life inevitably presents challenges, and both children and adults need to summon their inner strength when confronted with difficulties.

LOVE – This story depicts a temporary separation between Lucky and his Mom.  She arranges for Lucky to stay with her sister’s family until they can be reunited.  This mirrors real-life situations where parents might leave their children for school, camp, or other commitments.  Lucky learns that even in her absence, his Mom continues to care for him through trusted family members and friends.

TRUE MEANING OF HOME – Lucky discovers that HOME is not a building or place but is comprised of family and friends.  And as long as you have your loved ones with you, you are at HOME, no matter where in the world you may land.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

Actually, the ending of the book was the most enjoyable to write. When Lucky arrives in New York and meets my sisters and their families!  I had the opportunity to honor my family in this story.  Without their love and support, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish my job.

This book is a tribute to all family members who stand by their loved ones serving in the foreign service and military.

Will this book be the start of a series, or are you working on a different story?

Yes – this book is the second installment in the Dog Diplomat Adventure series!

The first book – Lucky Puppy Finds Two Families – narrates Lucky’s journey from being a homeless puppy on the streets of West Africa to finding not just one, but two loving families.  Inspired by my real-life rescue dog Lucky, this series chronicles his adventures.

In Have a Good Trip, Lucky!  –  the second book,  I share how Lucky became an integral part of both my family and the U.S. Embassy community, surrounded by love and friendship.  However, as is common in foreign and military service, new orders often lead to new destinations. Lucky’s Diplomat Mom receives orders to transfer back to the United States, leading to Lucky’s exciting overseas adventure!

Have a Good Trip, Lucky! – follows Lucky’s first big trip and explores courage, change, and the comfort of finding the true meaning of “home.”

Helping Children Be Better Humans

Joan Enockson Author Interview

Moonbeam’s Halloween Wish follows a lonely stray cat looking for a family who crosses paths with a girl dressed as a black cat, instantly forming a connection, and hoping that she has found her forever home. What was the inspiration for your story?

I wanted to write a Halloween story that wasn’t scary, and since I have an adopted cat, the idea of incorporating the concept of adoption was appealing to me.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

All of my books include lessons to help children be better humans, and in this book, I combined adoption and caring for those who are lonely as the primary concepts.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Taylor Johnston?

Taylor is an extremely talented artist and a close coworker. She is also a cat owner and works daily with kids, as I do, so her understanding of the concepts I wanted to portray was seamless. Taylor is also a highly creative individual and brought fresh ideas to her illustrations that I hadn’t thought of. We started with ideas that I had in mind, and after a few tweaks, the book was finished. We collaborated very well.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

I am currently working on a book about a Tulip. It is targeted for ages 6-8, and the theme will be attractive to towns that present tulip festivals.

Acknowledge Those Who Matter

Haelee P. Moone Author Interview

Everyday Heroes: Real People, True Heroes follows a teacher and her class who are learning about and celebrating the everyday heroes in their lives that inspire them. The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Arsalan Khan?

My dad and I began working with Arsalan in the summer of 2021. He’s become our preferred illustrator for all our projects since that time. We consistently choose him and recommend him to others because of his amazing ability to bring words to life through his illustrations. His patience while we refine our stories and request revisions is exceptional. Additionally, he has corrected errors in illustrations from other illustrators that we worked with prior to meeting him at minimal cost.

I collaborated with children at Casa Esperanza Montessori to create the manuscript for Everyday Heroes. My dad contacted Arsalan to see if he could illustrate the book while I continued to work on the manuscript. Arsalan agreed to fit it into his schedule. We provided him with the manuscript, specifying the characters’ makeup, and left the rest to his creative vision. He returned with a storyboard featuring all the characters, which we reviewed and approved after a few iterations. As always, Arsalan exceeded our expectations in both creativity and timeliness. We not only paid for his work but also gave him a generous tip for exceeding our expectations.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

I wanted to express that my dad has been my personal hero throughout my childhood and teenage years. Additionally, I wanted to emphasize that a hero doesn’t have to be a parent or someone who wears a cape. A hero is anyone who cares for you or holds significance in your life. My message to the children reading Everyday Heroes is to appreciate and acknowledge those who matter while they are still around. Also, take note of as many lessons as they try to teach you along the way while you can.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

I’m currently working on a poetry book that explores my journey from childhood to adulthood, reflecting on love, life, and personal struggles. I plan to release this book after graduating high school next summer, with the anticipated release date set for June 9, 2025.

Curious Chris- Why No Flamingos?

Curious Chris – Why No Flamingos? by Cindy B. Witty, illustrated by Sally Garland, stands out as a particularly charming and insightful children’s book. The story, centered around Chris, a boy with an insatiable curiosity, captures the essence of a child’s imaginative world. Chris’s constant stream of questions, ranging from the mundane to the fantastical, not only entertains but also reflects a deep and relatable aspect of childhood.

The narrative’s strength lies in its portrayal of how Chris’s parents navigate his endless inquiries. They ingeniously propose a pet as a way to channel his curiosity, leading to Chris’s whimsical desire for a flamingo, or “falingmo” in his endearing mispronunciation. This choice is an imaginative yet grounded approach to dealing with a child’s boundless imagination. As the story unfolds, with the realization that a flamingo is an impractical pet, it takes a gentle turn towards dealing with disappointment and finding joy in unexpected outcomes.

The introduction of Angel, the sandy-colored Labrador, marks a significant shift in Chris’s journey. The gradual shift from disappointment to affection is handled with a deft touch, teaching an important lesson about adaptability and openness to new experiences. What truly elevates this book are Sally Garland’s illustrations. They do more than just accompany the text; they breathe life into Chris’s world, making the story more immersive and engaging for young readers. The combination of Witty’s storytelling and Garland’s visuals creates a captivating experience.

Curious Chris – Why No Flamingos? is a rich, multifaceted tale that delves into themes of curiosity, adaptability, and the joys of unexpected companionship. It is an excellent choice for children, offering both entertainment and valuable life lessons in a delightful package.
